Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSteam Link is usually the better first choice for a Steam-only library because Valve’s Android setup is short: run Steam on the PC, put the phone on the same network, and pair the app. Moonlight paired with Sunshine is the better fit when you need the Windows desktop, non-Steam games, or a host that can use modern AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel graphics. Neither has an evidence-based universal latency win: the official documentation describes features and recommended configurations, not a controlled Android head-to-head test.
Steam Link and Moonlight solve the same basic problem
Both applications stream a game that is running on your computer to an Android phone or tablet. The computer renders the game, encodes the video and audio, and sends that stream over the network. Android displays it and sends controller, touch, or keyboard input back to the computer. Your phone is therefore a streaming client, not a standalone PC gaming device; the host PC still needs the game installed and must remain available while you play.

Steam Link is Valve’s client for Steam Remote Play. Moonlight is an open-source client that connects to a host service; its current project guidance recommends Sunshine. Sunshine exposes Steam, the desktop, and manually added games or applications to Moonlight. That difference in host model explains most of the practical choice.

How Steam Link works
Steam Link is integrated with Steam Remote Play. The host computer runs Steam and the game is launched through that Steam session. Valve’s Android instructions specify Android 5.0 or newer, a phone connected to the same network as the host for initial pairing, and a 5 GHz wireless router recommendation. The app discovers the computer, displays a pairing code, and then offers the Steam interface on the phone.

This integration is its main advantage. Steam’s library, controller mappings, and Big Picture-style interface are already part of the flow, so there is no separate host service to install or application list to maintain. It is also a constraint: software that is not available through Steam may need to be added to Steam first, and that workaround is less direct than launching an arbitrary application through Sunshine.
How Moonlight with Sunshine works
Moonlight is the Android client; Sunshine is the host software on the gaming PC. The Moonlight project recommends Sunshine because it is open source, supports more platforms and GPUs than the older GeForce Experience host route, and continues to receive fixes and features. The setup guide lists Sunshine hosts on Windows 10 or 11, experimental macOS 12 and newer, and specified modern Linux distributions. It lists modern AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel GPUs, but software support changes, so check the current guide for a particular operating-system and graphics-card combination.
Sunshine has a web-based configuration interface. After installation, you create credentials, start the service, and use Moonlight on the same network to find the host and pair with a PIN. Sunshine supplies Steam and Remote Desktop entries by default. You can add individual games, launchers, emulators, or other applications, which makes Moonlight a general-purpose remote-display client rather than only a Steam-library front end.

Set up Steam Link on Android
- Prepare the host. Install and sign in to Steam on the gaming computer. Leave Steam running while you pair and play.
- Prepare the network. Connect the phone and host PC to the same home network. A 5 GHz router is Valve’s recommendation; connect the PC by Ethernet if practical.
- Install and open Steam Link. Use an Android device running version 5.0 or newer, then launch the app and allow it to scan for computers running Steam.
- Pair the computer. Select the discovered PC. Steam Link displays a PIN; enter that code in the Steam prompt on the host.
- Run the network test. Let the app identify obvious connection problems before starting a game. If the test is poor, fix the network rather than assuming a different client will remove the bottleneck.
- Connect a controller or use touch controls. Valve lists the Steam Controller, Xbox One S controller, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 and newer, Razer Kishi, and Raiju Mobile among supported examples. Other input devices may work but are not officially supported by Valve.
- Start the stream. Choose a game in the Steam Link interface. The game continues to run on the PC while its picture and sound appear on Android.
For general Steam Remote Play, Valve recommends at least a quad-core CPU in the gaming PC and a client GPU with hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding. These are vendor recommendations, not a measured minimum that guarantees a particular resolution or frame rate in every game.
Set up Moonlight with Sunshine
- Check the host combination. Confirm that the PC’s operating system and AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel GPU are supported by the current Sunshine guide. Experimental operating-system support can change.
- Install Sunshine on the PC. Start the Sunshine service and open its configuration interface locally. Create credentials when prompted; do not leave the interface protected only by a default or easily guessed password.
- Review the application list. Sunshine normally supplies Steam and Remote Desktop entries. Add a game, launcher, emulator, or other program through the application settings when it is not listed.
- Install Moonlight on Android. The client baseline is Android 4.1 or newer, but newer, faster phones are more likely to decode high-resolution streams without stutter or freezing.
- Put both devices on the same network. Moonlight should discover the Sunshine host. Select it to display a pairing PIN.
- Authorize the client. Enter the PIN in Sunshine’s pairing interface. Only approve a device you recognize.
- Launch an application. Select Steam, Desktop, or the custom entry in Moonlight and verify video, audio, and input before tuning quality.
Sunshine’s desktop entry is useful for software that does not behave like a conventional game. It also means that a compromised or poorly secured host configuration can expose more than a single game, which is why account credentials, firewall rules, and the configuration interface deserve attention.
Which client handles non-Steam games and the desktop better?
Moonlight’s broader application model
Moonlight with Sunshine is the straightforward choice for a game bought outside Steam, an emulator, a launcher, or a productivity application. Sunshine includes Remote Desktop and lets you define additional applications, so the Android client can present a menu of programs rather than only the Steam catalog.
Steam Link’s Steam-first model
Steam Link is most direct when every game you intend to play is already in Steam. Its advantage is not a larger application menu; it is that Steam handles the library view, launch process, and many controller mappings in one place. Adding a non-Steam shortcut to Steam can make some software accessible, but it adds a layer that Sunshine does not require.

