Where should you buy PC games? Compare the same game and edition in your region at the time you plan to buy, then weigh refund eligibility and which storefront you prefer. Neither Steam nor the Epic Games Store is a universal sale winner: a store-wide promotion does not show whether a particular game is cheaper for you.
Which store is cheaper for the same game?
There is no supported platform-wide answer. A meaningful comparison requires the same game or edition, the same region and currency, and the total shown to you at checkout. Sale banners alone do not establish the lower price, and a discount on one storefront does not mean every game there is discounted.
- Open the product pages for the exact same game and edition on both stores.
- Check the prices in your own region and currency, including any checkout-level offer available to you.
- Compare the final totals, then check each listing’s refund eligibility before purchasing.
Prices and promotions change. On October 7, 2026, the Epic Games Store page reviewed showed an Epic Savings window of September 24–October 8, but its regional rendering displayed NZD prices. That snapshot is not a guide to prices in other regions; check the live listing where you buy (Epic Games Store).

What sales are happening now?
As of October 7, 2026, Steam’s Autumn Sale runs October 1–8, 2026, according to Valve’s seasonal sale schedule. Valve documents four Steam-wide seasonal sale events per year, but individual games set their own discounts and are not required to participate (Valve’s Steamworks seasonal sales schedule).
Epic’s page displayed an Epic Savings promotion running September 24–October 8, 2026, in the regional view checked on October 7. Because that view showed NZD prices, it cannot establish what a buyer elsewhere will pay (Epic Games Store). Check each store’s current page and the specific title listing before buying; event dates do not guarantee a discount on a particular game.

How do Steam and Epic refunds compare?
Both storefronts offer a route to request a refund for many game purchases, and both describe a way to buy at a lower sale price after an eligible recent purchase. Their standard rules and eligibility labels are not identical.
| Question | Steam | Epic Games Store |
|---|---|---|
| General PC game window | Generally within 14 days of purchase and under two hours of playtime. Valve’s policy page says exceptions and additional local rights may apply. | For PC and Mac products marked refundable or self-refundable, within 14 days and under two hours of runtime. Products may instead be marked non-refundable. |
| If the game goes on sale soon after purchase | Valve says it does not refund the price difference. If the purchase qualifies, you can request a refund and buy the game again at the sale price. | Epic says an eligible recent purchase that goes on sale may be refunded in full and repurchased at the sale price. |
| Other eligibility details | Separate rules apply to categories such as DLC, bundles, subscriptions and in-game purchases. | Some subscriptions, in-app purchases, consumables, virtual currency and gifts are generally not refundable; check the product’s label and the policy. |
Steam’s policy is dated April 23, 2024; Valve says requesting a refund on a title bought just before a sale and immediately rebought at the sale price is not abuse (Steam Refunds). Epic’s live policy says an eligible recent purchase that goes on sale can be refunded in full and repurchased (Epic Games Store Refund Policy). A request is not a promise of approval: read the applicable policy and check eligibility in your account.

Which storefront should you choose?
- Choose the lower verified price when the same edition is available on both stores and the regional checkout totals differ.
- Consider refund terms if you may change your mind or expect a sale soon. Check the exact purchase category and product label rather than assuming the general game rule covers it.
- Choose the store you prefer when the price and refund terms are comparable. A sale event alone does not settle the decision.
Neither the reviewed official materials nor the current sale snapshots establish a reliable average discount or a store-wide price winner. For a specific purchase, the product listing and your regional checkout total are more useful than a general claim about which storefront is cheaper.
