Steam Game Notes are already part of the public Steam client. Valve released the feature on June 14, 2023, adding per-game notes that you can open from the game’s details page or the in-game overlay, then pin over a running game. Notes support rich text, pasted images, offline use, and syncing across PCs and Steam Decks signed in to the same account.
What Steam Game Notes do
Notes are attached to individual games, so you can keep reminders, progress details, or reference material alongside the game they relate to. You can create multiple notes for one game, format text, and paste images into a note. Valve also says Notes work offline.
Valve introduced Notes in a beta announcement on May 12, 2023, then included them in the public Steam Client update announced June 14, 2023. The launch announcement described the public client update as released and automatically downloaded; the feature is no longer merely a planned addition. Valve’s June 14, 2023 Steam Client Update Released announcement is the release source. The earlier May 12, 2023 beta announcement documented the beta rollout and feedback period.
How to open Notes while playing
- Open the Steam overlay while a game is running.
- Open the Notes panel and choose or create a note for that game.
- To keep the note visible during play, pin the Notes panel in the overlay. Valve says the pinned panel’s opacity can be adjusted.
Valve presents the overlay as a way to consult notes while playing, alongside guides and other overlay panels. The June 14 announcement confirms overlay access, but it is not a current, step-by-step interface guide; exact control labels can vary with the Steam client interface.

Where else can you access Steam Notes?
Notes are also available from a game’s details page in the desktop client. Valve lists Steam Deck as an access point as well, so the feature is not limited to a handheld: a Deck is optional, and desktop Steam is supported.
Do notes sync to Steam Deck, and can they work offline?
Valve says notes sync to other PCs and Steam Decks logged into the same Steam account. It also described Notes as usable offline. The announcements establish those capabilities but do not specify detailed sync timing or conflict-resolution behavior, so they should not be taken as a guarantee about how simultaneous edits on multiple devices are reconciled.