Network quality matters more than the app name
Video streaming turns every frame into network traffic and every button press into a return trip. Interference, weak signal strength, router congestion, and a wireless host connection can produce blur, dropped frames, or delayed controls regardless of which client you choose.
- Prefer Ethernet for the host PC. Both sets of guidance favor a wired connection from the gaming computer to the router.
- Use a 5 GHz client connection. Valve recommends a 5 GHz router; Moonlight specifically recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 with a good signal.
- Reduce distance and obstructions. A phone at the edge of coverage can perform worse than a less powerful phone near the access point.
- Use hardware decoding. Valve calls for hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding on the client. Moonlight’s minimum Android version alone says nothing about whether a particular handset can decode a high-bitrate stream smoothly.
- Change one variable at a time. Lower the stream resolution or bitrate, test again, and then adjust frame rate or codec settings. This identifies whether the limitation is network capacity or device decoding.
Valve’s troubleshooting advice includes lowering game resolution and disabling V-sync when appropriate. Those changes can reduce the amount of work and data involved, but they are troubleshooting options rather than universal best settings.
Is one lower latency?
The supplied official documentation does not establish that Steam Link or Moonlight has lower input latency on Android. A fair test would hold the PC, Android device, router, game, resolution, codec, frame rate, controller connection, and network load constant. Without that control, an anecdotal preference can reflect the phone, Wi-Fi conditions, or game settings rather than the application.

HDR on Android: a compatibility checklist, not a promise
Moonlight’s guide describes HDR10 streaming as beta and lists all of the following for an Android client:
- Android 7.0 or later.
- HEVC Main10 hardware decoding on the device.
- An HDR10-capable Android display.
The Sunshine host side also needs a Windows PC and a GPU able to encode HEVC Main 10. The guide calls for an HDR display or an EDID emulator connected to the host. Even when those conditions are met, it warns about possible color artifacts, scaling artifacts, and cases in which the stream does not start until input is received.
Do not infer that an Android phone marked “HDR” automatically satisfies the decoder requirement, or that a device meeting the checklist will behave identically across games. Steam Link’s reviewed Android documentation does not provide an equivalent HDR requirements list, so HDR alone is a reason to investigate Moonlight’s exact compatibility rather than a reason to declare it universally superior.

