If you want a living-room PC for 1440p gaming, choose between a ready-built mini PC and a small-form-factor (SFF) desktop with a discrete graphics card. The Minisforum AtomMan G1 Pro is the strongest compact, prebuilt option in the available testing: PC Gamer measured 59 fps in Baldur’s Gate 3 and 52 fps in Metro Exodus Enhanced at Ultra 1440p, with the usual caveat that results vary by game and settings. An SFF system built around an AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT can provide considerably more graphics headroom and a future GPU-upgrade path, but the cited example is larger and requires more assembly and configuration.
Use Valve’s Steam Machine as the convenience and SteamOS reference point, not as a universal performance target. Valve says specifications may change before availability, and PC Gamer’s measured 28 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 was at 1440p Medium with ray tracing, Quality FSR and frame generation disabled. Those figures show why “1440p capable” must always be read alongside the game, quality preset, upscaling mode and frame-generation setting.

What counts as a Steam Machine alternative?
For this guide, an alternative is a compact Windows or Linux gaming PC that can sit beside a television and run a PC game library at a 1440p output resolution. There are two materially different designs:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Ready-built compact gaming mini PC: a small, assembled computer with a mobile or low-profile discrete GPU, memory, storage and an operating system. You install games and adjust settings, but you do not select every component.
- Small-form-factor desktop: a conventional desktop platform in a short or narrow case, usually with a full desktop CPU and discrete graphics card. It takes more planning and setup, yet generally offers higher graphics performance and easier component replacement.
An integrated-graphics mini PC is a third category. It can be excellent for lighter games and 1080p play, but the cited evidence does not establish it as a strong all-purpose 1440p replacement for a discrete-GPU system.

Valve’s Steam Machine is the baseline, not a guarantee
Valve describes the Steam Machine as a SteamOS living-room computer using a semi-custom AMD processor and graphics design. Its official product page warns that specifications may change ahead of availability, so check the live listing for your region before relying on a final specification, release status or price: Valve Steam Machine product page.
PC Gamer’s 2026 review lists a Zen 4 six-core/twelve-thread CPU, RDNA 3 graphics with 8 GB of GDDR6 and two storage capacities for the reviewed machine. The review also reports compromises in its benchmarks. In Cyberpunk 2077, it averaged 28 fps at 1440p Medium with ray tracing enabled, Quality FSR enabled and frame generation off. That is a useful reference configuration, not a claim that every game will run at 28 fps or that 1440p output always means native 1440p rendering. See the complete test context in PC Gamer’s Steam Machine review.
Upscaling changes the workload: the game renders internally below 2560×1440 and reconstructs the image to that output resolution. Frame generation can add displayed frames but does not make the underlying render faster and may introduce latency or visual artifacts. When comparing alternatives, record whether a result is native 1440p, uses an upscaler, enables ray tracing or uses frame generation.
Best ready-built compact option: Minisforum AtomMan G1 Pro
PC Gamer’s current mini-PC guide identifies the Minisforum AtomMan G1 Pro, fitted with a low-profile RTX 5060, as a compact gaming recommendation. The guide reports a 3.8-liter chassis and game-specific 1440p results that make it the clearest ready-built option in the available evidence. Read the current configuration, pricing and availability details in PC Gamer’s mini-PC guide, updated September 30, 2026.
Measured 1440p results
| Game | Preset and resolution | Average FPS | 1% low | What the result means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | Ultra, 1440p | 59 | 42 | Strong result for this tested title and configuration; not a promise for every game. |
| Metro Exodus Enhanced | Ultra, 1440p | 52 | 36 | Playable performance in this demanding test; heavier or newer games may require reductions. |
The figures are from PC Gamer’s 2026 guide and should be treated as measurements of those named games, not as a library-wide average. A 59-fps average with a 42-fps 1% low can feel smooth enough for a cinematic role-playing game, while a competitive shooter player may prefer a lower preset to increase consistency. Check whether the exact AtomMan G1 Pro SKU you can buy uses the same processor, GPU, memory and storage configuration as the reviewed unit; regional bundles can differ.
Why the 3.8-liter size matters
A 3.8-liter enclosure is easy to place on a shelf or behind a television, but the volume also limits cooling hardware, power-delivery choices and internal expansion. Expect to tune fan behavior and keep ventilation clear. A compact chassis can become more audible during long GPU-heavy sessions than its idle size suggests. Wireless peripherals, a short HDMI or DisplayPort cable and a reliable network connection are practical living-room considerations, not performance specifications.
Where it fits
Choose the AtomMan G1 Pro when you want an assembled computer with a very small footprint and are willing to adjust settings in demanding releases. It is a better fit for mixed libraries than an integrated-graphics mini PC because its low-profile discrete GPU supplies dedicated graphics memory and stronger shader throughput. It is not evidence of guaranteed Ultra 1440p performance in every current AAA game.

