Steam Image Failed to Upload: Fix Artwork, Avatars, Screenshots, and Support Attachments

A Steam image upload can fail for different reasons depending on where you are posting it. Community artwork requires the game to be in your Library; profile avatars require the correct account, online mode, and a connected Friends & Chat session; screenshots and support attachments use separate capture and attachment paths. First identify the upload surface, then follow its specific checks instead of repeatedly retrying the same action.

Identify which Steam image upload failed

Steam has several image systems that look similar but enforce different requirements. “Steam image failed to upload” may refer to a Community Hub artwork post, a profile avatar, an in-game screenshot, or an image attached to a Steam Support request. The correct fix depends on that destination.

Upload surface Eligibility or account state Correct path Typical causes to check
Community artwork The associated game must be in your Steam Library Game Community Hub → Artwork → Upload Artwork Game is not in the Library, wrong hub, image is not your own, content is not game-related where required, or policy violation
Profile avatar Correct account, online mode, and Friends & Chat connected Profile editing in the Steam client or web profile Wrong account, Offline Mode, disconnected Friends & Chat, or a recent support removal temporarily blocking profile changes
Screenshot Use Steam’s screenshot workflow and capture the exact error if it fails Capture with your operating system, then use the relevant Steam upload or support attachment control Client or browser problem, service-side failure, policy restriction, or an image that behaves differently from others
Support attachment A current Steam account and a support request Steam Support form in the Steam client or an updated browser Outdated browser, attachment failure, account restriction, or an incomplete error report

Fix a Community Artwork upload

1. Open the related game’s Community Hub

  1. Sign in to the Steam account that owns or has the game associated with the artwork.
  2. Open that game’s Community Hub.
  3. Select the Artwork tab.
  4. Look for Upload Artwork at the top right.

Steam’s Community Artwork FAQ states: “To upload artwork, go to the related Community Hub’s Artwork tab and look for the "Upload Artwork" button at the top right.” If the button is missing, check eligibility before troubleshooting files: Steam says it will not appear unless the associated game is in your Library.

2. Confirm the game and account

  • Make sure you opened the hub for the exact game connected to the image.
  • Confirm that the game appears in the current account’s Library. A hub opened while signed into another account can look correct but still lack upload permission.
  • If you recently changed accounts, sign out and back in before checking the Artwork tab again.

3. Check the image and Community rules

Use artwork you created or otherwise have the right to post. Where Steam requires it, the image should be related to the game. Steam can block Community participation for inappropriate avatars, screenshots, or artwork. Remove material that violates the Community rules before retrying; repeated attempts will not bypass an account restriction.

4. Test the path, not just the file

Retry once in the Steam client and once in an updated browser. If the client fails but the browser works, the problem is likely local to the client session or its embedded web components. If both fail with the same account and image, treat eligibility, policy, or a Steam-side condition as more likely.

Fix a profile avatar that will not upload

For an avatar or profile picture, Steam’s own troubleshooting guidance focuses first on account and connection state rather than a universal image specification.

  1. Verify that you are logged in to the correct Steam account.
  2. Make sure Steam is not in Offline Mode.
  3. Open Friends & Chat and confirm that it is connected.
  4. Return to profile editing and try the upload again.

Steam summarizes this requirement as: “If you are trying to edit your profile within the Steam client, you’ll want to make sure you are logged in to the correct Steam account, make sure that you are not in offline mode, and that you are logged in to Friends & Chat.”

Consider a recent support removal

Steam also says that a recent removal by Support can temporarily prevent profile changes. If an avatar, artwork, or other profile content was recently removed, wait for the restriction period described in the account notice rather than creating repeated upload attempts. Check for a red account banner or other warning before trying again.

When the avatar itself is the problem

Community restrictions include inappropriate avatars. If another image uploads successfully while one particular image fails, review that image for graphic, abusive, or otherwise prohibited content. Do not infer a file-size rule from one failed attempt: Steam does not publish one universal size or format limit covering every image surface in the material available for this issue.

Handle a failed screenshot upload

A screenshot failure can occur during capture, while posting to a Community area, or when attaching evidence to Support. Separate those stages so you know which one is failing.

Capture the error clearly

  1. Use your operating system’s screenshot instructions to capture the Steam error window or the page showing the failed upload.
  2. Include the complete error text, not only a cropped icon or title.
  3. Note the time, the Steam surface used, and whether the screenshot was captured in the client or a browser.

Steam’s support guidance recommends capturing the error screenshot with the operating-system method, then attaching it through the Steam client or an updated browser when contacting Support.

