Choose Steam Next Fest when you want a concentrated, time-limited run through upcoming PC releases. Choose itch.io when you want an always-available stream of independent, experimental, browser-playable, or potentially DRM-free projects. Neither platform has an official apples-to-apples count or quality score proving it has better demos overall; the better choice depends on whether you value organized previews or long-tail creator discovery.
What each platform is actually for
Steam Next Fest and itch.io both let you try games without paying for the playable preview, but they solve different discovery problems. Steam Next Fest is an event: Valve describes it as a weeklong promotion for upcoming games with playable demos. itch.io is an open marketplace where independent creators publish projects on pages they control, including free games, demos, pay-what-you-want releases, and paid work.

That distinction matters more than any imagined leaderboard. Next Fest gives you a large, organized batch of games tied to a festival schedule. itch.io gives you a persistent catalog whose contents and presentation change as creators upload new work, run jams, or update existing projects.

How the event works
Participating developers register games for a particular festival edition. Steam groups those games with event categories and store tags, then promotes them together during the event window. Alongside demos, the event can include developer livestreams and chats, so you can see a game, play its preview, and hear the team explain what it is building without leaving the event ecosystem.

The exact dates, registration deadlines, and participation rules are edition-specific. Treat the relevant festival page and Valve’s current event documentation as the authority for a particular Next Fest rather than assuming every edition follows the same calendar.
Finding and installing a demo
- Open the current Steam Next Fest event page during its published dates.
- Use the event’s categories, tags, recommendations, or featured programming to narrow the list. Categories can help separate genres or formats; tags are useful when you already know the mechanics or mood you want.
- Hover over a participating game or open its event listing and look for the demo installation control. Valve’s press-preview instructions describe using an install-demo button for participating titles.
- Install the demo through Steam, then launch it from your library like other Steam software.
- Wishlist games you want to follow. Steam’s event guidance specifically highlights wishlisting as a way to receive a launch notification.
- Return to the event’s livestreams or chats when a developer session can answer questions that the demo itself cannot.
This workflow is efficient if your goal is breadth in a short period. A single event page supplies a common set of filters, a consistent installation path, and a natural way to remember games that are not releasing yet.
What “free” means on Steam Next Fest
The playable demo is offered without a demo purchase during the event. That does not make the eventual game free. Next Fest is designed primarily around upcoming releases, many of which are commercial games. Check the individual game’s store page for its planned release and pricing information before treating a demo as a free full game.
Where Steam Next Fest is strongest
- Upcoming-release sampling: You can sample many games that are still in development or approaching launch.
- Organized signal: Event categories, store tags, recommendations, official programming, and wishlists reduce the work of building a shortlist.
- One-client installation: Demos are installed through Steam rather than through a different downloader for every project.
- Time-boxed momentum: The weeklong format creates a clear reason to try games now instead of postponing them indefinitely.
- Developer access: Livestreams and chats add context and let you ask questions during the event.
itch.io: the better long-tail discovery library
How the marketplace works
itch.io describes itself as an open marketplace for independent digital creators and video games. A creator can set a project’s minimum price to zero, allow optional support from fans, sell a paid project, or include the project in a bundle. Creators also control much of the look and information on their project pages, so two demos can differ greatly in how clearly they explain controls, length, known issues, and supported systems.
There is no single festival week that defines the catalog. Projects remain discoverable through their pages, browse tools, staff picks, recommendations, jams, and feeds. The result is less uniform than Next Fest, but it includes work that would not fit an upcoming commercial-release event: prototypes, short experiments, game-jam entries, interactive fiction, small tools, browser games, and complete free releases.

