That did not mean 39.2 million people were playing games: contemporaneous reporting put the number in-game at about 12.1 million. The milestone is a historical record, not a verified statement of Steam’s latest peak in 2026.
What Steam’s December 2024 record measured
The 39,205,447 figure was Steam’s peak concurrent-user count: the number of users online on the platform at the same time. SteamDB’s historical charts track this kind of activity, while Steam’s own statistics page publishes current and recent user figures. Reporting on the December 8 milestone cited SteamDB data; Valve did not issue a press release announcing the record.
At the reported peak, approximately 12,090,313 users were in games, according to PC Gamer’s account of the milestone. Subtracting that from the total leaves about 27.1 million users not classified as in-game at that moment. In other words, roughly 30.8% were reported in games and 69.2% were not. Those percentages are calculations from reported figures, so treat them as approximate.
Users counted as online but not in a game may be browsing the store, chatting, downloading, or simply keeping the Steam client open. The total is not a count of people playing one title, Steam’s daily or monthly active users, or everyone playing PC games across all storefronts.

Why the peak happened that weekend
The record coincided with two high-profile releases on December 6, 2024. Marvel Rivals, a free-to-play hero shooter, reportedly approached 500,000 concurrent Steam users during its launch period. Path of Exile 2 entered early access the same day and reportedly reached about 578,000 concurrent Steam users. These are launch-period snapshots reported by Insider Gaming, not permanent player counts.
The releases were likely contributors, not proven causes. Available reporting does not break down how many users each game added to Steam’s platform-wide peak. The record also fell on a Sunday in the holiday season, when more people may have had time to play, and came amid a year of rising Steam peaks.

Nor was the platform’s activity concentrated only in new releases. Contemporary coverage also highlighted Counter-Strike 2, PUBG: Battlegrounds, and Dota 2 among the games drawing large audiences. A platform-wide total reflects activity spread across thousands of games and Steam’s broader client, not just a handful of launch hits.
How to read Steam and game-player numbers
Steam’s total concurrent-user count and a game’s concurrent-player count answer different questions. The platform figure covers users online across Steam; a game-specific count measures users playing that title through Steam. SteamDB separates current players, a 24-hour peak, and an all-time peak in its charts. They are not interchangeable: a current count is a snapshot, a 24-hour peak is the highest point in a day, and an all-time peak is a historical maximum.

Game-specific Steam figures also exclude players on consoles, other PC launchers, cloud services, or any platform not represented in that Steam dataset. SteamDB’s historical and game-level charts are useful for comparisons, but snapshots and reported totals can differ with sampling time, rounding, or updates. Use the timestamp and source when comparing numbers.

The milestone demonstrates the scale of simultaneous activity on Steam and offers evidence of strong engagement with Valve’s platform. It can also show how seasonal patterns and major launches coincide with usage spikes. But one concurrent-user record cannot establish the size or health of the entire PC-gaming market.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
- It does not count everyone who played during the day; it is a simultaneous peak.
- It does not measure sales, revenue, account totals, daily or monthly active users, or long-term player retention.
- It excludes activity outside Steam, including console play and games launched through other PC storefronts.
- A launch-weekend peak does not show whether a game retained its audience after launch.
Steam’s official statistics page and SteamDB’s historical charts can help readers check current or past platform figures. The December 2024 total should be understood as Steam’s then-record peak on December 8, not as a claim about the latest record today.