Valve’s supported Steam Link examples include the Steam Controller, Xbox One S controller, DualShock 4 when the phone runs Android 9.0 or newer, Razer Kishi, and Raiju Mobile. Valve notes that other input devices may work without officially supporting them.
Moonlight supports Android-mapped gamepads and identifies some Xbox and PlayStation controllers. Test a specific controller with the specific phone: the Moonlight documentation notes that latency and disconnection problems can occur, especially with some PlayStation controllers over Bluetooth. A USB-C or phone-mounted Android game controller can avoid some wireless variables, but fit, connector type, phone dimensions, and compatibility still need to be checked before purchase.
Can either one stream outside your home?
Steam Link away from home
Valve’s material establishes Remote Play across devices, but the reviewed Android support excerpts do not provide enough networking detail to describe a precise off-home Steam Link procedure or guarantee that it will work from every internet connection. Public and corporate networks can restrict game-streaming traffic.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Moonlight away from home
Moonlight documents internet streaming through Sunshine’s UPnP option or other network-configuration methods. Its FAQ notes that a public IP address is not always available and identifies ZeroTier as a more complicated alternative. If you stream through the internet, set the bitrate at least 1 Mbps below the home upload speed so other traffic has headroom. A hotel, school, office, or carrier network may still block the required connections.
Remote access also expands the security consequences of an exposed host. Use strong Sunshine credentials, limit who can pair, and avoid publishing the configuration interface directly unless you understand the firewall and authentication implications.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The PC is not discovered
- For Steam Link, verify that Steam is open on the host and that phone and PC are on the same network.
- For Moonlight, verify that Sunshine is running, the host and phone share the network, and the host firewall allows the service.
- Do not test discovery from a guest Wi-Fi network that isolates clients from one another.
Video stutters or freezes
- Move the phone closer to the 5 GHz access point and remove competing traffic.
- Connect the host PC to the router by Ethernet.
- Confirm that the Android device is using hardware video decoding.
- Lower resolution or bitrate; on Steam Remote Play, Valve also suggests trying a lower game resolution and disabling V-sync.
- If the phone is an older Android model, treat its listed minimum version as a compatibility floor, not a performance guarantee.
The picture is clear but controls feel delayed
- Test the controller locally on the phone to separate Bluetooth or USB delay from stream delay.
- Reduce network congestion and use a wired host connection.
- Compare the same game and settings after lowering stream quality.
- Do not treat an unmeasured client preference as proof that one protocol is faster.
HDR does not start or looks wrong
- Check Android 7.0+, HEVC Main10 hardware decoding, and an HDR10 display for Moonlight.
- Check the Sunshine host’s Windows requirement, HEVC Main 10 encoding capability, and connected HDR display or EDID emulator.
- Expect beta-feature issues such as color or scaling artifacts and a stream that starts only after input.
A Moonlight application opens and closes immediately
- Launch the same program locally on the host to confirm that its path and permissions are valid.
- Review the Sunshine application entry and its working directory or launch arguments.
- Try the built-in Steam or Desktop entry to determine whether the issue is the custom application definition.
Choose using your actual setup
Choose Steam Link first when
- Your games are already in Steam.
- You want the shortest documented Android setup.
- You prefer Steam’s library and controller interface over maintaining a separate host catalog.
- You are willing to use a good 5 GHz connection and, ideally, Ethernet to the PC.
Choose Moonlight with Sunshine first when
- You need non-Steam games, emulators, launchers, or desktop applications.
- You want a full-desktop stream rather than a Steam-only front end.
- Your host uses a modern AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel GPU supported by Sunshine.
- You specifically need to investigate Moonlight’s documented Android HDR10 path and can satisfy its hardware checklist.
Improve the network before changing clients when
- Both applications show stutter on the same phone.
- The host PC is using weak or congested Wi-Fi.
- The phone is connected to a crowded 2.4 GHz network despite having 5 GHz available.
- Reducing resolution or bitrate immediately improves stability.
Bottom line
For a conventional Steam library, start with Steam Link: its host requirement and same-network pairing are the least complicated path. Pick Moonlight with Sunshine when flexibility is the deciding factor—especially a whole-desktop stream, non-Steam applications, or Sunshine’s broader modern GPU and platform support. Treat HDR as a Moonlight compatibility project rather than a guaranteed feature, and treat latency as a property to measure on your own equipment, not a published victory for either client.
