Steam is planning to change how discounted games and promotional events are featured in its Discounts & Events section in early 2027. Valve says it wants to move from scheduled, curated placements toward a more dynamic and personalized system. The announcement concerns how promotions are surfaced—not an announced end to Steam’s seasonal sales or a change to game prices.
What is changing on Steam’s Discounts & Events page?
Today, placements in the section are curated and scheduled either by developers and publishers through Steamworks or by Valve’s Steam team. Valve plans to move away from that manual, calendar-based approach so more discounted games and sale events have a chance to appear on the Steam homepage and elsewhere, rather than competing for a small, fixed number of slots.

Are Steam’s seasonal sales ending?
No end to Steam’s seasonal sales has been announced. The planned change is about promotional placements and discovery; Valve’s published calendar continues to list the annual seasonal sales. The dates below are for those sales, not for the rollout of the new Discounts & Events system.

What results does Valve say it saw in testing?
Valve reported that its test showed 10 times as many games to customers in the Discounts & Events section in a given day, as well as “meaningful increases” in store-page visits, wishlists, and cart additions. The 10-times figure and the other outcomes are Valve’s reported test results, relayed in contemporaneous GamesRadar coverage.
The public account does not give the experiment’s duration, baseline, design, or independently audited figures. Valve did not provide a numerical lift for visits, wishlists, or cart additions. The test result therefore does not guarantee that any particular game will receive more exposure or make more sales under the eventual system.

When will the new system launch, and what is still unknown?
Valve said it is planning the change for early 2027, but had not announced a firm implementation date as of October 4, 2026. Valve also said the details were still being worked out. It has not disclosed the personalization inputs, ranking rules, geographic rollout, or final developer tools, so those mechanics cannot yet be described.
Valve cautioned that the system may not be perfect immediately, while expressing confidence it would produce better outcomes for customers and developers. The announcement does not name an individual speaker.

What should developers know about discounts and seasonal sales?
The discovery changes do not replace Steamworks’ existing promotion rules. Developers planning discounts should consult the current documentation, since policy details can change.
Seasonal-sale participation
- Valve says seasonal sales are open to all released games.
- Participation in a seasonal sale is not blocked by the discount cooldown, and joining the sale does not itself start a cooldown.
- A discount of 20% or more automatically triggers email notifications to players who have the game on their wishlist.
- Discounted games may also qualify for different Specials placements based on tags, game popularity, and what Steam recommends to a user.

Discount cooldowns
In general, a game cannot be discounted within 30 days of its release, a price increase in any currency, or the end of its launch discount. If the 30-day cooldown ends during a seasonal sale, the developer can manually enter a custom discount once the game becomes eligible. See Valve’s Steamworks discount rules for current details.
