You can send Steam value as a digital gift card through Steam, or redeem an existing physical card or Wallet code on the account you want to fund. Digital gifts are credited to the recipient’s Wallet after acceptance; codes convert to the currency of the Wallet where they are redeemed. Steam is winding down retail cards, so existing physical cards remain usable, but new stock is not being replenished.

How to buy and send a digital gift card
- Open Steam’s digital gift-card page and select an amount.
- Choose the Steam friend who will receive it. If a country-specific restriction applies, Steam displays it during the selection or checkout flow.
- Complete payment. You cannot pay for a digital gift card with your existing Steam Wallet balance.
- The recipient accepts the gift to add its value to their Steam Wallet. If they decline, Steam refunds the sender: to the original payment method when supported, or otherwise to the sender’s Wallet.
For a gift sent across countries, Steam converts the value into the recipient’s currency. In rare cases, accepting a digital card can trigger a Community Market restriction; Steam shows a warning before acceptance when that applies. Steam Gift Cards

How to redeem a Steam Wallet code
Sign in to the Steam account you intend to fund, then use Steam’s Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code page. Steam states that you must be logged in to redeem a code. The available source confirms the sign-in requirement and eligible uses, but does not establish a complete button-by-button sequence; follow the instructions shown by Steam on the redemption page.

What Steam Wallet funds can buy
- Games and software: Use Wallet funds for eligible Steam purchases.

Wallet balance cannot be transferred to another account
Steam Wallet credit is not a person-to-person payment method. You cannot trade, gift, move, or automatically add your existing balance to someone else’s account. Use Steam’s digital gift-card feature to send value instead. Steam also warns that its trading interface does not support money transfers, including Wallet credit. Before you give or redeem a card
- For a digital gift, confirm that the recipient is selectable and checkout allows the purchase; country restrictions can apply.
- For a physical card, do not assume a particular shop still has stock. Steam expects retail stock to sell through by the end of 2026 and says it will not replenish it.
- Redeem a code only while signed in to the intended recipient’s account. Once redeemed, its value becomes Wallet funds in that account’s currency.
- Never share a card code or rely on a trade to transfer Wallet credit; Steam does not support Wallet transfers between accounts.
