But the concern behind the January 2026 report was justified: Valve’s confirmed US price is $1,049 for the 512GB model, rising to $1,349 for 2TB. That makes the Steam Machine a premium, compact SteamOS gaming PC—not an obvious low-cost console.
What the early listing actually showed
On January 12, 2026, reporting from T3 identified two Steam Machine prices in the source code of Czech retailer Smarty.cz’s product pages:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Model | Listed price | Approximate conversion reported at the time | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 512GB | 19,826 CZK | About $955 / £710 | Unconfirmed retailer figure |
| 2TB | 22,305 CZK | About $1,072 / £796 | Unconfirmed retailer figure |
The figures were not presented as a Valve announcement, and there was no evidence that they represented a final preorder, confirmed stock allocation, or completed payment process. Retailers commonly create product records before manufacturers finalize regional pricing, so the numbers could have been placeholders.
There was also an inconsistency in the original coverage: its quick summary gave a different conversion for the 512GB model than the article body. The original Czech-koruna figures are the more useful record. Currency conversions are only rough snapshots and do not account for local taxes, retailer margins, or Valve’s actual regional pricing.

Valve’s confirmed Steam Machine prices
Valve later published official prices and reservation information through its Steam Hardware announcement. In the US, the confirmed prices are:
| Configuration | US price |
|---|---|
| 512GB Steam Machine | $1,049 |
| 512GB Steam Machine with Steam Controller | $1,128 |
| 2TB Steam Machine | $1,349 |
| 2TB Steam Machine with Steam Controller | $1,428 |
| Steam Controller separately | $99 |
The Steam Store’s indexed US listing also shows the Steam Machine at $1,049, the Steam Controller at $99, and the Steam Deck at $789. The store information is dated June 22, 2026 in the listing and was checked in the latest available storefront data for this report. Prices and availability can vary by region and change over time.

Those regional figures are more authoritative than converting the leaked Czech listing. A US price, a VAT-inclusive European price, and a Czech retailer listing should not be treated as interchangeable.
Why did the price change?
Valve said its original expectations changed as the hardware approached launch. The company had expected PC component costs to decline over time, as they historically often have, but said that assumption was disrupted by sharply higher costs and availability problems.
Valve specifically cited RAM, storage, component shortages, and overall manufacturing costs. It also said some components were unavailable at any price for periods of time, limiting the number of Steam Machines it could produce for launch.
That is Valve’s explanation, not independent proof that the machine offers good value. A higher bill of materials can explain a price increase without settling whether the resulting product is worth buying.

Why the price looks troubling
The key issue is not merely that the Steam Machine costs around $1,000. It is that Valve is positioning it closer to a compact PC than to a conventional subsidized console.
Traditional console makers can sometimes sell hardware at a loss and recover money through games, platform fees, or subscriptions. Valve’s stated approach is different: the Steam Machine is an open PC-style device connected to the Steam ecosystem, rather than hardware locked to a single console platform.
That creates a difficult comparison. A console buyer may reasonably expect a standardized, plug-and-play appliance with heavily optimized games. A Steam Machine buyer is paying for a compact preconfigured computer, SteamOS integration, and living-room convenience. The value question therefore depends on which category matters to you.
Steam Machine versus the alternatives
Against a conventional console
At $1,049 before any extra accessories, the 512GB Steam Machine sits far above the normal entry point for mainstream console hardware. It is a poor fit for someone whose priority is simply the cheapest route to television gaming.

A conventional console is usually the stronger choice if you want:
- simple setup and standardized game performance;
- platform-specific exclusives;
- a broad range of console-focused accessories;
- minimal graphics-setting or compatibility decisions; and
- the lowest upfront hardware cost.
The Steam Machine is more compelling if you value PC storefront flexibility, an existing Steam library, SteamOS, and a compact living-room computer. It may support a wider PC-oriented use case, but that also means accepting occasional configuration work and less uniform compatibility.
Do not use a converted console price as a direct regional comparison. Retail prices, taxes, bundles, and availability differ by market.