Highest graphics headroom: an SFF desktop with an RX 9060 XT
TechRadar describes an LDLC PC Box “Stim Machine” built around an AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT as an alternative that delivers substantially more graphics performance than the Steam Machine. The cited system is a component-based desktop rather than a standalone console-like product; the article is at TechRadar’s compact-build report.
The evidence does not provide a directly comparable FPS table for this build, so it would be misleading to attach a universal frame-rate claim to the RX 9060 XT. Its advantage is architectural and practical: a desktop discrete GPU has substantially more graphics resources than integrated graphics, and a desktop card can be replaced later if the case, power supply and motherboard support the upgrade.
The 11.5-liter compromise
The cited LDLC example occupies 11.5 liters, roughly three times the AtomMan’s stated 3.8 liters. That remains small beside a conventional tower, but it needs more shelf space and careful cable management. A larger case can allow better airflow and quieter sustained operation, yet the final noise level depends on the selected fans, cooler, power supply and room temperature.

Setup and ownership work
An SFF build may arrive without the turnkey experience associated with a SteamOS appliance. Depending on the seller and configuration, you may need to:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Confirm that the case accepts the RX 9060 XT’s length, slot thickness and power connector.
- Install or update the operating system, motherboard firmware, chipset software and graphics driver.
- Enable your preferred 1440p output, variable-refresh mode and controller support.
- Set fan curves and verify temperatures during a sustained game session.
- Check that storage and memory are installed in the capacities advertised and that the system can be opened for future service.
This extra work buys flexibility. You can replace storage, memory or the graphics card rather than replacing the whole computer. It also creates more opportunities for incompatibility, driver issues and acoustic tuning than a sealed mini PC.
Who should choose it?
Pick the RX 9060 XT SFF route if demanding games, higher settings and future GPU upgrades matter more than the smallest possible footprint. It is the most credible path to sustained 1440p headroom among the cited options, but it is a compatible desktop build, not a drop-in Steam Machine clone. Confirm the exact retailer configuration, total price, warranty and regional availability before ordering.
Budget and lighter-gaming option: integrated-graphics mini PC
PC Gamer’s guide also discusses the Minisforum Venus UM790 Pro. The guide frames it around playable 1080p gaming rather than presenting it as its principal 1440p recommendation. That distinction matters: an integrated GPU shares system memory and has less graphics throughput than the low-profile RTX 5060 in the AtomMan G1 Pro or a desktop RX 9060 XT.
An integrated-graphics system can still make sense for indie games, older releases, emulation, strategy titles and a living-room PC that doubles as a general-purpose computer. At 1440p, use a lower internal render resolution or a performance-oriented upscaler where the game supports one, and expect to reduce texture, shadow and effects settings. Do not treat the UM790 Pro as equivalent to a discrete-GPU mini PC simply because both fit behind a television.
Side-by-side decision table
| Path | Evidence-supported example | 1440p expectation | Footprint | Setup and upgrade trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ready-built compact gaming PC | Minisforum AtomMan G1 Pro with low-profile RTX 5060 | PC Gamer measured 59/42 fps in Baldur’s Gate 3 Ultra and 52/36 fps in Metro Exodus Enhanced Ultra at 1440p. Results depend on title and settings. | 3.8 liters in the cited guide | Minimal assembly; verify SKU, cooling, price and stock. Upgrade options are more limited than in an SFF desktop. |
| SFF desktop with discrete GPU | LDLC PC Box example with AMD RX 9060 XT | TechRadar reports substantially more graphics performance than the Steam Machine; no directly matching FPS results are supplied. | 11.5 liters in the cited example | More setup and compatibility checks; desktop GPU offers a clearer future upgrade path. |
| Integrated-graphics mini PC | Minisforum Venus UM790 Pro | Positioned by PC Gamer for playable 1080p gaming and lighter workloads, not as a general high-quality 1440p solution. | Exact volume not stated in the cited evidence | Lower complexity and potentially lower cost; shared-memory graphics limit demanding-game performance. |
How to compare 1440p performance honestly
Match the games you actually play
Start with five or six titles that represent your library: one competitive game, one open-world or ray-traced game, one strategy or simulation title and one older or independent game. A system that excels in Baldur’s Gate 3 may behave differently in a ray-traced shooter. Published results are useful only when the game, preset, resolution and image-quality features are specified.
Separate output resolution from render resolution
“1440p” can mean native 2560×1440 rendering or a lower internal resolution reconstructed to 2560×1440. Record the upscaler and its quality mode. “Quality” and “Performance” modes use different internal resolutions, so two results both labeled 1440p are not automatically comparable.
Read averages with frame-time context
An average FPS number hides dips. The AtomMan results include 1% lows, which provide a rough indication of slower moments: 42 fps against a 59-fps average in Baldur’s Gate 3, and 36 fps against a 52-fps average in Metro Exodus Enhanced. Do not compare those lows with an average from another test and call it a direct head-to-head; test methodology and scenes must match.
Account for ray tracing and frame generation
Ray tracing can reduce performance sharply, while frame generation changes displayed-frame behavior and latency. The Steam Machine’s cited Cyberpunk 2077 result used ray tracing and Quality FSR but no frame generation. Keep those switches consistent when evaluating an alternative, or label the results as separate modes.

