No: Steam did not tell every PirateFi player to reset their PC. A reproduced Steam email strongly encouraged people who launched the game while suspect builds were active to run a full-system scan and check for unexpected software; it said they may also consider fully reformatting the operating system. PirateFi was free-to-play, and the reported risk concerned players who launched it—not buyers or everyone who merely downloaded it.
What happened with PirateFi?
PirateFi was a free-to-play survival game on Steam. Steam’s reproduced email notice said the developer’s account had uploaded builds containing suspected malware, that those builds had been removed, and that people who launched the game while the builds were active should treat their computers as potentially exposed. The Guyana National Computer Incident Response Team (CIRT) reported the game was available from February 6 to February 12, 2025. Steam’s reproduced notice · Guyana National CIRT alert
The CIRT estimated that up to 1,500 users were at risk. That is an exposure estimate, not a count of confirmed infections. Kaspersky says the exact number of victims is unknown and relays estimates from third-party analytics services. Kaspersky’s incident account
What was the reported malware capable of doing?
Kaspersky identified a detection as Trojan.Win32.Lazzzy.gen and described a Windows payload disguised as Howard.exe. Its account says the file unpacked in the user’s AppData/Temp directory when the game launched and could steal browser cookies, potentially enabling access to online accounts. Kaspersky also reported user accounts of password changes and unauthorized transactions; those reports do not establish that every exposed player was affected.

The CIRT alert calls the threat the Vidar infostealer and says stolen information could include credentials, session cookies, and cryptocurrency wallet information. It describes Pirate.exe deploying Howard.exe through an InnoSetup installer. The Vidar label is the CIRT’s attribution: Steam’s notice said only “suspected malware,” and Kaspersky’s account does not independently name that malware family.
Do you need to reset or reformat your PC?
Steam’s reproduced notice did not order a reset. It said: “The builds containing the suspected malware have been removed from Steam, but we strongly encourage you to run a full-system scan using an anti-virus product that you trust or use regularly, and inspect your system for unexpected or newly installed software. You may also consider fully reformatting your operating system to ensure that no malicious software remains on your machine.”

In other words, scanning and inspection were strongly encouraged; a full operating-system reformat was an additional option to consider, not a universal requirement. A reformat is the more disruptive response, while a scan and review of new software are the steps Steam specifically urged. The notice does not provide a threshold that says when a scan is enough or when a reformat is necessary.

If you launched the game during the reported availability window
- Run a full-system scan with an antivirus product you trust or already use regularly, as Steam advised.
- Inspect installed software for anything unexpected or newly installed. Steam Support cautions that purported malware-removal tools can themselves be malicious; research tools carefully and download them only from official, trusted websites. Steam Support: malware and suspicious programs
- Consider a full OS reformat if you want the more comprehensive reset Steam mentioned, weighing the disruption of reinstalling and restoring your system. The reproduced notice presents this as an option; it does not say that every player must do it.
If you only downloaded PirateFi
The reproduced warning specifically addressed users who launched the game while suspect builds were active. It does not say that downloading without launching caused exposure. If you are unsure whether the game ran, treat that uncertainty cautiously and follow the scan-and-inspect advice.

If an account shows suspicious activity
Unexpected logins, password changes, or transactions warrant prompt account-security action, but they are not by themselves proof of how an account was compromised. The CIRT recommends changing compromised passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication where available, monitoring financial and personal accounts, and reviewing installed applications for unknown software.
Steam Support advises securing the computer and associated email before changing a Steam password or recovering an account: scan for viruses, keyloggers, spyware, or other malicious code first; change the email password; then recover the Steam account once the computer and email are secure.
