Valve has not published a complete local-media matrix covering codecs, containers, bitrates, or maximum movie resolution. In practice, the player you install determines much of the answer: current third-party projects advertise hardware paths for H.264, H.265/HEVC, AV1 or VP9, while Valve’s own streaming guidance focuses on diagnosing driver and acceleration problems. Treat 4K, 6K and 8K claims as player-specific capabilities, not as specifications of every Steam Frame playback app.
What Steam Frame officially provides for video
Valve’s 2026 Steam Frame specifications define the headset’s display, processor, memory, storage and connectivity. They describe the hardware available to a media player, not a certified list of every file the headset can decode.

| Component | Valve-listed specification | Playback implication |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 2160×2160 LCD per eye | Sets the panel’s per-eye rendering target; it does not limit a file to that encoded size. |
| Refresh rate | 72–144Hz; 144Hz is experimental | Controls display timing. A movie’s frame rate is a separate property. |
| Processor | 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 | Provides the CPU/GPU and media-engine resources used by the selected runtime. |
| Memory | 16GB unified LPDDR5X | Shared system memory; available headroom depends on the player and other running software. |
| Internal storage | 256GB or 1TB UFS | Holds locally downloaded media and applications. |
| Expansion | microSD slot | Allows additional local files after formatting through Steam Frame settings. |
| Data port | USB-C 2.0 | Used for charging and data; it is not a promise of a particular movie-transfer rate. |
| Charging | 15V ⎓ 3.0A, 45W maximum | A 45W USB-C supply is the stated upper charging envelope while using the headset. |
The official pages do not publish a universal decoder table for H.264, HEVC, AV1, VP9, MKV, MP4 or any other codec/container combination. A player may use Android or Linux media components, a vendor driver, its own parser, or a software fallback. Therefore, “Steam Frame supports codec X” is too broad unless it identifies the application and version making the claim.

What third-party players claim
A Steam store listing for LucidVR advertises hardware rendering for H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1. It also lists AVI, FLV, M4V, MKV, MOV, MPEG, MP4, MPG, MTS, VOB, WEBM and WMV containers. Those are the developer’s application claims. They are useful when selecting a player, but Valve has not certified that every listed combination works on every Steam Frame firmware release. The listing also warns that Linux compatibility layers such as Wine or Proton may fall back to software rendering.

The open-source just-video-frame project reports hardware decoding for H.264, H.265/HEVC and VP9 and describes support up to 8192×8192. That is implementation evidence from the project, not a Valve maximum-resolution guarantee. A different player can expose fewer codecs, use another decoder path, or fail on a particular profile, level, audio track or container even when the headset’s silicon is capable of decoding the video.
How to interpret a codec label
Codec names alone are insufficient. Check the player’s own documentation for the exact container, profile, level, bit depth, chroma format, frame rate and audio format it accepts. For example, an app that lists HEVC may still reject a file with an unsupported profile or an unusual audio stream. A file can also be perfectly valid while its container parser is missing from the app.
When a file does not open, test a second player before concluding that Steam Frame lacks the codec. Conversely, successful playback in one app should not be presented as a platform-wide guarantee.

Can Steam Frame play 4K, 6K and 8K video?
4K video
“4K” normally refers to a 3840×2160 file, while Steam Frame’s panel is 2160×2160 per eye. The headset can scale a 4K source to its display, but the panel specification does not prove that every 4K file, bitrate or codec will decode smoothly. Player support, decoder hardware, file profile and storage or network throughput all matter.
6K and 8K video
Higher-resolution files may work in a player that exposes an appropriate hardware path. The just-video-frame project’s stated ceiling of up to 8192×8192 is an example of such an implementation claim; it should not be read as a Steam Frame-wide 8K specification. At 6K or 8K, sustained bitrate, frame complexity, thermal conditions and the player’s rendering pipeline become increasingly important. Even if a file decodes, the headset may downscale it to the per-eye display target.
There is no Valve-published maximum local-video resolution or bitrate to use as a universal cutoff. If you need a reliable workflow, start with the exact player’s documented limits, test a short sample of the intended files, and lower resolution or bitrate when dropped frames appear.

Does Steam Frame use hardware decoding?
It can, when the chosen player and runtime expose the headset’s media hardware. Valve’s support article for streaming videos explains that video quality adapts to available download bandwidth and current video resolution. It also documents a failure mode in which the video hardware, drivers and Steam hardware acceleration interact badly, producing large pixels or macroblocks.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For streamed Steam video, Valve’s recommended diagnostic is to uncheck “Enable hardware video decoding, if supported”. This does not disable hardware decoding globally for every media application; it changes the relevant Steam streaming path. If artifacts disappear after the toggle is cleared, the fault is likely in the hardware/driver/acceleration path. Software decoding can raise CPU use and reduce performance headroom, so regard the change as a troubleshooting step rather than an automatic quality improvement.
Hardware-decoding troubleshooting sequence
- Reproduce the problem with the same stream or file and note whether you see macroblocks, large pixels, stutter or audio/video drift.
- For Steam’s streaming video, open the playback settings and clear Enable hardware video decoding, if supported.
- Play the same segment again. A clean result points toward the hardware-decoder, driver or Steam-acceleration combination.
- If the issue remains, reduce the stream or file’s resolution and bitrate, then test again. Valve states that streamed quality adjusts to download bandwidth and current video resolution.
- For local files, repeat the test in another player. Different runtimes can select different decoders and container parsers.
- Restore hardware decoding when it is stable; software decoding consumes more CPU and may create new stutter under load.
Resolution and refresh-rate settings
Steamworks exposes application-level preferences in vrpreferences.json. Developers can suggest preferResolution, which represents the width component of the per-eye resolution, and preferMinRefreshRate. If an application omits these values, the documented defaults are 1728×1728 and 72Hz. Valve’s example requests 2160×2160 and 90Hz and allows optional half-framerate throttling.