Living-room requirements beyond FPS
Operating system and controller behavior
A SteamOS-style interface can be more appliance-like from a sofa, while a Windows mini PC or SFF build may need extra work for automatic sign-in, controller pairing, display scaling and sleep behavior. Decide whether you are comfortable maintaining a desktop interface with a keyboard and mouse. The convenience difference can outweigh a modest benchmark advantage for a family-room system.

Display and audio connections
Check the exact video outputs on the unit and your television or monitor, including refresh-rate support at 2560×1440. Verify that the chosen cable and display input support the desired refresh rate, HDR mode and variable refresh. For audio, determine whether you will use HDMI to the television, an AV receiver or a headset, then test output switching before moving the PC permanently.
Network and storage
Large PC games make wired Ethernet attractive if the machine is near a router; otherwise test wireless signal strength from the final shelf position. Confirm usable SSD capacity rather than just the advertised drive size, and leave room for operating-system updates and shader caches. External storage can expand a mini PC, but it may add cable clutter and slower load times depending on the interface.
Thermals, dust and noise
Small cases have less thermal mass and fewer fan-placement options. Keep intake and exhaust openings unobstructed, avoid stacking the computer on a heat-producing receiver and clean dust filters regularly. Run a demanding game for at least 20 to 30 minutes after setup while listening from the seating position; a temperature reading alone does not tell you whether the noise is acceptable in a quiet room.
A practical buying checklist
- Write down your target games and settings. Mark whether native 1440p, upscaling or ray tracing is essential.
- Choose the hardware class. Select the AtomMan-style mini PC for minimal setup, the RX 9060 XT SFF route for graphics headroom and upgrades, or integrated graphics for lighter 1080p-focused use.
- Verify the exact SKU. Match CPU, GPU, memory, SSD, power adapter and operating system to the configuration behind any benchmark you are using.
- Measure the space. Include room for power cables, airflow and access to ports; compare the cited 3.8-liter and 11.5-liter footprints rather than relying on “mini” in a product name.
- Calculate the complete cost. Include operating-system licensing if applicable, extra storage, a controller, a suitable cable and any memory or cooling changes.
- Check upgrade and service access. Find out whether the memory is replaceable, how many storage slots exist and whether the GPU or power supply can be changed.
- Plan the software setup. Install current chipset and graphics drivers, set the display refresh rate, pair controllers and configure automatic game-launch behavior.
- Test before permanent installation. Run your own representative games, record preset, resolution, upscaler, ray tracing and frame generation, and listen for fan noise from the couch.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every “1440p” label means high settings
Manufacturers and retailers can use 1440p to describe display output while relying on an upscaler or reduced preset. Demand the complete setting list. The cited Steam Machine result demonstrates that 1440p Medium with ray tracing and Quality FSR can average 28 fps in one demanding title.
Using one benchmark as a universal ranking
The AtomMan’s two published results cover two games, not every modern release. Use them as anchors, then test the titles you care about. The available evidence does not provide a matched three-way benchmark between the Steam Machine, AtomMan and RX 9060 XT build.
Ignoring the case and power envelope
A graphics card that fits electrically may not fit physically or thermally. For an SFF build, verify card dimensions, connector clearance, power-supply capacity and cooling direction before buying parts.
Comparing headline prices without the same inclusions
A bare component build, a mini PC with memory and storage, and a SteamOS appliance may include different accessories and software. Compare total ready-to-play cost in your country on the date you buy, and recheck stock and regional pricing because they change.

Choose the ready-built mini PC when convenience and size lead
The AtomMan G1 Pro is the evidence-backed choice for a very small, assembled gaming computer that can deliver 1440p play in selected demanding titles. Its 3.8-liter chassis is the easiest fit for a crowded media unit. Accept that you may lower settings or use upscaling in newer AAA games, and verify the exact reviewed configuration before purchase.
Choose the SFF desktop when performance and upgrades lead
The RX 9060 XT-based LDLC example is the better direction when you want more graphics capacity than a compact low-profile design and want to replace the GPU later. Its 11.5-liter footprint and additional setup are the price of that flexibility. Because no matching FPS results are supplied, evaluate the completed system with your own games rather than assuming a fixed frame rate.
Choose integrated graphics when your library is light
The Venus UM790 Pro category makes sense for 1080p-focused play, indie games, older titles and general desktop use where low complexity and compactness matter most. It is not the right evidence-based pick for a buyer whose primary requirement is high-quality 1440p in current AAA releases.
