Choose Steam Deck if you want to play away from a desk and keep the option of connecting to a television or monitor. Choose Steam Machine if you want a permanently connected SteamOS computer for a television or desk and value the substantially higher hardware class Valve lists. The better choice depends on where you play, the screen you already own, the games you need to run, and the cost of the complete setup—not just the device.
Steam Deck and Steam Machine solve different problems
Steam Deck is a portable PC with an integrated display, controls, battery and SteamOS. Valve describes it as “Powerful, portable PC gaming, designed for comfort and a console-like user experience” on its Steam Deck product page. You can use it handheld, connect it to a monitor or television over USB-C, or add Valve’s optional dock for a more conventional desk or living-room setup.

Steam Machine is a compact PC designed around an external display. It has no built-in screen, controls or battery, so it needs AC power, a television or monitor, and an input device. Its Valve product page lists a higher-tier AMD processor and graphics configuration than Steam Deck and describes the system as running SteamOS.

Specifications in the table come from Valve’s product pages for Steam Deck and Steam Machine. Valve notes that some Steam Machine specifications may change before availability.
Hardware: how much more powerful is Steam Machine?
Valve says Steam Machine has “over six times the horsepower of Steam Deck.” That is a vendor marketing statement, not an independently measured benchmark. It should be read alongside Valve’s warning that specifications may change before the system becomes available. The statement does indicate the intended product tier: Steam Machine is designed to drive a larger external display and handle demanding desktop-style workloads, while Deck targets efficient portable play.
Steam Deck OLED hardware
The current OLED listing specifies a 6 nm AMD APU with a Zen 2 four-core/eight-thread CPU and RDNA 2 graphics with eight compute units. It has 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory, 512 GB or 1 TB NVMe storage options, and a microSD slot. Its 7.4-inch display runs at 1280 × 800 and supports refresh rates up to 90 Hz. Valve quotes 3–12 hours of gameplay from the 50 Wh battery, with the range changing according to the game, settings and other conditions.
Steam Machine hardware
Valve lists a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 six-core/12-thread CPU, an RDNA3 28-compute-unit GPU, 16 GB of DDR5 system memory and 8 GB of GDDR6 video memory. Storage is listed as either 512 GB or 2 TB, with a microSD slot. Those are the published configurations, not a promise that every region or launch package will offer both options.
Do not convert these component lists into guaranteed frame rates. No independent benchmark accompanies the cited pages, and performance will vary with resolution, graphics settings, game engine, drivers and the final shipping specification.

Display and living-room setup
When Deck is the better screen solution
Deck includes its own screen and controls, so it is usable as soon as it is charged and configured. That matters in a bedroom, on a commute, during travel or in a home where the television is often occupied. Its 1280 × 800 panel is smaller and lower resolution than a typical living-room television, but it avoids buying a separate display.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor television play, connect the Deck by USB-C to a compatible display or use the optional Steam Deck Docking Station. Valve says the dock provides HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4, supports up to 4K at 60 Hz or 1440p at 120 Hz on external displays, and includes three USB-A ports, Gigabit Ethernet and power passthrough. Those output ceilings describe what the dock supports; they do not mean every game will render at those resolutions or refresh rates.
When Machine is the better screen solution
Machine is built around the screen you already use. HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 outputs let you connect a television or monitor, while USB-A, USB-C and Gigabit Ethernet accommodate peripherals and wired networking. It is a cleaner choice when the system will remain in one room and you want a traditional couch or desk arrangement without attaching and detaching a handheld.
Budget for the complete setup: an external display if you do not already have one, a controller or keyboard and mouse, power and any required cables. The product itself is only one part of the cost.
Portability, power and everyday use
Deck’s advantage: play anywhere
The Deck’s battery is the defining difference. Valve’s 3–12-hour estimate is deliberately broad because a lightweight 2D game, a demanding 3D title, screen brightness, frame-rate limits and wireless use draw power differently. Treat it as a product-range estimate rather than a guarantee for a particular game.

