It can capture gameplay in the background or only when you start recording, then lets you review, trim, save, export, transfer, or share clips. Recording works across Steam games, but game-specific timeline markers are available only in games that support Steam Timeline.
What Steam Game Recording does—and when it arrived
Valve made Steam Game Recording available to all users on November 5, 2024, after introducing it in beta earlier that year. It is a built-in Steam Client feature, not a new 2026 rollout. Steam describes it as “The easy way to record, rewind, bookmark, clip, save & share your gameplay.” Valve’s availability announcement and Steam Support’s instructions and FAQ explain the feature.
Choose background or on-demand recording
Steam offers two capture modes. The right choice depends on whether you want footage available to rewind through or prefer to record only selected play sessions.
| Mode | How it captures | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Record in Background | Continuously records gameplay into a space-limited allocation. | Older footage can be overwritten as the allocation fills. Save important moments as clips before they disappear. |
| Record on Demand | Records only after you turn recording on. | You must start capture when you want footage; it does not maintain the same rolling record of earlier gameplay. |
Steam’s Game Recording settings include controls for storage allocation, save location, audio capture, and shortcut keys. Consult the Steam Game Recording support page for the current controls; Steam’s support information does not establish a universal recommended allocation or a performance benchmark.

What “all games” means
Steam says Game Recording works for all Steam games. That means recording availability is broad; it does not mean every game supplies event markers. Some games support Steam Timeline and can add game-specific markers to the recording timeline, while unsupported games can still be recorded without those extra markers.
Recording captures gameplay from games played through the Steam Client, not the desktop or other programs. Steam lets you choose whether to include audio from other programs, such as voice chat, but that does not turn the feature into a desktop recorder.

Start recording and make a clip
- Open Steam > Settings > Game Recording in the desktop client, or open the Game Recording tab in the in-game Overlay.
- Choose Record in Background or Record on Demand, then adjust the available storage, save-location, audio, and shortcut settings to suit your setup.
- While playing, use the timeline in the Overlay to review recording progress and any available events or markers.
- Choose the section you want to keep, place a clip suggestion, and adjust its start and end points.
- Save the trimmed clip. In the desktop client, find saved footage under View > Recordings & Screenshots; Steam Deck recordings appear in the Media tab.
Save, export, transfer, or share a clip
A saved clip in Steam, an exported video, a device transfer, and a share link are different ways to use footage. Choose based on where you want the clip and how long you need the link to remain available.
- Save in Steam: Keep the clip in Steam for later access.
- Export: Export the clip as an MP4 video file for editing or posting elsewhere.
- Transfer: Send it to an eligible device using Steam’s transfer option.
- Share: Create a link for others; Steam says share links expire after two days.
Because background capture can overwrite older footage, trim and save a moment you want to preserve rather than relying on the rolling recording to keep it indefinitely. Steam documents these options in its Game Recording guide and FAQ.
