Games released in 2024 accounted for 15% of Steam users’ total playtime that year, according to Valve’s Steam Replay 2024 figures reported by PC Gamer. Most reported playtime went to older releases—but the statistic measures hours, not how many people tried new games or how well those games sold.
How Steam playtime was divided by game age in 2024
PC Gamer reported the following shares from Steam Replay 2024. The age groups are kept as reported; the percentages total 99%, so they should not be treated as a precise, complete 100% partition.

That distribution means the two older-release groups together made up most reported playtime. It does not mean most Steam users ignored every 2024 release: someone could launch a new game and still spend the bulk of their annual hours in older titles.

The 2024 share was higher than 2023’s reported figure and lower than 2022’s. That short comparison does not establish a lasting trend; the reporting provides no statistical uncertainty or detailed method for how the platform-wide figures were calculated.
What the playtime statistic does—and does not—show
The 15% figure describes a share of aggregate playtime. On its own, it cannot tell you:

- What percentage of Steam users bought, launched, or completed a 2024 game.
- How much money new releases made, or whether they were commercial or critical successes.
- What fraction of the games available on Steam attracted players.
PC Gamer points to long-running service games and Steam’s broad back catalog as possible context for the large share of time spent in older titles. Those are plausible explanations, not causes established by the reported figures. The coverage does not specify the account population, calculation method, or how release dates were assigned.
