Publishers and developers choose each product’s discount under Valve’s Steamworks rules. If a game you bought later becomes cheaper, Valve generally lets you request a refund and buy it again at the sale price when the normal 14-day and under-two-hour conditions are met.
This guide explains when sales occur, why prices and discount labels differ, how the 30-day publisher cooldown works, and the correct refund route for games and other Steam purchases.

How Steam’s sale calendar works
The four major seasonal sales
Valve runs four major seasonal events each year:
- Spring Sale
- Summer Sale
- Autumn Sale
- Winter Sale
Valve’s currently published schedule lists the Winter Sale 2026 from December 17, 2026, through January 4, 2027, and the Spring Sale 2027 from March 18 through March 25, 2027. These dates can change, so verify the current Steamworks seasonal-sale schedule or the Steam store before relying on a future date.

Why a seasonal sale does not include every game
Seasonal sales are open to released games that meet Valve’s eligibility rules, but the publisher or developer controls whether its product joins and what price it sets. The calendar is therefore an opportunity window, not a promise that a particular title will be discounted. A game can remain at its regular price during a major sale.

Steam also runs themed events. Those events can have their own eligibility requirements, invitations or registration steps, so their presence on the store does not establish that every game can enter or that a discount will be offered.
How often can a Steam game be discounted?
The ordinary 30-day cooldown
Valve’s Steamworks discounting documentation generally prevents a product from being discounted within 30 days of another discount. This is a publisher-facing eligibility rule: it controls when a seller may schedule a promotion, not how often a customer is guaranteed to find a particular game on sale.
Seasonal sales are a narrow exception
Steam-wide seasonal-sale discounts are exempt from the discount-to-discount cooldown. A seasonal discount does not create a new 30-day wait, and a seasonal event can be exempt from a cooldown created by another discount. That exception does not override every other restriction.

Release dates and base-price increases still block a sale
A product cannot join a seasonal sale while it is within 30 days of release or within 30 days of a base-price increase in any currency. A price increase therefore matters even when the next event is a seasonal sale. The rule concerns the product’s eligibility; it does not mean that every title released or repriced will receive a discount after the 30 days pass.
Why a Steam price or discount label changed
Publishers control the base price and promotion
Steamworks gives publishers and developers controls for base prices and discounts. A base-price increase in any currency starts a 30-day discount cooldown. A base-price decrease does not start that cooldown. Valve also says a base price cannot be changed while a discount is active or while a discount is scheduled for the future. Those restrictions can affect both the timing and size of a later promotion.
Regional laws can change what the store displays
Valve notes that local laws can make discounts appear differently in different territories. One customer may see a strikethrough price and a prominent percentage while another region shows only the current price or a different presentation. A missing percentage label does not by itself prove that the lower price is unavailable. Open the game’s store page while signed into your own regional account and judge the current price and terms shown there.

Currency and regional pricing are not a global promise
Prices are set and displayed by region and currency. A publisher’s change in one currency can trigger the cooldown even if another region’s displayed amount looks unchanged. Do not infer that a discount percentage, old price or future timing in one territory applies identically to another.
Should you buy now or wait for a sale?
Valve’s rules do not promise that a specific game will be cheaper at the next seasonal event. Use the current store page and your own refund eligibility instead of treating the calendar as a guarantee.

I bought a game just before it went on sale. What should I do?
For a normal Steam game or software application, request a refund through Steam Support if the purchase was made within 14 days and the title has less than two hours of playtime. If Valve approves the request, it says the refund is issued within one week to Steam Wallet funds or to the original payment method when that method supports refunds.

Valve specifically states that requesting a refund for a title bought just before a sale and then immediately rebuying it at the sale price is not refund abuse: “We do not consider it abuse to request a refund on a title that was purchased just before a sale and then immediately rebuying that title for the sale price.” The ordinary eligibility conditions still apply; the statement is not an automatic approval.
Refund steps for a game or software application
- Open Steam Support from the Steam client or Steam website and sign in to the account that made the purchase.
- Choose the purchases or transaction-help area, then select the game that went on sale.
- Select the refund request option and provide the requested reason, such as the price changing soon after purchase.
- Choose Steam Wallet or the original payment method when that option is offered, then submit the request.
- Keep the game’s playtime below two hours and submit within 14 days whenever possible. Check the support confirmation for the decision and processing status.
If you are outside the normal limits
You can still submit a request outside the 14-day or two-hour limits. Valve says it will review such requests, but it does not promise approval. Explain the circumstances accurately; do not treat the seasonal-sale statement as an exception to the normal limits.

Once the refund is completed, you may purchase the title again at its current sale price. A refund removes the original license according to Steam’s processing, so you should not assume you can continue playing indefinitely while waiting for the lower-priced purchase.

Refund rules depend on what you bought
The familiar two-week/two-hour rule is for Steam games and software applications. Other transactions have separate conditions.

Common questions about Steam sale timing and refunds
How often do Steam games go on sale?
There is no universal frequency for an individual game. The four seasonal events recur annually, while publishers choose participation under the 30-day discount rules and other eligibility restrictions. A title may appear in several events, one event or none.
Can I buy a game again after refunding it?
Yes. If Steam approves the refund, you can purchase the game again, including at a current sale price. The refund request and the repurchase are separate transactions, and the original purchase must still meet the applicable policy conditions.
Does Steam refund a game bought from a key site?
No. Valve says it cannot refund third-party purchases such as CD keys. Contact the seller for any remedy; Steam’s game-refund process applies to purchases made through Steam.
Why is the sale percentage missing in my country?
Local laws and regional presentation can change whether Steam shows a strikethrough price or prominent percentage. Compare the current amount and terms on your own store page rather than relying on a label seen in another territory.
A practical checklist before you click Buy
- Confirm the live regional price on the game’s store page.
- Check whether the product is a game/software license or another category with different refund rules.
- If you may request a refund, track both the 14-day purchase window and two-hour playtime limit.
- Remember that a seasonal-sale date does not guarantee this game will be discounted.
- If the game was recently released or its base price increased in any currency, a 30-day eligibility block may apply.
- For a post-purchase price drop, use Steam Support rather than buying a third-party key or wallet card that Valve cannot refund.
Valve describes the purpose of its discounting rules as increasing pricing transparency for customers. In practice, the safest comparison is the price and terms displayed for your own account at the moment you buy, combined with the refund limits that apply to that specific transaction.
