If the game is unrated, marked Playable with caveats, or has a warning, check recent ProtonDB reports and investigate anti-cheat, launchers, codecs and other middleware before buying or installing it.
A compatibility badge is an expectation-setting signal, not a universal frame-rate promise. A title can meet Valve’s launch and usability criteria yet perform differently at your chosen resolution, graphics preset or frame-rate target.

What “compatible” means on a Steam Machine
Steam Machine is powered by SteamOS, Valve’s Linux-based operating system. A game with a native Linux build can run without a translation layer. A Windows-only game is generally run through Proton, the compatibility layer Valve ships with SteamOS. Valve says the vast majority of the Steam library runs this way and reported that more than 18,000 Steam titles were supported through Proton in 2025.

That library figure is a broad count, not a promise that every title has identical performance, complete feature support or trouble-free multiplayer. Proton compatibility can be affected by a game’s graphics API, copy protection, launcher, video codecs, anti-cheat service, patches and the specific Proton version in use.

Valve’s Steamworks documentation gives Steam Machine its own customer-visible compatibility rating. The review can identify Proton-specific blocking bugs and performance problems, so the badge is more meaningful than a simple “runs on Linux” label. It still does not replace checking the game’s hardware requirements.
The fastest way to check a game

Open the current Steam Store page
Find the game in Steam and scroll to the compatibility information. Look specifically for Steam Machine, SteamOS and Deck details rather than relying on a generic Windows system-requirements box. Store data can change after a game update, so check the page close to the time you intend to play.

Record the badge and every caveat
Note whether the title is Verified, Playable, Unsupported or unrated/unknown. Read the explanatory text. Steam Support directs users to the compatibility section for the requirements a title does not meet; those details can reveal a small text-entry issue, an on-screen keyboard requirement, an unsupported launcher or a more serious launch blocker.

Compare hardware separately
Read the game’s minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and operating-system requirements. Valve explicitly advises checking hardware requirements in addition to compatible operating systems. Compare those requirements with the capabilities of your particular Steam Machine and with the resolution and frame-rate target you want to use.

Audit online and video dependencies
Look for anti-cheat, a third-party launcher, DRM, required media codecs or an unusual video playback path. Valve warns that some anti-cheat providers and media codecs remain unsupported. A game can therefore launch to a menu yet fail when joining a protected multiplayer server, starting a cutscene or opening a launcher.

Check community evidence when Valve’s result is incomplete
Search ProtonDB for the exact game. Read recent reports, paying attention to the reporter’s Proton version, Steam Machine or comparable hardware, launch options, graphics settings and workarounds. Treat ProtonDB as supplementary community evidence, not as a replacement for Valve’s current store rating.

Change Proton only as a controlled test
If reports point to a different compatibility tool, use Steam’s documented setting: Library → select the game → Properties → Compatibility → force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool. Write down the original setting first. Test one change at a time so you know which adjustment helped or caused a regression.

How to read Steam’s compatibility badges

Steam Machine has its own rating in Valve’s Steamworks documentation; do not assume a Deck result automatically answers every Steam Machine question. The two devices use SteamOS and Proton concepts, but their hardware, display targets, drivers and performance envelopes can differ.
Hardware checks the badge cannot replace
Compatibility review is primarily an experience and launchability check. It is not a substitute for matching the game’s workload to the machine. Use the game’s published requirements and the Steam Machine’s official specifications for the exact model you are considering.

Valve’s official guidance does not state one universal Steam Machine hardware specification. Use the specifications for your exact unit, firmware and graphics configuration rather than assuming that every Steam Machine has the same performance.

Middleware that can make or break compatibility
Anti-cheat and protected multiplayer
Anti-cheat support is a separate question from whether the game opens. Valve notes that some anti-cheat providers are unsupported on SteamOS. Check whether the game’s online mode requires a particular provider and whether recent ProtonDB reports confirm successful multiplayer on the current build. A single-player campaign may work while ranked or server-based modes do not.
Third-party launchers and account checks
A launcher can add a login window, embedded browser, overlay or update process that was not present in Valve’s basic review path. Read the store caveat and community reports for first-run steps, controller navigation and whether the launcher must be opened manually. A game that needs a mouse and keyboard for every launch may be technically usable but a poor living-room experience.
Video playback and codecs
Some games depend on media codecs for intro movies, tutorials, dialogue scenes or in-game television. Valve warns that unsupported codecs can produce black screens, missing audio or a hang even when 3D rendering works. Search reports for the exact symptom rather than assuming that a failed cutscene means the whole game is unplayable.
DRM, overlays and other components
Copy-protection checks, an overlay, a browser-based sign-in or a separate updater can fail independently of the game executable. Record the component named in Valve’s warning or in ProtonDB reports. Do not infer that changing graphics settings will repair a launcher or authentication problem.
Using ProtonDB without being misled by old reports
ProtonDB is a crowdsourced database of Linux and Steam Deck reports. It is most useful when Valve’s result is unrated, when a Playable caveat is vague or when a recent game update appears to have changed behavior.

