Steam is the best default for most PC players who want one store with the most fully documented organization and family-management tools. Choose GOG when DRM-free ownership, downloadable installers, and offline-capable single-player play matter most. Choose GOG GALAXY when you want to organize games purchased from several PC stores in one interface. The Epic Games Store is a worthwhile additional storefront—especially when a particular game or promotion is available there—but its official documentation describes fewer library-organization features than Steam or GOG GALAXY.
Quick comparison
| What matters to you | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Deep organization inside one store | Steam | Custom shelves, drag-and-drop collections, dynamic collections based on store tags and filters, sorting, hiding, and featuring controls. |
| DRM-free ownership and offline single-player use | GOG | GOG says games released on its store cannot include DRM or copy protection and should work without GALAXY or an internet connection, subject to online-only features. |
| One view of libraries bought from several PC stores | GOG GALAXY | It can import games from GOG, Epic Games, and other platforms, then show playtime, achievements, friends, tags, filters, sorting, custom views, artwork, and editable metadata. |
| A game or promotion available only on Epic | Epic Games Store | You can add games to themed collections. Use a separate aggregator if you need a complete multi-store view. |
| Family controls and shared access | Steam | Steam Families supports up to six family members, eligible shared games, separate saves and achievements, simultaneous play in supported cases, and parental controls. |
There is no single winner on every axis. A practical setup is often a combination: buy where the game, price, or ownership model suits you, then use Steam’s library tools for a Steam-heavy collection or GOG GALAXY as the cross-store organizer.

How the three stores differ in practice
Steam is a storefront and a powerful native library
Steam’s New Steam Library is designed around a home page rather than a bare alphabetical list. It can surface updates, recently played games, and friends’ activity, while custom shelves let you place the categories you care about directly on that home screen.

Ordinary collections are manual: you create a collection and drag games into it. Dynamic collections are rule-based: they automatically gather games using Steam store tags and filters. You can therefore maintain a hand-curated shelf such as “Play with friends” alongside an automatically updated shelf for a genre, controller requirement, or other available filter.

Steam also documents controls to sort, hide, and feature games. Hiding is useful for titles you own but do not want in the normal browsing view; featuring lets a smaller set stay prominent. Together, these controls make Steam the strongest documented option when most of your purchases live in one storefront.
GOG separates the store from its cross-platform organizer
GOG’s store is aimed at games that can be used without mandatory digital-rights management. GOG GALAXY is the optional desktop organizer. Its product materials describe importing games from GOG, Epic Games, and other platforms into one library, then combining owned games, playtime, achievements, and friends in one interface.
GALAXY’s organization is more hands-on than a simple imported list. It supports filtering, sorting, tags, custom views, custom artwork, and manual metadata editing. That lets you correct a title, add your own categories, or make a view such as “installed,” “short games,” or “unfinished” even when the original store’s metadata is inconsistent.

Epic provides basic themed collections
Epic Games Store support documents a library containing games and software purchased from Epic and lets you add a game to a collection based on a theme you choose. That covers straightforward lists such as “Co-op,” “Backlog,” or “Horror.”
The reviewed Epic documentation does not describe the same breadth of dynamic tag filtering, custom shelves, or cross-platform import that Steam and GOG GALAXY document. That does not make Epic’s library unusable; it means the documented feature set is narrower for people trying to manage a large or multi-store collection.
Library organization: which launcher handles a large backlog best?
Steam: best for rule-based and visual organization
- Create a manual collection: in your Library, create a collection, then drag games into it. Use manual collections for personal groupings that store tags cannot express.
- Create a dynamic collection: choose the available store tags and filters that describe the games you want. Steam will add matching titles automatically as your library changes.
- Build the home screen: place important collections on custom shelves so your frequently played, newly acquired, or currently active groups appear without searching.
- Clean up the view: sort games by the available fields, hide titles you do not want in normal browsing, and feature the games you want to keep visible.
The important distinction is maintenance. Manual collections require you to remember new purchases; dynamic collections continue to update when a title matches the rules. A hybrid setup—dynamic shelves for broad categories and manual collections for immediate priorities—avoids both constant upkeep and overly broad filters.
GOG GALAXY: best when metadata needs personal curation
- Connect your platforms: use GALAXY’s integrations to import games from GOG, Epic, and other supported platforms.
- Review the imported library: check that duplicate entries, editions, and uninstalled games are represented the way you expect.
- Filter and sort: narrow the list by the available platform, installation state, genre, or other metadata, then sort it for the task at hand.
- Add tags and views: create personal tags and custom views for backlogs, multiplayer groups, unfinished campaigns, or games that work well on a particular device.
- Correct presentation: apply custom artwork and edit metadata manually when an imported title is mislabeled or visually inconsistent.
GALAXY is particularly useful if your purchases are spread across stores. It does not turn those stores into one ownership system: launching an imported game may still require its original launcher, account, or online service. The benefit is a unified catalog and a consistent way to search it.

