If a Steam game freezes when you return from Alt+Tab on Linux, isolate fullscreen focus handling first: switch the game to borderless or windowed mode, then test it through gamescope. For Proton titles, capture a Proton log before changing renderers. If several games show the same behavior, check your graphics drivers and 32-bit OpenGL support rather than treating each game as a separate bug.
What an Alt+Tab freeze usually tells you
An Alt+Tab freeze is a focus-transition failure: the game was rendering, the desktop took focus, and the game did not recover correctly when it became active again. The visible symptom can be a completely stuck image, a black frame, or a window that no longer accepts input. If audio continues, that is useful evidence that the game process may still be running while presentation, focus, or the graphics path is stuck; it is not proof of a single cause.

The first distinction is whether the title is native Linux or running through Proton. The second is whether it is using exclusive fullscreen, borderless windowed mode, or an ordinary window. Record the desktop session (X11 or Wayland), GPU vendor and driver version, monitor count, refresh rates, and whether sound continues. Those details determine which comparison is meaningful and make a later bug report actionable.

Use the game’s video settings
- Launch the game and open its Video, Graphics, or Display settings.
- Change Exclusive Fullscreen to Borderless Windowed if that option exists.
- If borderless is unavailable, choose ordinary Windowed mode.
- Apply the setting, exit the game normally, relaunch it, and reproduce the same Alt+Tab sequence.
Borderless mode keeps the game in a desktop-managed window instead of repeatedly handing the display mode to the game. That makes it the safest first test because it changes only presentation and focus behavior. Windowed mode is a useful fallback, although it may leave decorations or expose scaling differences.

Test Steam launch options when the menu is unreliable
Steam launch options are configured from the game’s library entry: open Properties, select General, and enter an option in Launch Options. Valve’s launch-option documentation lists -fullscreen and -windowed (also written -sw by some games). Use the option your particular title documents; not every game implements every flag identically.
-windowedor the title’s documented borderless option: use this to test whether exclusive fullscreen is the trigger.-fullscreen: use only as a comparison if the game was already windowed or borderless.
Remove unrelated launch flags while testing. Multiple tweaks can conceal the variable that actually matters, and a flag accepted by one engine can be ignored or interpreted differently by another. After each change, fully quit and relaunch rather than relying on a suspended session.

This is a diagnostic comparison, not a promise that one mode is universally faster or more stable. Keep the resolution, refresh rate, and other graphics settings constant while comparing modes.

Use gamescope as an isolation step
Valve describes gamescope as “the micro-compositor formerly known as steamcompmgr.” Running a game inside it can separate the game’s presentation from the desktop compositor, helping you determine whether the freeze belongs to the game’s own fullscreen handling or to the direct desktop path.

Conservative borderless test
- Open the game’s Steam Properties and go to General → Launch Options.
- Enter
gamescope -b -- %command%. - Launch the game and perform the same Alt+Tab test used before.
- If the result changes, compare direct borderless mode with gamescope rather than adding several gamescope flags at once.
The -b switch requests a borderless gamescope window. Gamescope also documents -f for a fullscreen window and separate output dimensions with -w and -h. A resolution test therefore looks like gamescope -b -w 1920 -h 1080 -- %command%, but use dimensions appropriate to your display and change them only when resolution itself is part of the investigation.
When to try fullscreen gamescope
If borderless gamescope avoids the freeze but you need fullscreen presentation, compare it with gamescope -f -- %command%. Treat this as a separate experiment: fullscreen gamescope and borderless gamescope exercise different windowing paths, so a result in one mode does not establish the result in the other.
Compare desktop sessions, not just launch flags
Gamescope can run nested from another Wayland or X11 session. The gamescope documentation also shows Steam integration using gamescope -e -- steam -tenfoot -steamos. A practical test is to record whether the game freezes when launched directly under your current session, then compare that with a gamescope launch and, where available, an X11-versus-Wayland session. This comparison identifies a session/compositor interaction; it is not a guaranteed cure.
Add -d to enable additional gamescope debugging information when you need diagnostic output. Keep the debug run separate from your normal test so you know which change produced any new messages.

Proton-specific diagnosis
Capture a log before changing the renderer
For a Windows game running through Proton, open Properties → General → Launch Options and enter:
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%Valve’s Proton FAQ documents this option. Reproduce the freeze once, exit the game if possible, and preserve the generated per-game file named steam-<APPID>.log. The AppID is the numeric identifier in the game’s Steam URL or metadata. Do not mix several Proton versions during one test: select one Proton version, reproduce, save the log, and only then compare another version.
Use wined3d only as a renderer test
Proton normally uses DXVK to translate DirectX rendering to Vulkan. Proton also documents:

It is a diagnostic renderer switch, not a universal fix. If the Alt+Tab behavior changes, the result points toward a Vulkan/DXVK-versus-OpenGL rendering-path difference; it does not identify which driver or game component is ultimately responsible. Keep the log option and renderer option conceptually separate, and test one change at a time.

