Steam is a natural fit if you prefer its library and features; Battle.net may suit you if you already use Blizzard’s desktop app and social features. Your choice affects where you own and organize the game, while cross-progression for supported games is tied to your Activision account.
What differs between Steam and Battle.net?
For Call of Duty, the practical decision is about storefront ownership, library organization, and the launcher features you prefer—not a proven difference in game performance. Steam’s Call of Duty listing includes Steam achievements and says an Activision account is required: Steam Call of Duty listing. Battle.net describes its desktop app as a place to launch games, follow news and updates, and message friends: Battle.net desktop app.

Does Call of Duty progress transfer between Steam and Battle.net?
For games that support cross-progression, Activision says progress is stored on your Activision account rather than your platform account. Its guidance says: “Because game progression in crossplay-enabled games is stored on your Activision account, you can play on any platform you have linked to your account, and your progression carries over.” Read Activision’s account management guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- INTRODUCING A NEW ERA OF BLACK OPS: Call of Duty: Black Ops III takes place in a dark, gritty future where a new breed of Black Ops soldier emerges and the lines are blurred between our own humanity and the cutting-edge military robotics that define the future of combat.
- A CALL OF DUTY CAMPAIGN UNLIKE ANYTHING BEFORE IT: Treyarch elevates the Call of Duty social gaming experience by delivering up to four player campaign co-op, using the same battle-tested network infrastructure and social systems that support its world-class Multiplayer and Zombies game modes.
- PREPARE FOR A LEVELED-UP MULTIPLAYER: With Black Ops III, Treyarch premieres a new momentum-based chained-movement system, allowing players to fluidly move through the environment with finesse, using controlled thrust jumps, slides, and mantling abilities in a multitude of combinations, all while maintaining complete control over your weapon at all times.
- FIGHT THE UNDEAD IN AN ALL-NEW HORROR STORY: No Treyarch title would be complete without its signature Zombies offering - a full-game experience with its own distinct storyline right out of the box. Black Ops III Zombies is the most immersive and ambitious Call of Duty Zombies to date, with a full XP-based progression system for players that adds depth and re-playability to the engaging gameplay Zombies fans have come to expect.
Steam and Blizzard accounts can be linked to an Activision account. To carry supported progress between them, use the same Activision account on both platforms. Linking a platform to a different Activision account will not transfer progress from the first account. Cross-progression depends on the specific game supporting it.
Does switching launchers mean you have to reinstall?
Do not assume that a game installation will carry over unchanged when you move between launchers. Install organization can also vary by title. In a documented change for Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III, Steam moved the games out of the shared Call of Duty HQ library entry into separate game entries. The change required reinstalling those affected games, while saves, progression, and achievements transferred automatically. Steam Support’s notice describes those titles specifically; it does not establish what happens for every Call of Duty game: Steam Support notice about the library change.

Before switching, check the target game’s current storefront listing and support information for its install and library requirements. Also confirm that the game is owned on the storefront where you intend to play.
Check storage requirements for the specific game
Install size is title- and listing-specific, and can change as games are updated. At the time accessed in 2026, Steam’s Call of Duty listing specified an SSD and 161 GB of available space at launch. Treat that as the requirement shown for that listing—not a current, universal size for every Call of Duty title. Check the target game’s latest listing and leave additional room for updates.

Check ownership and included content before changing stores
Progress carrying over through an Activision account does not establish that a purchase on Steam grants access on Battle.net, or vice versa. Before switching storefronts, verify that you own the game on the destination platform and check which content that purchase includes.
