Use Steam Remote Play Together when you want to play a supported local co-op or shared-screen game with friends who are elsewhere. Use a game’s native online multiplayer when you want its own online modes, matchmaking, competitive systems, or persistent servers. Remote Play Together streams the game from one host’s computer; it does not add online functionality to every Steam game.

What is the difference?

Steam Remote Play Together is a way to play a supported local multiplayer game over the internet. One person runs the game on their computer, and Steam streams its video and audio to the other players while sending their inputs back to the host. It can make a local co-op or split-screen game playable remotely even if the game has no built-in online mode.

Native online multiplayer is a mode implemented by the game itself. Depending on the title, it may use matchmaking and lobbies alongside peer-to-peer connections or game servers. Steamworks notes that dedicated servers are generally suited to highly competitive games and persistent worlds, while smaller groups may be served by matchmaking, lobbies, and peer-to-peer networking. These are developer guidelines, not a description of every game’s setup. Steamworks multiplayer guidance

Compare the two options

Decision point Remote Play Together Native online multiplayer
Game support The title must support Remote Play Together and have a suitable local multiplayer mode. Developers can disable the feature. The title must implement and offer an online mode.
Who runs the game One host owns, installs, and runs it; guests connect to the stream. The game’s own online system runs the session, using its chosen networking setup.
Ownership Only the host needs to own and install the game for this play path. Ownership requirements depend on the game and its online access rules.
Best suited to Playing a supported couch co-op, local multiplayer, or split-screen game with people who are not in the same room. Using a game’s online modes, matchmaking, competitive features, or persistent-world design.
Inputs Guests can use their own controllers; keyboard and mouse access can be shared. Input options depend on the game’s online implementation.
What affects play The host’s computer runs the game, and the session depends on streaming and the network connection between host and guests. Performance depends on the game’s networking and server or peer-to-peer route.
How to start Launch a compatible game and invite friends through Steam. Guests join through Steam or Steam Link paths described by Steam. Use the game’s built-in online, matchmaking, lobby, or server options.

Steam describes Remote Play Together as supporting up to four players, or more with fast connections, but this is general guidance—not a guaranteed player count for every game or household. Steam Remote Play overview

When should you choose Remote Play Together?

  • The game has local co-op, local multiplayer, or shared/split screen, and your group wants to play remotely.
  • One person can host the game on a computer that can run it while streaming.
  • You want guests to join without each owning and installing the game for this session.
  • Your group is comfortable with streamed play and has usable controllers or shared keyboard-and-mouse controls.

Steamworks says Remote Play Together is automatically enabled for games listed with Local Multiplayer, Local Co-op, or Shared/Split Screen capabilities, but developers can enable or disable it. Check the individual Steam listing for the game rather than assuming every local multiplayer title supports it. Steamworks Remote Play documentation

When is native online multiplayer the better fit?

  • The game’s online mode supports the way your group wants to play.
  • You need its own matchmaking, competitive rules, server features, or persistent-world behavior.
  • The game’s online setup better matches your group size, platforms, or network circumstances.

If both options are available, compare the specific game’s supported modes, player count, input options, and network setup. Steam’s general documentation does not establish which method will perform better for a particular title, connection route, or home network.

How to start a Remote Play Together session

  1. Check support. Look for Remote Play Together or a relevant local multiplayer capability on the game’s Steam page; developers control whether the feature is enabled.
  2. Launch the game on the host computer. The host runs the game while Steam streams it to the other players.
  3. Invite friends through Steam. Use the friends list or Steam overlay to invite them to the session.
  4. Set up inputs. Guests can use their own controllers. Steam also allows keyboard and mouse controls to be shared, though whether that suits the game depends on its control design.

Steam describes Remote Play as requiring a fast internet connection, but its cited overview does not give a universal minimum bandwidth or latency figure. A numeric threshold cannot guarantee a particular experience.

What to know about native online lobbies and networking

A lobby is a place for players to gather before a session; it does not, by itself, provide the networking that carries the game. The game needs a networking implementation, such as peer-to-peer connections or game servers. Steamworks multiplayer guidance

Steamworks says newer networking APIs may relay packets through Valve’s network or establish direct connections when appropriate. Steam Datagram Relay is described as protecting players’ IP addresses and often improving ping or connection quality, but that documentation does not guarantee an improvement for every game or route. Can you play a local co-op Steam game online with a friend?

Yes, if the game supports Remote Play Together and its local multiplayer mode works for your group. The host runs the game and streams it to guests; the game does not need its own online mode for this method. Check the title’s Steam listing because developers can disable Remote Play Together.
