The best Steam Link alternative depends on where you want the game to run. Moonlight paired with Sunshine streams games from your own computer and works with games from multiple stores. GeForce NOW runs supported games on NVIDIA’s cloud computers, so you do not need your gaming PC turned on. Steam Link remains the simplest baseline when your library and saves are already managed through Steam.
This guide explains the differences, requirements, setup steps, controller choices, network limits and troubleshooting paths so you can choose without confusing home-PC streaming with cloud gaming.

Quick comparison: which Android option fits your situation?
All three options send a video stream to an Android phone or tablet and return your controller input to the game. The important difference is where the game is rendered and what must be available before you press Play.
| Option | Where the game runs | Best fit | Main trade-off | Store or catalog scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Link | Your home PC running Steam | A Steam-focused setup that prioritizes the shortest setup path | The PC must be on, Steam must be running and your session must be available | Steam-managed games and applications |
| Moonlight plus Sunshine | Your own PC, with Sunshine handling the host stream | People who want games from different stores, desktop streaming or more host control | You must install and configure a host, then maintain a reliable network path | Games and programs that you add to the host, regardless of store |
| GeForce NOW | NVIDIA cloud servers | Players without a suitable gaming PC at hand, provided their games are supported | Experience depends on service availability, supported titles, internet latency and membership tier | Only games currently supported by the service; ownership in another store does not guarantee access |
Moonlight and Steam Link are remote displays for a computer you control. GeForce NOW is a cloud service; it is not a way to wake or remotely operate your personal desktop. Current catalog coverage, country availability and membership pricing can change, so check those details in the service’s Android app or official account pages before committing.

Moonlight and Sunshine: the flexible self-hosted alternative
What the pair does
Moonlight is the Android client. Sunshine is a host application that captures and encodes the game on your PC. Moonlight can stream individual games, ordinary desktop programs or the full desktop, locally or over the internet. Its Android distribution is open source and free, and it can stream games purchased from different stores rather than restricting you to one launcher.
Sunshine is the practical host choice for a new installation because it supports PCs with any GPU vendor. Moonlight also lists NVIDIA GeForce Experience as a possible host, but Sunshine is the route to use when you want a broadly compatible, actively configurable host. Moonlight supports H.264 and HEVC streams; AV1 is available when Sunshine and the host GPU both support it. Android gamepad input is supported.
What you need before installing
- A Windows, Linux or other Sunshine-compatible gaming PC with the games installed and able to run them locally.
- An Android phone or tablet with enough performance to decode the selected stream. The project warns that results vary with the client device and network.
- A strong home network. Moonlight recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Android device, while its setup guidance strongly recommends a mid- to high-end router using Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax). Connecting the gaming PC to the router by Ethernet removes one wireless hop.
- A controller that the Android device and game both recognize, unless the title is comfortable with touch or keyboard-and-mouse input.
Those are recommendations, not a promise of a particular frame rate or latency. A fast phone cannot compensate for a congested access point, and a powerful PC cannot eliminate delay introduced by a weak wireless link.

- Install Sunshine on the gaming PC. Launch it and complete its first-time configuration in Sunshine’s web interface. Create the host credentials requested by the setup rather than leaving a default account in place.
- Install Moonlight on Android. Keep the phone or tablet connected to the same home network as the PC for this first pairing. Local pairing makes it easier to separate host problems from internet-routing problems.
- Pair with the PIN. Select the discovered PC in Moonlight. The Android client displays a PIN; enter that PIN in Sunshine’s pairing prompt on the PC and approve the connection.
- Test a built-in entry. Sunshine includes Steam and Remote Desktop entries. Start one, confirm that video appears and test several minutes of controller input before adding complexity.
- Add other games or programs. Use Sunshine’s application controls to add a launcher, a specific game executable or another desktop application manually. In Moonlight, that entry then appears alongside the defaults.
- Only after local streaming works, consider internet access. Follow Sunshine and Moonlight’s current remote-streaming guidance for your network. Remote access adds routing, firewall and security variables; do not expose a host until the local configuration is stable and protected by a strong account password.
Image quality, HDR and codec choices
Moonlight can negotiate H.264, HEVC or AV1 according to what the host and Android client support. AV1 requires Sunshine and a compatible host GPU, so selecting it on an unsupported combination will not improve the stream. Start with a codec your devices clearly support, then experiment if you need a lower bitrate at similar image quality.

- CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.
HDR has specific prerequisites. Moonlight states that HDR requires an HDR10-capable Android client, a GPU capable of HEVC Main 10 encoding and a game with HDR10 enabled. Games that use operating-system-level HDR may additionally require an HDR display connected to the host PC. If a game appears washed out, refuses HDR or falls back to SDR, check all of those conditions instead of assuming the phone is defective.
Common Moonlight problems and fixes
- The PC is not discovered: confirm that both devices are on the same local network, Sunshine is running and the host firewall permits it. Reconnect the phone to the intended 5 GHz network if the router uses separate bands.
- Pairing does not complete: start a fresh pairing attempt, enter the newly displayed PIN in Sunshine’s web interface and verify that you are approving the request on the correct PC.
- Video stutters while audio continues: inspect both links, not just the phone’s signal. A wired PC connection and a less congested 5 GHz channel can help; lowering the stream resolution or bitrate is a diagnostic step.
- Controls work in menus but not in the game: check the title’s controller mode and whether the Android device granted input access. Test with Sunshine’s Steam or desktop entry to determine whether the issue is game-specific.
- Remote streaming fails although local streaming works: treat it as an internet-routing or firewall problem. Return to the local connection, confirm the host is stable, then follow the current remote-access instructions rather than changing several variables at once.
GeForce NOW: cloud gaming without your own PC
How it differs from home streaming
GeForce NOW runs supported PC games on NVIDIA’s cloud infrastructure and sends the result to the Android app. Your home computer does not need to render the game or remain powered on. That convenience comes with a different limitation: a game in your Steam or another store library is usable only if GeForce NOW currently supports that title and account link.
Do not treat NVIDIA’s Android requirements as a catalog list. They describe the hardware, operating system and network needed to connect; they do not establish that every PC game is available in the service.

