Steam Game Recording is built into Steam and works on Steam Deck. It can continuously buffer gameplay in the background, record manually, mark moments on a timeline, turn selected footage into clips, export those clips as MP4 files, and share them through Steam.
It is now a stable Steam Deck feature rather than a beta-only experiment: Valve introduced it in beta in June 2024 and made it available to all users in the stable Steam Deck client on November 5, 2024. Valve has continued fixing Deck-specific recording problems, including a Game Recording crash related to certain maximum-video-height settings in SteamOS 3.8.10. What Steam Game Recording does
Game Recording is Steam’s integrated gameplay-capture system. Depending on the mode you choose, it can:
- Record gameplay continuously in the background.
- Record only when you activate it manually.
- Keep a timeline that you can rewind through.
- Let you add markers to important moments.
- Trim selected sections into permanent clips.
- Export selected clips as MP4 video files.
- Share clips through Steam or send them to another recently used Steam device.
On Steam Deck, saved recordings and clips appear in Steam menu > Media in Game Mode. Valve says the Deck provides the same core recording content and functions as the desktop Steam client. The desktop viewer is available through View > Recordings & Screenshots. Valve’s support documentation

How to enable Game Recording on Steam Deck
The clearest place to configure the feature is Steam’s desktop settings:
- Switch to Desktop Mode if necessary.
- Open Steam and select Steam > Settings.
- Choose Game Recording.
- Select Record in Background or Record on Demand (also described as manual recording in some Steam interfaces).
- Choose the recording location and set a storage allowance.
- Configure audio sources, quality, resolution, frame rate, and shortcuts as needed.
If you cannot find the setting in Game Mode, configure it in Desktop Mode and then return to Game Mode. While playing, the Steam Overlay also provides access to Game Recording controls.
Which recording mode should you use?
| Mode | Best for | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Off | Games where you do not want capture enabled | No recording buffer is maintained. |
| Record in Background | Unexpected moments | The oldest footage is overwritten when the configured storage allocation fills. |
| Record on Demand / Manually | Planned recordings | Recording begins only after you activate it. |
How to save a moment after it happens
For surprise clips, use the background mode:
- Enable Record in Background.
- Set a storage limit that suits your available space.
- Play normally.
- When something worth keeping happens, open the recording timeline from the Steam Overlay or Media viewer.
- Use Clip or Trim to choose the start and end points.
- Save the clip permanently.
- Choose Export Video File when you need a conventional video file.
The crucial step is creating and saving the clip. The background buffer is temporary: simply seeing a moment on the timeline does not protect it from being overwritten. Steam’s normal export workflow creates an MP4 from the selected clip; it does not necessarily turn the entire rolling buffer into one MP4 automatically. Valve’s support guide

Markers and Steam Deck shortcuts
Markers let you flag a moment without stopping to edit immediately. Valve documents Ctrl + F12 as the desktop shortcut for placing a timeline marker, and the shortcut can be customized. Steam support documentation
A third-party Steam Deck guide reports these default controller combinations:
Steam + Y: add a timeline markerSteam + Up: create a clipSteam + A: toggle manual recording
Treat those as reported defaults, not permanent Valve guarantees. Steam Input can remap actions, and Steam Client updates or controller layouts may change what is available. Check the current Game Recording shortcut settings if a combination does not work.

What it records—and what it does not
Steam Game Recording is primarily for games launched through Steam and using the Steam Overlay. Valve does not promise that every older game or unusual launch configuration will work correctly. Non-Steam games may work in some configurations, and third-party testing has reported successful cases, but compatibility should not be treated as universal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIt is also not a general-purpose screen recorder. It captures gameplay, not video of the Steam Deck desktop, browser windows, system settings, or unrelated applications. It can include game audio and may be configured to include audio from other programs, such as voice chat, but make a short test clip before relying on a particular microphone or audio mix.
Game Recording versus Steam Timeline
These are different features. Game Recording is the capture system. Steam Timeline is optional game integration that lets supported games add events or game-specific markers to the recording timeline. A game can be recordable without providing those extra timeline events.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Storage, performance, and battery considerations
Background recording uses the storage allocation you configure, and higher quality, resolution, frame rate, or longer buffers consume more space. Set a ceiling before you start and consider a suitable microSD card or external storage if your internal drive is limited. There is no universal “hours per gigabyte” figure: the result depends on the game and capture settings.
Valve says Game Recording is designed to reduce capture overhead by using hardware video encoding on supported NVIDIA and AMD graphics hardware. That is not a promise of zero performance impact on every Steam Deck game. Recording can still use storage, encoder and system resources, processing time during export, and additional battery power. If a game becomes unstable, reduce the maximum video height or other quality settings and test again.

| Tool | Best fit | Why Steam Deck owners may or may not choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Game Recording | Quick gameplay clips | Deck-native, integrated with Steam, and convenient for saving unexpected moments; it does not provide full production controls. |
| OBS Studio | Streaming and production | Better for webcams, scenes, desktop capture, advanced audio routing, and streaming, but more complex than Steam’s clip workflow. OBS Studio |
| NVIDIA App capture | Windows PCs with compatible NVIDIA hardware | Supports game, application, and desktop capture, but is not a direct Steam Deck replacement. NVIDIA App features |
| Xbox Game Bar | Simple Windows recording | Convenient on Windows and saves MP4 files, but it is not a Steam Deck Game Mode solution. Microsoft’s Game Bar guide |
| Decky Recorder and similar plugins | Alternative Deck workflows | May offer different controls, but Valve’s built-in feature is the lower-maintenance option for supported Steam games. |
Steam Game Recording is the better choice when you mainly play Steam games and want to save clips without installing or configuring another recorder. It is not a replacement for OBS if you need streaming, webcam layouts, multiple scenes, desktop tutorials, or detailed audio production.
Troubleshooting Steam Deck recording
- Confirm Game Recording is enabled and is not set to Off.
- Check that the game supports the Steam Overlay.
- Restart the game after changing recording settings.
- Verify that the recording location exists and has free space.
- Lower maximum video height, quality, or frame rate if the Deck becomes unstable.
- Check for shortcut conflicts with the game or another Steam Input action.
- Try a manual recording to determine whether the problem affects capture generally or only the background buffer.
- Update Steam and SteamOS. Valve has shipped Deck fixes for Game Recording, including a later stability fix involving maximum video height.
- Look in Steam > Media in Game Mode or View > Recordings & Screenshots on desktop Steam.
- If sharing fails, export the clip as an MP4 and transfer it manually.
Bottom line
Steam Game Recording is a genuine built-in Steam Deck feature and a practical replacement for separate capture plugins when all you need is gameplay clipping. Enable background recording, protect important moments by turning them into saved clips, and export those clips as MP4 files when you need footage outside Steam.
Its limits are just as important: it depends on Steam and the Overlay, does not record the Deck desktop, may use meaningful storage and system resources, and is not a streaming or full-screen production suite.