What to include with a Proton report
- Game name and AppID.
- Native Linux or Proton status, selected Proton version, and whether the issue occurs with another Proton version.
- Distribution and kernel, GPU model, and graphics-driver version.
- X11 or Wayland session, monitor count, refresh rates, and selected display mode.
- All launch options used for the reproduction.
- The relevant excerpt from
steam-<APPID>.log, with the full log retained for context.
When several games freeze: check the graphics foundation
A problem limited to one title can be an engine or game-specific focus bug. If multiple unrelated games freeze after Alt+Tab, prioritize the shared graphics stack. Valve’s Linux Steam support guidance specifically calls out installed graphics drivers and 32-bit OpenGL support. A missing or broken 32-bit component can affect Steam games even when a 64-bit desktop appears healthy.
Use your distribution’s current driver instructions
- Confirm that the GPU’s recommended driver is installed and actually active.
- Confirm that the distribution’s 32-bit OpenGL support packages are installed where required.
- Check Vulkan and OpenGL availability using the diagnostic tools and package names documented for your distribution.
- After changing drivers or graphics libraries, reboot before repeating the Alt+Tab comparison.
Do not copy package commands from an unrelated distribution. Package names, driver branches, and multilib setup differ, so use the current instructions for your Linux distribution alongside Valve’s support checks.
A reproducible troubleshooting sequence
- Describe the failure. Note whether the image freezes, turns black, or stops accepting input; record whether audio continues.
- Record the environment. Write down native-versus-Proton status, Proton version if applicable, distribution, kernel, GPU and driver, X11 or Wayland, monitor count, refresh rates, and current display mode.
- Remove noise. Temporarily remove unrelated Steam launch options and keep graphics settings unchanged.
- Run the display-mode test. Compare exclusive fullscreen with borderless, then ordinary windowed mode if needed.
- Repeat after a clean relaunch. Quit the game completely after each change and reproduce the same focus sequence.
- Try gamescope. Start with
gamescope -b -- %command%; test-f, resolution flags, or-donly as separate experiments. - Capture Proton evidence. For Proton titles, run
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%and savesteam-<APPID>.log. - Compare renderer paths if needed. Test
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%separately from the normal Proton configuration. - Escalate broad symptoms. If several games behave the same way, verify the graphics driver, Vulkan/OpenGL stack, and 32-bit OpenGL support.
- Report the smallest useful case. Provide the exact game, mode, session, launch option, reproduction steps, and relevant log excerpt rather than a list of simultaneous tweaks.
Reading the results
Only exclusive fullscreen freezes
If borderless and windowed modes survive Alt+Tab while exclusive fullscreen does not, keep the game in borderless mode or investigate gamescope as a presentation layer. The evidence points to the fullscreen transition path, not necessarily to a damaged installation.
Direct launch freezes but gamescope works
A gamescope-only improvement implicates the interaction between the game’s presentation and the desktop compositor. Compare X11 and Wayland where available, and preserve the working gamescope command as a clearly documented workaround.

Native and Proton games are both affected
When unrelated native and Proton titles show the same freeze, a shared graphics foundation or session/compositor interaction is more plausible than one game’s compatibility layer. Check drivers and 32-bit OpenGL support before spending time on per-game Proton flags.
Only one Proton game is affected
Capture its Proton log, test one Proton version at a time, and use the wined3d switch only to compare rendering paths. Keep the game’s display-mode result in the report because a fullscreen-only failure can coexist with a Proton-specific issue.
Nothing changes, including windowed mode
If the freeze occurs in windowed mode, fullscreen transitions are no longer the leading variable. Retest with a clean set of launch options, compare direct launch with gamescope, and collect the environment details and logs needed to investigate the title, Proton build, driver, or desktop session.

- Changing display mode, Proton version, renderer, gamescope flags, and drivers simultaneously.
- Assuming continued audio proves that the desktop compositor is at fault.
- Using a launch flag documented for another game engine without checking the title’s behavior.
- Comparing tests at different monitor refresh rates or resolutions and treating the result as a focus-only change.
- Reporting “Linux” without specifying X11 or Wayland, GPU, driver, and distribution.
- Deleting the Proton log or failing to record the exact launch option that produced it.
What a useful bug report contains
State the first mode that fails and the first mode that works. Include the game and AppID, native or Proton status, Proton version, distribution and kernel, GPU and driver, X11 or Wayland session, monitor arrangement and refresh rates, display mode, exact launch options, and whether sound continues. For Proton, attach the generated steam-<APPID>.log or an excerpt around the freeze. For gamescope, say whether you used -b, -f, -w, -h, or -d. This lets others reproduce a single controlled comparison instead of guessing from a long list of changes.
Bottom line
Make borderless or windowed mode your first test, because it isolates exclusive fullscreen with the least disruption. If that changes the result, compare direct launch with gamescope -b -- %command% and, when useful, an X11-versus-Wayland session. For Proton games, preserve a PROTON_LOG=1 %command% run before testing PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%. If several games freeze, stop treating the problem as title-specific and verify the graphics drivers, Vulkan/OpenGL stack, and 32-bit OpenGL support.
