Those are results from PC Guide’s poll, not a representative measure of what gamers generally would pay.
What did the Steam Machine price poll ask?
PC Guide asked readers: “What is the maximum price you would you pay for Valve’s Steam Machine?” The poll presented six price bands:
- Less than $400
- $400–$499
- $500–$599
- $600–$699
- $700–$799
- More than $800
In its article dated December 15, 2025, PC Guide said that, after nearly 700 votes, the $600–$699 band was the most popular, at just under 30%. It also reported that 70% chose a price in the $500–$700 region. These figures are PC Guide’s reported results, not an independently verified count. PC Guide’s poll article does not explain how respondents were recruited or whether the results were weighted.
Why the poll’s vote count is unclear
The page also displays “1652” above the embedded poll, but does not explain how that figure relates to the article’s description of nearly 700 votes. The page was accessed on October 8, 2026, and includes deal material marked correct as of September 21, 2026, despite the article’s December 15, 2025 date. The displayed number therefore should not be treated as a reconciled or verified poll total, and the reported percentages should not be recalculated from it.

What the result does—and does not—show
The result identifies the most popular response band among participants in this particular opt-in poll. It does not establish what gamers generally are willing to pay, predict sales, or prove market-wide demand. PC Guide provides no respondent demographics or breakdowns by location, income, existing hardware, or intended Steam Machine model. The broad bands also do not reveal how responses were distributed within each range.
PC Guide described Valve’s Steam Machine as a console-like mini-PC and said Valve had not announced a price when the article was written. That is a historical statement from 2025, not confirmation of the device’s current price or retail status. The poll alone cannot establish whether its leading band is close to a current selling price.