| Target stream | NVIDIA’s recommended connection | Additional condition |
|---|---|---|
| HD up to 60 frames per second | 15 Mbps | Use Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi when possible |
| Full HD at 60 frames per second | 25 Mbps | Use Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi when possible |
| QHD at 120 frames per second | 35 Mbps | Requires GeForce NOW Ultimate membership on Android |
NVIDIA also says latency to an NVIDIA data center should be below 80 milliseconds. These are NVIDIA’s requirements and recommendations, not an independent performance guarantee. Actual results depend on the selected data center, congestion, Wi-Fi conditions and the Android device’s decoder.
Setup sequence
- Check the service first. Search for each game you intend to play in the current GeForce NOW catalog and verify that the relevant store account can be linked. Availability may vary by country and can change.
- Install the Android app and sign in. Use the account and membership tier that match the stream quality you want. Review current terms and pricing at sign-up; a fixed price is not established here because plans change.
- Connect a controller. NVIDIA lists Microsoft Xbox controllers and Sony PS5 DualSense or DualShock 4 controllers for phone play. Pair the controller with Android before launching the game and confirm that the title recognizes it.
- Launch a supported title. If the service queues or reports that a game is unavailable, check catalog status and account linking before changing phone settings.
- Measure your network at the location where you play. A connection that meets a headline Mbps number can still feel poor if latency is high or packets are lost. Move to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet where practical.
Controls and the on-screen gamepad
The Android app includes an on-screen virtual gamepad, but NVIDIA does not recommend it for long-term play. It can be useful for a short test or a menu, yet physical controls generally leave more of the display visible and avoid covering action buttons. A phone clip that attaches the handset to a controller is specifically recommended by NVIDIA for handheld play.
Steam Link as the baseline you may not need to replace
Steam Link is a free Android app built around Steam’s streaming technology. If every game you care about is already in Steam and your computer is available, it may involve fewer decisions than installing a separate host.
- Turn on the home PC and launch Steam.
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns the games.
- Open Steam Link on Android and follow its pairing prompts.
- Select a game or Steam application and test controller input before moving away from the home network.
Steam Link is not a cloud substitute: the PC must remain powered on with Steam running. Moonlight is usually the more flexible choice when you want non-Steam launchers, desktop access or a host that is not tied to one storefront.

Network planning: local PC streams versus cloud streams
Understand the two links in a home setup
With Steam Link or Moonlight, the stream travels from the game PC to the router and then from the router to Android. A PC connected over Wi-Fi can suffer from interference before the phone even receives a frame. That is why Moonlight recommends Ethernet for the host and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the client. Place the phone where the access point has a clear signal, and avoid testing during a large download or backup.
Cloud streaming adds an internet path
GeForce NOW adds the route from your home to an NVIDIA data center. Your measured download speed is only one part of the result; distance, routing and latency matter. NVIDIA’s under-80-ms data-center target is a useful threshold for evaluating the connection, but it is not a promise that every game will feel identical.
A practical diagnostic order
- Test the same game locally on the PC to rule out a game or driver problem.
- For Moonlight or Steam Link, test on the home network before changing remote-access settings.
- Move Android to 5 GHz and, if possible, connect the PC by Ethernet.
- Reduce resolution or frame-rate targets temporarily. If stability returns, the network or decoder is near its limit.
- For GeForce NOW, compare play at another time or location. Persistent delay despite adequate bandwidth points toward route or data-center latency rather than the phone.
Controllers, phone clips and other accessories
A Bluetooth Android gamepad is optional, not a mandatory purchase. Both Moonlight and GeForce NOW support Android controller input, but compatibility still depends on the specific controller, phone and game. Check the game’s input settings before buying an accessory.
A phone controller clip is most relevant to GeForce NOW because NVIDIA recommends one for attaching the handset to a supported controller. For Moonlight, a clip can improve comfort but does not change stream quality. A 5 GHz router or Ethernet cable is similarly conditional: upgrade only if your existing wireless link is the bottleneck. No particular router or controller model is established as a universally best choice.

Which option should you choose?
You own a gaming PC and use several stores
Choose Moonlight with Sunshine. Install the host, pair locally and add each launcher or game you need. You retain access to your own hardware and can stream the desktop as well as games.
You own a gaming PC and want the simplest Steam-only route
Start with Steam Link. It is the shortest path when Steam already manages the games and you do not need desktop or non-Steam entries. Move to Moonlight if you later need broader application support or more host control.
You do not have a suitable gaming PC available
Evaluate GeForce NOW. Confirm that your desired games are currently supported in your country, check the membership terms, verify that your Android device meets the minimum requirements and test the connection where you will play.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou mainly play on a phone
Plan around a physical controller and stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Touch controls can prove that a service works, but both comfort and available screen area improve with a compatible gamepad; NVIDIA specifically advises against relying on its virtual gamepad for long sessions.
What can change after you set it up?
Self-hosted streaming is comparatively stable because the PC, router and games are yours, although Android updates, GPU drivers and Sunshine releases can alter behavior. Cloud gaming is more volatile: supported titles, membership features, data-center availability and regional access can change. Recheck those items whenever a game disappears, a new tier is introduced or you move to another country.
The decision is therefore straightforward: use Moonlight and Sunshine for control and broad PC access, Steam Link for a simple Steam-centered home stream, and GeForce NOW when cloud hardware is more useful than owning or leaving a gaming PC available.