Against Steam Deck
The indexed US Steam Store listing puts the Steam Deck at $789 and the 512GB Steam Machine at $1,049—a nominal difference of $260. They are not direct performance substitutes.
The Deck is a handheld with a built-in display, battery, controls, and OLED-screen variants in its product family. The Steam Machine is designed primarily to stay connected to a television and external peripherals. The Deck makes sense for portable play and can also be connected to a larger screen; the Steam Machine makes more sense as a permanent living-room system.
A Steam Deck owner should ask whether a dedicated TV box solves a problem they actually have. If an existing Deck, PC, or Steam Link setup already provides acceptable living-room access, spending at least $1,049 on another Steam device is difficult to justify on convenience alone.
Against a self-built or prebuilt gaming PC
This is the most important value comparison, but it cannot be answered honestly with a blanket claim that “a PC is cheaper.” A like-for-like comparison would require current component prices, a comparable graphics and processor configuration, operating-system costs, case size, assembly, cooling, and performance testing.
A carefully selected desktop may offer more upgradeability or better component value. The Steam Machine’s price is instead buying a particular package:
Recommended Free Tools
- a compact form factor;
- a preconfigured living-room experience;
- SteamOS integration;
- Valve hardware and software support; and
- less setup than building and configuring a desktop yourself.
The trade-off is potentially less flexibility, fewer upgrade options, and a higher price than a larger desktop with comparable parts. Buyers should treat the premium as a convenience and form-factor cost, not automatically as a performance bargain.
Against a gaming laptop
A gaming laptop includes a screen, keyboard, trackpad, battery, and portability. It can also offer broader Windows compatibility. The Steam Machine offers none of those built-in features, but may be a cleaner permanent television setup and a more natural couch-gaming device.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Storage and accessory costs matter
The 512GB model is the lower-cost entry point, but it may not be the practical baseline for everyone. Modern PC games can be large, and a buyer with a substantial Steam library may quickly face storage management. The available evidence does not establish the model’s usable capacity after system software, so it would be misleading to promise a specific free-space figure.
The 2TB model costs $300 more than the 512GB model. That is a significant premium if judged only by storage capacity. It may still be worthwhile for someone who prioritizes internal-storage convenience and does not want to manage external devices or replace storage later. “Better value” here means greater convenience, not necessarily the lowest cost per gigabyte.
The machine also does not automatically include a Steam Controller. The controller costs $99 separately, while each bundle is $79 more than the equivalent machine alone. That makes the bundle cheaper than buying the controller separately, but buyers who already own a compatible gamepad should not add the cost unnecessarily.
Availability was part of the launch story
Valve did not describe the launch as a completely unrestricted preorder. Its reservation process required a Steam account in good standing, a Steam purchase made before April 27, 2026, and one signup per household. Valve said people signing up after the initial cutoff would be placed at the back of the waitlist and that model-specific queues would be randomized.
That matters because the practical question was not only “What is the price?” but also “Can I obtain one?” Valve linked the limited launch supply to the component shortages it described. A listed price is not the same thing as immediate availability, and regional stock can differ.

It makes the most sense for:
- PC gamers with a large Steam library who want a dedicated TV system;
- buyers who prefer SteamOS to Windows;
- people who want a compact, preconfigured gaming PC and do not want to build a desktop;
- users who value living-room simplicity more than maximum upgradeability; and
- buyers comfortable with occasional PC-style settings changes or compatibility workarounds.
It is a poor fit for:
- buyers seeking the cheapest route to console gaming;
- people who primarily want platform exclusives and standardized optimization;
- owners of a capable gaming PC who can already use Steam Link;
- buyers who expect substantial future upgrades;
- households that need a controller, keyboard, mouse, or extra storage but have not included those costs; and
- anyone expecting every PC game to work exactly like a console game without configuration.
So, was the early price report wrong?
The retailer leak was not reliable evidence of Valve’s MSRP. The Czech figures were database or source-code listings, not a confirmed announcement, and they did not exactly match the final US prices.
But the leak was directionally useful. It warned that the Steam Machine was likely to occupy a premium price bracket, and Valve’s confirmed $1,049 starting price validated that broader concern. The final product is best understood as a specialized compact SteamOS PC—not a mass-market console bargain.
For a console buyer comparing only upfront cost, the Steam Machine looks difficult to justify. For a PC gamer who specifically wants a small, supported SteamOS box in the living room, the premium may be acceptable. The right verdict depends less on whether the number is “too high” in isolation than on whether you value its form factor and convenience enough to pay PC hardware money for them.
