The right Steam review data alternative depends on what you need: for direct access to public reviews, Steam’s documented IUserReviewsService.GetAppReviews is the baseline and the replacement for the deprecated store endpoint. Hosted APIs such as SteamApis and Steam Index may reduce integration work or combine reviews with other app metrics, but their documented capabilities differ and do not establish equivalent coverage.
Which route fits your Steam analytics task?
| Route | Best fit | What is documented |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Web API: GetAppReviews | Collecting public reviews directly from Steam, including filtered or paginated retrieval. | Review retrieval, cursor pagination, review filters, optional publisher authentication, and rate-limit behavior are described in the Steamworks API reference. |
| SteamApis | Using a hosted endpoint for reviews of a specific Steam app. | Its documentation describes cursor pagination and review fields; access requires an API key. |
| Steam Index API | Evaluating reviews alongside app metadata or player figures. | The API documentation lists app metadata, review summaries, live player figures, and a review-history endpoint. |
| SteamDB | Steam research and reference, not an assumed bulk review API. | Its FAQ includes a question about an API, but the available information does not establish a public API suitable for bulk Steam review analytics. |
A third-party service may reduce integration work; the official endpoint gives direct access to Steam’s review service. That is a distinction in the documented access patterns, not a measured comparison of speed, completeness, or reliability.
What Steam’s official review endpoint provides
Steamworks documents IUserReviewsService.GetAppReviews as an interface to get a dump of an application’s Steam reviews. Its endpoint is https://api.steampowered.com/IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews/v1/, and each request requires an appid. A Web API publisher key is optional; a key associated with the app provides a higher rate limit. Steam describes the endpoint in its API reference.
Filters and sorting
The service documents parameters for language, sorting and filtering, review type, purchase type, playtime, Steam Deck, and hardware. It also adds Funny sorting and date, playtime, Steam Deck, and hardware filters compared with the deprecated method. These filters make the official route useful when the analysis needs a defined slice of reviews rather than an undifferentiated feed.

Pagination, caching, and rate limits
Results are returned in cursor-paginated pages. Continue through the returned cursor according to the filter and collection goal. Steamworks says that Recent or Updated filters eventually return an empty list when paging through all reviews; Helpful uses a sliding date window and is designed to keep returning results. A collection job should account for that behavior rather than treating every sort mode as a finite archive.
Steamworks states that anonymous responses may be cached for up to 10 minutes and that requests without an associated key share a lower rate limit. A rate-limited call returns HTTP 429. The reference documents day_range as defaulting to 30, with a maximum of 365 and 0 meaning no limit. These are API specifications, not guarantees of a particular collection time or historical completeness.

Migrating from the deprecated store endpoint
The former store.steampowered.com/appreviews/<appid>?json=1 method is deprecated. Steamworks directs developers to GetAppReviews. The migration involves changing how parameters are passed and mapping string filter values to enums; the Web API also documents additional sorting and filters.
- Use the Web API endpoint
https://api.steampowered.com/IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews/v1/and supply the requiredappid. - Translate the old request’s filter values to the documented enum parameters and choose the equivalent sort, language, review type, and purchase type settings for the analysis.
- Read the returned cursor and request subsequent pages; handle HTTP 429 responses in accordance with the applicable rate limit.
- Choose a paging strategy for the selected sort/filter. In particular, distinguish the eventually empty Recent or Updated result sets from Helpful’s sliding date window.
Steam’s October 2 development announcement said the old endpoint was scheduled to be disabled on October 22 and directed developers to the Web API. The announcement says the new method “should basically return the same data,” while noting that requests change. Because the surfaced announcement does not establish a year, that date should not be treated as a current upcoming deadline. See the Steamworks Development announcement.

What the hosted alternatives document
SteamApis
SteamApis documents a review endpoint for a specific Steam app, paginated by cursor. Its listed review fields include review text, the author’s Steam ID, playtime at review time, vote counts, and timestamps. Requests require an API key in the x-api-key header. The documentation establishes those endpoint details, but not historical completeness, pricing, availability guarantees, or service quality.
Steam Index API
Steam Index’s documentation lists app metadata, review summaries, live player figures, and a review-history endpoint. That combination may be worth evaluating for work that needs app-level context in addition to review information. The documentation does not establish the history window, rate limits, pricing, or coverage, so confirm those points and the access terms before relying on it for a project.

SteamDB
SteamDB’s FAQ asks whether it has an API, but that alone does not establish a public API suitable for bulk review analytics. Treat SteamDB as a research/reference resource unless its current documentation confirms an API and terms that meet your particular collection requirements.

Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
- Fields and filters: Check whether the required language, review type, purchase type, playtime, Steam Deck, and hardware filters are available, along with the review fields your analysis needs.
- Collection behavior: Confirm pagination style, authentication, rate limits, caching, and how the endpoint behaves when paging through the chosen sort and filter.
- History: Establish whether the service supplies current reviews, incremental updates, or review history, and verify the actual history span rather than assuming an endpoint name means complete historical data.
- Scope: Separate app-level review data from metadata or live player figures; a service listing those metrics does not by itself establish review coverage across every app or period you need.
- Terms and operating constraints: Verify current pricing, access terms, coverage, rate limits, operational status, and any restrictions before adopting a hosted service.
When the official filters and cursor workflow meet the need, GetAppReviews avoids adding a separate hosted service to the collection path. When integration effort or combined metrics matter more, evaluate a hosted API against the fields, history, limits, and terms your project actually requires; the documented facts alone do not prove it is more complete or reliable.