How creators publish a free demo
itch.io’s creator documentation says a developer does not need a separate demo page. The developer uploads the demo file to the existing project page and checks “This file is a demo and can be downloaded for free.” That setup lets a single page present the full game, a demo, or several downloadable files while keeping the creator’s description, screenshots, and updates together.
Finding and playing projects
- Start with browse pages for free games or with staff picks if you want an editorial starting point.
- Use the randomizer when you want discovery without searching by a familiar genre or keyword.
- Check personalized recommendations after you have viewed or played several projects.
- Browse game jams for tightly themed work and unusual mechanics.
- Open the project page and read the creator’s notes about platform, controls, file type, and whether the item is a demo, a complete free game, or a pay-what-you-want release.
- Choose the available play method. Some projects run in a browser; others provide downloads for one or more operating systems.
- If you want a desktop library, use the itch app. Its official description says it downloads, installs, updates, and runs itch.io games and software on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with discovery available inside the app.
The itch.io API also exposes RSS feeds for browse pages such as free games. Readers who prefer a feed reader can use those feeds to monitor new projects instead of repeatedly checking a festival page.
Where itch.io is strongest
- Persistent access: Discovery does not depend on a festival start or end date.
- Independent and experimental work: The open marketplace accommodates prototypes, game-jam games, creator experiments, and formats that are not typical commercial Steam previews.
- Browser play: A project may offer an in-browser version, avoiding an installation when the creator has enabled that option.
- Creator-controlled pages: Developers can explain a project’s context, update it directly, and present several files or editions together.
- Flexible pricing: Projects may be free, pay-what-you-want, bundled, or paid; the minimum price can be zero.
- Potentially DRM-free downloads: Some creators distribute files without digital-rights-management restrictions, but this is a project-level property, not a guarantee for every itch.io item.
Steam Next Fest vs. itch.io at a glance
| Decision point | Steam Next Fest | itch.io |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery shape | A weeklong event with a defined start and end for each edition | An always-on marketplace with ongoing uploads, updates, jams, and feeds |
| Main focus | Upcoming games expected to release on Steam | Independent digital projects, including free, experimental, browser, DRM-free, pay-what-you-want, and paid work |
| Curation and filtering | Event categories, Steam tags, recommendations, featured programming, and wishlists | Creator-designed pages, staff picks, randomizer, personalized recommendations, jams, and RSS browse feeds |
| How you get the demo | Install the participating demo through Steam | Download from the project page, use the itch app, or play in a browser when the creator provides that option |
| Operating-system handling | Steam manages installation for the participating Steam build | The project page or itch app lists the files and supported systems; the app supports Windows, macOS, and Linux |
| Time pressure | High: visibility and participation are tied to the edition’s dates | Low: projects can remain discoverable outside a festival schedule |
| Typical full-game model | Often an upcoming commercial release; the demo is a preview, not the full game | Could be free, pay-what-you-want, bundled, or paid; inspect the individual project page |
| Best fit | Players who want a large, organized burst of upcoming PC demos | Players who want unusual, persistent, creator-led discovery |
Which platform has the better variety?
“Variety” has two meanings here. Steam Next Fest offers variety inside a curated event: many genres and styles appear, but the common denominator is an upcoming game participating in that edition. itch.io offers variety across the entire independent-development spectrum. Its catalog can include a polished commercial demo, a ten-minute prototype, a browser toy, a complete free game, or a game-jam entry on the same browse page.
If you define variety as the number of different kinds of projects you can encounter, itch.io is the stronger fit. If you define it as the number of upcoming commercial games you can sample in one organized session, Next Fest is more useful. No official source establishes an apples-to-apples total count of free demos or proves that either platform has a higher average quality, so a claim that one universally has “more” or “better” demos would overstate the available evidence.
How curation changes the signal you get
Steam’s event signal
Steam’s event structure gives every participating demo a shared context: the game is being promoted as an upcoming release, and Steam supplies tags, categories, recommendations, and a wishlist path. That makes it easier to compare games on a common timeline. The trade-off is that the event’s goals and registration rules shape what appears, so work outside the upcoming-Steam-release model is less likely to be represented.

itch.io’s creator and community signal
itch.io distributes curation across creators, staff picks, recommendation systems, random discovery, jams, and user-controlled pages. A creator can provide unusually detailed context—or very little. Staff picks and recommendations can surface strong starting points, while the randomizer is intentionally less predictable. Feeds are useful when you want a steady stream rather than a single event rush.
Because the page quality and metadata vary, read the project description before downloading. Confirm whether you are looking at a demo or the complete project, whether the file matches your operating system, and whether the creator lists controls or known limitations.
Installation, browser play, and DRM
Steam
Steam Next Fest demos use Steam’s installation flow. This is convenient when you already organize your games in Steam, because downloading and launching happen through the same client and the demo can sit alongside your other library items. It also means the Steam version is the relevant build: a developer may provide a different file or platform elsewhere, but Next Fest’s install control is tied to the participating Steam listing.
itch.io
itch.io gives creators more than one delivery model. A project may expose a downloadable archive, an executable for a particular desktop platform, a browser build, or several of those options. The itch app can manage downloads, installation, updates, and launches on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Browser play is convenient for short experiments, but it is available only when the creator has uploaded a browser-compatible build.
Some itch.io downloads are DRM-free, which can make them easier to archive or run independently of a storefront client. Do not infer that every project is DRM-free: check the project’s own notes and files.