Epic: adequate for themed lists
- Open the Epic library and choose the option to add a game to a collection.
- Name the collection by a stable purpose, such as “Backlog,” “Local co-op,” or “Currently playing.”
- Use a small number of durable themes rather than making a separate collection for every temporary mood.
If your Epic library becomes one part of a larger collection, import or otherwise track it in a cross-platform organizer instead of expecting Epic’s own library to provide a complete view of other stores.
Cross-platform aggregation: what it can and cannot solve
GOG GALAXY is the clearest documented choice for aggregation. Its materials specifically describe importing games from GOG, Epic, and other platforms, then combining games, playtime, achievements, and friends. This addresses the most common multi-launcher problem: remembering which store owns a game and where it is installed.
An aggregator does not merge licenses. Your Epic purchase remains an Epic purchase, and a game imported into GALAXY may still open through its original launcher. Achievements, cloud saves, multiplayer services, patches, refunds, and account security remain governed by the source platform and the publisher. Treat the unified library as an index and launch surface, not as a replacement for the accounts that own the games.
Imported information can also vary by platform. If a title appears twice, has several editions, or carries incomplete artwork, use GALAXY’s tags, custom artwork, and manual metadata editing to make the entry readable. Keep a simple “owned on” tag if you regularly forget which account contains a license.
Ownership, DRM, and offline access
What GOG’s DRM-free promise means
GOG’s developer documentation states: “GOG’s ‘DRM-Free’ philosophy means that games released on GOG can’t have any DRM/copy protection and should work in all possible scenarios, regardless of the result of GOG GALAXY authentication, GOG GALAXY client presence or Internet connection availability.”
For a buyer, that means a GOG release is intended to run without the GALAXY client and without an internet check for the game’s copy protection. You can also download backup installers from your GOG account and retain them for reinstalling later. This is most valuable for single-player games where the core experience is local.
Offline does not mean every feature works offline
GOG separately notes that online-only features still require connectivity. Multiplayer, friends, leaderboards, and similar services cannot function without the network even when the underlying game launches offline. Some games also have their own account, server, or third-party requirements; check the individual product’s requirements before assuming every mode is local.

Steam and Epic ownership is launcher-centered
Steam and Epic purchases are normally managed through their respective accounts and clients. Their libraries provide convenient installation, patching, cloud, and social features, but access depends more heavily on the storefront account and its services than a DRM-free offline installer does. Offline modes can exist for particular games or clients, yet availability is title-specific rather than a blanket store promise.

For preservation or travel, compare the exact release you plan to buy: whether offline launch is documented, whether installers can be downloaded independently, and whether multiplayer or authentication is required. “Available offline” should describe the game’s documented behavior, not merely the absence of a launcher window after the first install.
Family sharing and parental controls
Steam Families
Steam’s official Families FAQ says a Steam Family can contain up to six family members. Eligible games owned by family members can be shared, while each person keeps personal saved games and achievements. Shared games retain Workshop access, and simultaneous play is supported in cases where the family owns the required copies and the game’s sharing rules allow it.
Steam Families also includes parental controls with playtime limits and reports. That makes Steam the strongest documented choice here for households that need both shared access and supervision tools.
“Eligible” matters. Not every game necessarily supports family sharing, and a shared library does not erase publisher restrictions, regional rules, or the need for separate accounts. Set up the family group, check a title’s eligibility, and test the intended play arrangement before relying on one copy for everyone.
GOG and Epic
The material reviewed for this comparison does not establish an equivalent, store-wide family-sharing and parental-control system for GOG, GOG GALAXY, or Epic. That is an evidence limitation, not proof that no account or operating-system controls exist. If household sharing is decisive, verify the current rules for the specific platform, game, and region before purchasing.
Discovery and catalog breadth
Steam’s organization and discovery are closely connected: store tags feed dynamic collections, and the library home can surface updates, recently played games, and friends’ activity. That makes it easier to turn browsing signals into a maintained backlog without leaving the platform.

GOG’s strength is different. Its DRM-free positioning and GALAXY’s metadata tools help you manage what you already own, while custom views and manual editing make a mixed or older catalog easier to navigate.
Epic’s official support material confirms themed collections but does not provide comparable documentation for dynamic tag-driven organization or cross-store import. It remains useful when the desired title is sold there. Avoid treating store slogans or changing promotions as a stable catalog-size comparison: no consistently measured, current catalog total for all three stores is established here.

Family access is the deciding factor
Start with Steam’s documented Steam Families features. Check game eligibility and the number of copies needed for simultaneous play rather than assuming every shared title behaves identically.
A practical multi-launcher organization system
- Pick one source of truth: use Steam if most games are there; otherwise use GOG GALAXY for the combined index.
- Define a few durable tags: examples include “backlog,” “playing,” “finished,” “multiplayer,” “short,” and “needs controller.” Avoid tags that describe temporary moods you will never maintain.
- Separate ownership from status: use one field or tag for the platform that owns the license and another for whether you have installed, started, or finished the game.
- Keep active views small: a current-play shelf, a backlog view, and a multiplayer view are easier to use than dozens of near-identical collections.
- Review imported entries: merge or relabel duplicates, fix artwork, and note editions that have different launchers or content.
- Archive completed games: move finished titles into a completed view rather than deleting them, so your purchase history remains searchable.
- Recheck access before travel: install updates, sign in where required, and test offline launch for games you expect to play without a connection.
Common mistakes and fixes
Assuming an imported game is owned by the organizer
Fix: record the original store and account. Aggregation changes visibility, not the license.
Putting every game into manual collections
Fix: use dynamic Steam collections for broad, tag-based groups and reserve manual lists for personal priorities.
Confusing DRM-free with completely offline multiplayer
Fix: distinguish copy-protection-free launching from online services. Multiplayer, friends, and leaderboards still need a connection.
Relying on one shared copy for every family member
Fix: check Steam Families eligibility and simultaneous-play rules for each game.
Using store catalog claims as precise market statistics
Fix: treat the “4,500+ games” GOG GALAXY description as undated marketing language, and do not infer a ranking from it.
Final recommendation
For most readers, start with Steam: it offers the most complete documented native organization and the clearest family controls. Pick GOG when DRM-free, offline-capable single-player ownership is the priority. Add GOG GALAXY when your collection spans several stores and you need one searchable, taggable view. Keep Epic Games Store in the mix for games and promotions that are available there, using themed collections or a separate aggregator to prevent a fragmented backlog.