Users can override those suggestions in SteamVR’s per-application video settings. These controls affect how a VR application renders and how the display is timed. They do not change the encoded pixel dimensions of a movie and do not add a missing video decoder. A 3840×2160 file remains 3840×2160 in the media pipeline even when the application renders at 1728×1728 per eye; the player then scales or projects it.
Choosing a practical refresh rate
- 72Hz: the documented default and a sensible starting point for ordinary movie playback or when performance headroom is limited.
- 90Hz: the value used in Valve’s example when an application requests a higher minimum rate.
- 120Hz or 144Hz: useful only when the application and content pipeline can sustain the timing; 144Hz is explicitly experimental.
Do not raise refresh rate to solve codec errors. If playback stutters, first identify whether frames are being dropped during decoding, transfer or rendering. A lower refresh preference can reduce display workload, but it cannot repair an unsupported file.
Playing movies from internal storage or microSD
Steam Frame combines UFS internal storage with a microSD slot. Valve documents formatting a card through Settings > Storage. Format the card in the headset before copying a library if the system requests it, and keep a backup because formatting erases existing data.

Valve says UHS-II and UHS-III cards are expected to work, but their higher transfer speeds are not supported. The published guidance does not state a universal maximum card capacity, sustained video bitrate or codec-by-card matrix. Consequently, choose a card that meets your player’s file requirements, verify it in the current firmware, and test long files rather than relying on the UHS speed label alone.
Local-playback checklist
- Install a player whose own documentation names the codecs and containers used by your files.
- Copy a short sample first and confirm video, audio and subtitles before moving a large library.
- Keep free UFS or microSD space for temporary buffers and application updates.
- If playback pauses, compare the same file from internal storage and the card to separate decoder problems from storage throughput.
- Use the headset’s Settings > Storage workflow for card formatting instead of assuming a computer’s filesystem choice is optimal.
Streaming video from a PC
Steam Frame can stream from a host computer. In the Steam Frame library, select Stream from <host PC name> to choose a detected PC. Valve’s current support guide limits full SteamVR and Steam Frame streaming through the wireless adapter to Windows. That operating-system qualification applies to the cited streaming feature; it is not a statement that every local media player requires Windows.
PC streaming moves the decode and much of the rendering workload to the host, while the headset receives the resulting stream. Network conditions therefore join the codec and decoder variables. Valve notes that streamed quality changes with available download bandwidth and current video resolution. A strong host does not eliminate problems caused by wireless congestion, insufficient bandwidth or an unstable hardware-decoding path.

Choosing between local playback and PC streaming
| Decision factor | Standalone playback | PC streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Execution location | Player and decoder run on Steam Frame. | Host PC performs the stream’s source-side work; headset receives it. |
| Codec coverage | Depends on the installed player, runtime and drivers. | Depends on the host playback/streaming stack plus the headset receiver. |
| Storage | Uses UFS or a formatted microSD card. | Uses host storage for the source and network capacity for delivery. |
| Main failure modes | Unsupported profile/container, decoder limits, storage throughput or dropped frames. | Bandwidth, wireless conditions, host configuration, decoder artifacts or Windows-only feature availability. |
| Best use case | Offline viewing and a portable library. | Files that exceed a player’s local limits or libraries already managed on a PC. |
A reliable test plan for a new file
- Identify the file’s encoded dimensions, frame rate, codec, profile, audio format and container with a media-information utility on your computer.
- Check the chosen Steam Frame player’s published support for that exact combination; do not infer support from the headset’s processor name.
- Copy a short section to internal UFS storage and play it locally at the player’s default settings.
- If it works, repeat from the formatted microSD card to check storage behavior.
- If local playback fails, try another player that advertises the codec or container. Record whether the failure is an open error, missing audio, visual corruption or dropped frames.
- For a PC stream, test the same section from the host and watch for bandwidth-related quality changes.
- Only after decoding is stable, adjust SteamVR’s per-application render resolution or refresh preference. Keep 144Hz experimental mode for cases where the application and content pipeline demonstrably sustain it.
Common misconceptions to avoid
- “2160×2160 per eye means every 4K movie is guaranteed.” Display resolution and decoder support are different specifications.
- “A player listing is a Valve certification.” LucidVR and just-video-frame describe their own implementations; their claims do not establish a platform-wide matrix.
- “8K support in one project means all 8K files work.” The project’s up-to-8192×8192 statement still depends on codec, profile, bitrate, runtime and rendering load.
- “Turning off hardware decoding always improves playback.” Valve recommends the toggle as a diagnostic for artifacts; software decoding can increase CPU load.
- “A UHS-II or UHS-III label guarantees higher speed in Steam Frame.” Valve says those cards may work, but their higher transfer speeds are not supported.
- “Refresh-rate settings change the movie file.” SteamVR preferences affect application rendering and display timing, not encoded media dimensions.