Machine’s advantage: always-ready installation
Machine requires AC power and an external screen, so it is not a travel computer in the Deck sense. In return, it can stay connected to your television, network and controller. That reduces cable changes and makes it a better fit for a household that treats SteamOS as a console-like appliance.
SteamOS and game compatibility
Both products use SteamOS, Valve’s Linux-based operating system. Valve explains that Proton supports many Windows games and that compatibility labels indicate the expected experience. The SteamOS page says Steam Deck and Legion Go S are the officially supported devices “right now” on that page, while the Steam Machine product page says the new system runs SteamOS and that its ratings are being added to Valve’s Verified program.
Do not assume that a game working on Deck will have the same experience on Machine, or that every Windows game will launch on either device. Before buying, check each important title’s Steam listing and compatibility information. Pay particular attention to:
- Whether the game is marked Verified, Playable, Unsupported or has no rating.
- Launcher, anti-cheat or media-codec requirements that can affect Proton.
- Control and text legibility on a television versus Deck’s smaller screen.
- Storage size and shader-cache space for a large library.
Compatibility labels and device support can change with updates. Verify the status of games you actually intend to play rather than relying on a general reputation for SteamOS.
Which setup fits each type of player?
Choose Steam Deck when…
- You want handheld play to be the primary experience.
- You move between rooms or travel and do not want to depend on a television.
- You already own a television or monitor and only need an optional dock for occasional big-screen sessions.
- Your library consists mainly of games with established Deck compatibility.
- You prefer one integrated device instead of a separate computer, display and controller.
Choose Steam Machine when…
- Your system will stay beside a television or desk monitor.
- You want the higher CPU and GPU class Valve lists for more demanding desktop-style gaming.
- You prefer a permanent wired network, multiple display outputs and readily attached USB peripherals.
- You do not need battery operation or a built-in screen.
- You are prepared to verify the final specifications and availability before ordering.
Consider both if your needs are split
A Deck can cover portable play now and connect to a docked television later. A Machine can serve as the fixed, higher-performance SteamOS computer while a separate handheld handles travel. Buying both only makes sense when those are genuinely different use cases; docking a Deck is not a performance upgrade, and a Machine does not replace the convenience of a battery-powered handheld.

Deck OLED is listed with 512 GB and 1 TB NVMe options; Machine is listed with 512 GB and 2 TB options. Both have microSD expansion. A large modern library can fill 512 GB quickly, particularly when several games keep shader caches or downloadable content locally. On the other hand, paying for capacity you will not use is unnecessary if you rotate a small number of games.

- USB devices: Count controllers, keyboards, mice, storage drives and headsets. The dock adds three USB-A ports to Deck.
- Audio: Check how your television, monitor, USB device or controller will carry sound.
- Power: Deck needs a suitable charger when docked; Machine needs a permanent AC connection.

How to choose in five steps
- Mark your main location. If most sessions happen away from a television or desk, start with Deck. If nearly every session is in one room, start with Machine.
- List the games that matter. Check each title’s current SteamOS and device compatibility label, including anti-cheat and launcher requirements.
- Measure the screen plan. Decide whether you need a built-in handheld screen, an existing television, a desk monitor or both.
- Price the complete setup. Add a dock and controller to Deck if needed; add a display and controller to Machine if you do not already own them. Use the current regional prices shown by Valve rather than an old headline figure.
- Recheck Machine’s final specification. Valve says some Steam Machine details may change before availability, so confirm the product page’s configuration and ordering information at the time you buy.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“A dock turns Deck into a Steam Machine.”
It does not. The dock supplies display outputs, USB ports, Ethernet and power passthrough. The Deck’s processor, graphics, memory and battery remain the same.
“Six times the horsepower means six times the frame rate.”
That conclusion is not supported. “Over six times the horsepower” is Valve’s own marketing claim, not an independent benchmark. Game engines, resolution, settings and final hardware determine real performance.
“SteamOS means every Steam game works.”
SteamOS uses Proton for many Windows games, but compatibility is not universal. Check the individual game and any launcher or anti-cheat dependency.
“The storage headline is the total cost.”
A fixed Machine setup may need a display and controller; a television setup with Deck may need a dock, charger arrangement and controller. Compare complete systems, not just the base device.

Bottom line
For a player asking “Steam Deck or Steam Machine for TV gaming?”, the answer depends on whether television play is the whole point. Choose Steam Machine for a dedicated, always-connected SteamOS PC and the higher hardware class Valve lists, while treating its performance language and specifications as provisional until independent testing and final availability. Choose Steam Deck when portability, an integrated screen and flexible docked use matter more. Its hardware is less powerful, but it is the only one of the two that works without an external display or wall outlet.