- Open the exact game entry. Confirm that the report concerns the same title, edition and major version. A remaster, beta branch or separate multiplayer client can behave differently.
- Sort for recency. Prefer reports made after the current game patch and current SteamOS/Proton releases. An old workaround may now be unnecessary or harmful.
- Match the hardware. Give more weight to reports from hardware with similar CPU, GPU memory and display target. A report from a low-power handheld is not a direct performance forecast for a desktop Steam Machine.
- Separate launch success from play quality. Look for notes about frame-time consistency, shader stutter, input, text size, cutscenes, save behavior and multiplayer, not just “starts.”
- Copy only reproducible workarounds. Note the exact Proton version, launch option and configuration change. Avoid a long list of tweaks; test one at a time and retain a way to undo each change.
Community reports are evidence, not a warranty. They may describe a particular driver, patch or hardware combination and can become obsolete when either the game or Proton changes.

Steam Support documents a per-game override. Use it when the store page or current reports identify a plausible Proton alternative, not as a random first step.
- Open Library and select the game.
- Open the game’s Properties.
- Select Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose the version you intend to test, apply the setting and launch the game.
- Test the failed feature: start-up, a saved game, a cutscene or multiplayer, depending on the original problem.
- If the result is worse, return to the same menu and restore the original setting. Remove other launch options before trying another variable.
A Proton override can change behavior without fixing an underlying unsupported anti-cheat service or codec. It can also introduce a new regression, so keep a short record of the version that worked and the date you tested it.
A practical comparison method for two or more games
When choosing between games, compare them on the dimensions that affect your actual use rather than sorting by badge alone.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The game does not launch
- Recheck the Steam compatibility panel for a known blocker.
- Confirm that the installation completed and that storage is available for updates.
- Compare your hardware with the game’s minimum requirements.
- Search recent ProtonDB reports for the same title and current Proton version.
- Test one documented Proton version override, then restore it if it does not help.
The game launches but multiplayer fails
- Identify the anti-cheat or account service named by the game.
- Check whether that service is supported on SteamOS; Valve specifically warns that some providers are not.
- Look for reports that test the actual online mode, not only the single-player campaign.
- Do not treat a successful menu launch as proof that protected servers will accept the client.
Menus work but a cutscene is black or silent
- Check for a codec or video-playback warning.
- Search ProtonDB for the game’s cutscene or media symptom and verify that the report is recent.
- Test the documented workaround exactly; changing GPU settings alone may not affect a codec problem.
Performance is below expectation
- Record resolution, graphics preset, upscaling and frame-rate target before comparing reports.
- Check whether the CPU or GPU requirement is the limiting factor.
- Allow for shader compilation, game patches, drivers and Proton changes when interpreting an older report.
- Remember that Verified or Playable does not set a universal frame-rate floor.
The launcher or text input is awkward
- Read the Playable caveat for the required keyboard, mouse or on-screen keyboard action.
- Test the complete path from starting Steam to loading a save, including sign-in and updates.
- Decide whether the extra step is acceptable for your setup; technical launchability and a convenient console-style experience are not identical.
What you can and cannot conclude from a rating
You can use a current rating to estimate whether Valve found a blocking issue and whether known SteamOS interaction paths work. You can use the detailed caveat to plan for a launcher, input adjustment or other exception. You cannot use the badge alone to promise a particular frame rate, graphics preset, display resolution or online feature.
Performance varies with the game’s requirements, resolution, settings, updates, drivers and the particular issue behind a Playable or Unsupported result. The most reliable decision combines the current Valve panel, a direct hardware comparison and recent reports that test the feature you care about.
A repeatable pre-purchase checklist
- Open the current Steam Store page.
- Write down the Steam Machine/SteamOS/Deck status and every listed caveat.
- Check CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and operating-system requirements.
- Match those requirements to your exact Steam Machine and intended resolution.
- Look for anti-cheat, launchers, DRM and codec dependencies.
- Read recent ProtonDB reports for the same edition and game version.
- Confirm controller, text and launcher usability.
- Decide whether any Proton override or launch option is acceptable to maintain.
- After installation, test the feature that matters most before investing significant play time.
This process answers the practical question—“Will this game run on my Steam Machine?”—without confusing a compatibility label with a performance guarantee. Verified is the strongest starting signal, Playable requires reading the exception, Unsupported calls for caution, and an unrated game requires the most independent checking.
