Start by identifying whether the game alone is failing or Windows itself is crashing. Then check the game’s update and official system requirements, investigate drivers or background-software conflicts, and use the error message to choose the next step. Avoid changing several settings at once: a single-game issue and a Windows stop-code restart call for different troubleshooting.
First, identify what is actually failing
Note what happens and when. Does the game close to the desktop, freeze, stutter while remaining open, show visual corruption, or cause the whole PC to restart? Record the game title, your Windows version, any exact error text or stop code, and whether the problem began after a game, graphics-driver, or Windows update.
This distinction matters: a game that closes without affecting Windows points first toward that game or its compatibility, while a stop-code restart needs system-level troubleshooting. Stuttering alone does not prove that the graphics card is faulty.
Check the game update and its official requirements
- Install any available update through the game’s publisher or the platform where you installed it.
- Compare your PC’s hardware and operating-system details with the game’s official minimum and recommended system requirements. Use the requirements for that specific title; there is no universal hardware threshold for newly installed PC games.
- If only this game is affected, check the publisher’s support information for known issues and recommended steps before changing Windows settings.
If the PC falls below a stated requirement, that may explain poor performance or failure to launch; if it meets the requirements, continue with the symptom-specific checks below rather than assuming that a component needs replacing.

Check compatibility and graphics drivers
If the problem began after a Windows upgrade
Update the game first. If it still fails, run Windows’ Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Microsoft notes that older apps may be affected by changes in Windows architecture, security features, or system requirements. See Microsoft’s guidance for making older apps compatible with Windows.
If the problem began after a display-driver update
Use the supported driver route for your PC or graphics adapter’s manufacturer. If the issue appeared immediately after a driver update, rolling back that display driver may be relevant; otherwise, do not assume that changing it will fix the game. Avoid generic driver-updater applications, which are not needed for this diagnostic sequence.

Test for a background-software conflict with a clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs, which can help identify background software that conflicts with a game. Microsoft provides the procedure for performing a clean boot in Windows.
- Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions for your Windows version, and record any services or startup items you disable.
- Restart Windows and test the game under the same conditions that caused the problem.
- If the game works, re-enable services or startup items systematically, testing between changes, until you identify the conflict.
- Restore normal startup when the test is complete, using Microsoft’s instructions.
Clean boot changes can temporarily reduce functionality. Change only the items described in the instructions, and restore the usual startup configuration after testing.

Use DxDiag for DirectX and driver details
DxDiag reports DirectX components and drivers, which can help when a game displays a DirectX-related error. To open it, press the Windows key, type dxdiag, and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Check the reported information rather than installing a runtime package based only on a guess.
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, DirectX 11.3 and DirectX 12 are included with Windows and are updated through Windows Update; they do not have a separate standalone package. Older games can have specific legacy-runtime needs—for example, an error naming d3dx9_35.dll—but that is not a reason to install arbitrary runtime bundles. Follow Microsoft’s documented steps at How to install the latest version of DirectX.

If Windows restarts with a stop code
A stop-code restart is a Windows-level problem, not just a game crash. Microsoft says unexpected restarts can relate to hardware, a driver, or software. Follow its stop-code troubleshooting guidance, including these checks:
- Look in Device Manager for devices marked with a warning, then update or disable a problematic device as appropriate.
- Install available Windows updates.
- Check free disk space. Microsoft gives 10%–15% free space as a general target for stop-code troubleshooting, while noting that the amount needed varies by configuration. This is not a universal gaming requirement or a guaranteed stutter fix.
Record the stop code and any recent driver or system changes. If the restart repeats, troubleshoot the Windows issue before treating it as a game-only problem.

Choose the next step by the scope of the problem
| What you observe | Where to focus |
|---|---|
| One game crashes or stutters; Windows remains stable | That game’s update, official requirements, compatibility, error message, and publisher support. |
| The issue began after a graphics-driver update | The supported driver source for the PC or adapter, and whether rolling back the affected display driver is appropriate. |
| The game works in a clean boot | Re-enable startup items and services systematically to find the conflicting background software. |
| Windows restarts, shows a stop code, or multiple games fail | Shared drivers, Windows updates, flagged devices, available disk space, and system-level diagnostics. |
Consider repair or component replacement only when a repeatable test or other evidence identifies a specific fault or limitation. If Windows stays stable and other demanding games work normally, concentrate on the affected title rather than assuming the PC needs new hardware.
