Steam says an approved refund will be issued within one week of approval. That clock does not start when you buy a game or submit a request, and Valve does not publish one universal deadline for when a bank or payment provider will show the credit. Where your refund goes—and whether your purchase qualifies—depends on the purchase type, usage, timing, and available payment methods.
How long does a Steam refund take?
Valve’s Steam Refunds policy says: “You will be issued a full refund of your purchase within a week of approval.” The one-week period begins after Steam approves the request. It is not a promise of a refund within a week of purchase or submission.
Steam may return the money to the original payment method or credit it to your Steam Wallet. Valve does not specify a single posting interval for banks, card issuers, or other payment providers, so the date a credit appears outside Steam can vary.
How to check a delayed Steam refund
- Go to Steam Support to review the purchase and refund request status.
- Check whether the request is still under review or has been approved. Steam’s published one-week period applies after approval.
- Check the refund destination. It may be Steam Wallet or the original payment method; if the original method cannot receive refunds, Steam credits the Wallet instead.
- If Steam shows the refund as issued but you cannot see the credit, ask Steam Support about the transaction status. For a refund sent to an external payment method, contact that provider about its posting status; Steam’s policy does not establish a universal deadline for it to appear.

Does your Steam purchase qualify for a refund?
The familiar two-week and two-hour rule applies to most games and software, but not every Steam purchase. Steam’s policy, reported as last updated April 23, 2024, describes the following category-specific rules. Check the policy for the current terms and the conditions that apply to your purchase.

Yes. Steam says you can submit a request even if it falls outside the described rules, but that does not guarantee approval. Valve also notes that customers in some jurisdictions may have additional rights for faulty games. Local consumer law can affect an individual case, so the standard policy should not be treated as a complete statement of every country’s legal rights.
Steam says a refund request can be made for nearly any purchase and that the reason need not be a particular one, subject to the applicable timing, usage, and category conditions. Submit the request through Steam Support.