Distinguish capture from upload

  • If the operating-system screenshot saves normally but Steam rejects the upload, the capture worked and the failure is in the Steam destination or account state.
  • If the image cannot be saved or opened before Steam sees it, resolve the operating-system or storage problem first.
  • If one image fails and another uploads from the same session, compare the two files and content rather than assuming a service outage.

Attach an image to Steam Support

Support attachments use a separate route from Community artwork. Steam’s support form accepts attachments through the Steam client or an updated browser.

  1. Open the relevant Steam Support request form.
  2. Describe what you were trying to upload and where it failed.
  3. Attach the error screenshot using the client or an updated browser.
  4. Include the exact error text, approximate time, image type, and whether a second image produced the same result.
  5. Submit the request and retain the case details for follow-up.

If the client attachment fails, switch to an updated browser once. If the browser fails while the client works, use the working route and mention the difference in your request. This comparison helps Support separate a local-client issue from an account or service problem.

Check for a Community restriction before repeated retries

Steam lists inappropriate avatars, screenshots, and artwork among reasons an account may be blocked from Community participation. Look for a red account banner, warning, or removal notice. A restriction can affect more than the single image that triggered it, so changing the file extension or retrying from another device is not a reliable workaround.

  • Remove or replace content that violates Steam Community rules.
  • Use your own work and keep artwork related to the associated game where that is required.
  • Read any account notice for a temporary duration or appeal instructions.
  • Do not create repeated submissions while a stated block is active.

Steam’s Community-block FAQ describes the issue this way: “The block may be related but is not limited to: The use of graphic or otherwise inappropriate avatars, screenshots, artwork etc.”

Understand limits and temporary service conditions

The reported 2.15 GB guide limit

A Steam Community user reported a “file upload failed: 25” error after reaching approximately 2.15 GB of guide content. That number is anecdotal, accessed in 2026, and is not an official Steam specification. It applies to the reported guide-content situation, not automatically to avatars, screenshots, or Community artwork. Do not treat 2.15 GB as a universal image limit.

Transient failures

Community users also report generic upload failures that later clear, but those reports are not an official diagnosis. If account state, eligibility, policy, and client/browser checks all pass, wait briefly and retry once. Record whether the same failure affects a different image or a second upload surface; that pattern is more useful than endless retries.

A practical diagnosis sequence

  1. Name the surface: artwork, avatar, screenshot, or Support attachment.
  2. Confirm the account: sign in to the intended account and verify the game is in the Library when uploading artwork.
  3. Restore online state: leave Offline Mode and reconnect Friends & Chat for profile changes.
  4. Review content: use your own, game-related artwork where required and remove material that could violate Community rules.
  5. Test both routes: try the Steam client once and an updated browser once.
  6. Compare images: try a second image to see whether the failure follows the file or the account/session.
  7. Check notices: read red account banners and recent Support-removal messages.
  8. Document the result: save the exact error, time, surface, file type and size, and which route succeeded or failed.
  9. Contact Support: attach the error screenshot and the recorded details if the problem persists.

  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
  • The upload surface and the exact game or profile page involved.
  • The account state: online or offline, and whether Friends & Chat was connected.
  • The complete error wording, including any number such as “25.”
  • The time and date of each attempt.
  • The image file type and size, stated as observations rather than as proof of a Steam-wide limit.
  • Whether another image behaved differently.
  • Whether the Steam client, an updated browser, or both failed.
  • Any red account banner, content removal, or Community restriction.

Common mistakes that waste time

  • Using the wrong hub: artwork uploads belong to the associated game’s Community Hub, not a generic profile page.
  • Ignoring Library eligibility: Steam does not show Upload Artwork unless the game is in the account’s Library.
  • Staying offline: profile edits can fail when Steam is in Offline Mode or Friends & Chat is disconnected.
  • Assuming one size limit: no single published limit covers every Steam image surface in the available guidance.
  • Retrying restricted content: a policy block requires changing the content or resolving the account restriction, not more attempts.
  • Sending Support a vague report: “it failed” omits the surface, error text, route, and timing Support needs to investigate.

When to stop troubleshooting locally

Move to Steam Support after you have confirmed the correct account and destination, restored online status, checked the Community rules, tested the client and an updated browser, and captured the exact error. A consistent failure across both routes, multiple images, and the same account is less likely to be a simple local-session problem. Send the screenshot and your recorded conditions so Support can check account restrictions or a service-side issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Steam publish one universal image size or format limit?

No. The available Steam guidance does not establish one limit that applies to artwork, avatars, screenshots, and Support attachments alike. Treat any limit reported by a Community user as specific to that situation unless Steam confirms it.

Why is Upload Artwork missing from a game’s Community Hub?

Steam says the button will not appear unless the associated game is in your Library. Confirm the account and open the Artwork tab for the correct game’s hub.