Are itch.io demos safe to download?
itch.io’s open marketplace is a strength for creator freedom, but it also means file quality, documentation, and packaging vary from project to project. The platform itself does not turn every upload into a uniform, audited build. Treat each download as software from an individual creator.
- Prefer the creator’s official project page and read the description, update history, and comments.
- Check the listed operating system and file type before opening anything.
- Scan downloaded archives and executables with your operating system’s security tools.
- Be cautious when a project asks for permissions unrelated to its stated function or provides an unexpected installer.
- For a first look at a small experiment, use a browser version when one is offered, or test a download in an isolated user account or virtual machine if that fits your setup.
- Keep backups of important files and do not assume a prototype has the same support or update cadence as a commercial release.
These are practical download precautions, not a claim that itch.io projects are inherently unsafe. The relevant decision is the specific creator, file, and build you are about to run.
How to choose in under a minute
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Trying many unreleased games this week | Steam Next Fest | The event concentrates participating demos and supplies a shared set of filters. |
| Finding strange, short, or experimental projects | itch.io | The open marketplace includes prototypes, jams, browser games, and creator experiments. |
| Keeping discovery available year-round | itch.io | Browse pages, staff picks, recommendations, jams, and feeds are not tied to a festival week. |
| Following commercial games toward launch | Steam Next Fest | Wishlist support connects a demo session to launch notifications. |
| Playing without installing anything | itch.io, when a browser build exists | Browser play is project-dependent and must be offered by the creator. |
| Managing desktop downloads in one app across Windows, macOS, and Linux | itch.io app | The official app supports downloading, installing, updating, and running itch.io software on those systems. |
A practical two-pass discovery method
Pass one: use Next Fest for breadth
- Set a time limit for the festival week so you do not install every listing impulsively.
- Filter by genres or mechanics you genuinely intend to play.
- Install short-looking demos first, then keep longer or more demanding previews for a second session.
- Wishlist games that make a strong impression, even if you do not finish the demo.
- Use a developer livestream or chat to resolve questions about release plans, accessibility, or systems before committing more time.
Pass two: use itch.io for depth and novelty
- Begin with staff picks or a free-games browse page rather than searching only for familiar commercial genres.
- Try the randomizer or a game jam to break out of your usual recommendations.
- On each project page, identify whether the download is a demo or a complete game and note the supported platform.
- Choose browser play for a quick test, or install through the itch app when you want updates and library management.
- Subscribe to a relevant RSS browse feed if you want new projects to arrive continuously.
This two-pass approach uses each platform for the problem it handles best instead of treating one storefront as a replacement for the other.
What the historical itch.io payment figure means
itch.io’s pricing documentation reproduces a figure from a 2015 blog post: 30% of money spent on itch.io was described as “extra” money above the minimum, and the average purchase was described as about $1.50 above the minimum. That is historical marketplace context, not a current platform-wide measurement. It does not tell you what a present-day demo costs, whether a particular project is free, or how much a creator will receive for a purchase.

For a current decision, read the project’s displayed minimum price and payment options. A free demo can lead to a paid full game, a pay-what-you-want project, a bundle, or a complete free release; those are separate choices on the project page.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Common points of confusion and fixes
“I thought a Next Fest demo meant the game was free.”
It means the playable preview is available without a demo purchase. Look at the game’s store listing for the full release model and expected price.
“The itch.io page says free, but I cannot find a demo.”
“Free” may describe the complete project rather than a demo. Read the file labels and description. A creator following itch.io’s documented workflow marks a demo file as a demo on the existing project page; there may not be a separate page named “Demo.”
“The itch.io download will not run.”
Recheck the project’s supported operating system, extract the archive before launching an executable, and look for a creator-provided readme or update note. If the page offers a browser build, use it to confirm that the project itself works before troubleshooting a platform-specific download.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“I missed the Next Fest event.”
Next Fest participation and visibility are tied to edition dates. Search for the game’s regular Steam store page to see whether its developer still provides a demo, and use itch.io’s persistent browse tools when you want alternatives outside the event window.
“I cannot decide from the demo alone.”
Use Steam’s wishlist and developer livestreams for release-focused information. On itch.io, read the creator’s project notes, updates, comments, and available files; those pages often provide context that a short preview cannot.
Bottom line
Steam Next Fest is the better answer to “Where can I try a bunch of upcoming game demos at once?” Its weeklong event, install-through-Steam workflow, categories, tags, livestreams, and wishlists make it an efficient commercial-release sampler. itch.io is the better answer to “Where can I find unusual free indie demos whenever I want?” Its open, creator-controlled marketplace supports persistent discovery across browser games, prototypes, jams, DRM-free downloads, free releases, and flexible pricing. Pick the platform that matches your discovery goal, and remember that a free demo is a preview—not proof that the eventual full game will also be free.
