“Steam was unable to sync your files” means Steam Cloud did not finish exchanging your game’s local files with the copy stored online. It is a synchronization failure, not proof that your save is corrupted. Do not launch a game whose progress matters until you know which copy is current and have backed up any local save you can access.

If Steam presents a conflict, compare the local and cloud modification times, consider which computer and session you used most recently, and choose download, upload, or cancel deliberately. The wrong choice can replace newer progress with an older copy.

What the Steam sync warning actually means

Steam’s client message says: “Steam was unable to sync your files for %game% with the Steam Cloud.” It then warns: “If you have launched this application from another computer, your application settings and/or progress may not be in sync with what is stored in the Cloud. If you launch the application now, you may lose those changes or progress.” The wording is reproduced in Steam’s client language strings (Steam client English strings).

In practical terms, Steam has not completed the exchange between files on your computer and the cloud copy associated with your account. The failure may be temporary, such as a network or client-session problem, or it may involve a file Steam cannot read or write. The message alone does not establish that the save is damaged.

After a failed sync, Steam can detect two versions of a game’s files. A conflict dialog may show modification times and offer three actions: download the cloud files to this computer, upload this computer’s files to the cloud, or cancel. Those actions are not interchangeable: one can overwrite the other version.

What to do before launching the game

  1. Stop at the warning. If the save is valuable, do not select “launch anyway” simply to see whether the game opens. Launching can create newer local files or make it harder to identify which progress was current.
  2. Keep Steam connected. Confirm that Steam is not in Offline Mode and that ordinary web pages or another known service work on the same connection. Avoid resolving a conflict while a connection is repeatedly dropping.
  3. Exit and reopen Steam completely. Use Steam’s exit command, wait for the client to close, then start it again and allow the sync to retry. A full client restart is different from merely closing a game window.
  4. Preserve a local copy. Before choosing a conflict action, copy any accessible save folder to a separate location, such as another internal disk or an external USB drive. A backup is protection, not a repair; it gives you a way back if the wrong version is selected.

For a conservative procedure and additional checks, see iTechGuides’ safe troubleshooting guide. Its recommendations should be applied after making a backup when possible.

How to choose between local and cloud files

When Steam displays a conflict, treat the dialog as a decision about which copy should become authoritative. Use more than the timestamp: a clock can be wrong, and a file can be newer without containing the progress you want.

Evidence to compare Questions to ask Why it matters
Modification time Which copy was changed later, and is the time plausible for your play session? A later time often indicates newer progress, but it is not conclusive by itself.
Device and session Did you last play on this computer or another one? Was Steam online then? The most recently used device may contain the intended save.
Save behavior Does the local save folder contain the expected files, and can a copy be opened or recognized by the game? An intact, recognizable save is safer to preserve than an unexplained file set.
Manual backup Have you copied both versions, or at least the local files, somewhere safe? A backup lets you recover if your first choice is wrong.

Download cloud files to this computer

Choose the download option when the cloud copy is the trusted latest version—for example, you played on another computer more recently, and the cloud timestamp matches that session. Steam will replace or update the local synchronized files with what is stored online. Do this only after saving any local files you may need.

Upload local files to the cloud

Choose upload when the local copy is newer, intact, and represents the progress you want to keep. This makes the computer’s files the version available to other devices. Verify the local folder first; uploading an old or incomplete set can overwrite a good cloud copy.

Cancel and investigate

Cancel when the timestamps are unclear, the two versions represent different play sessions, or you cannot make a backup. Leaving the conflict unresolved is safer than guessing. You can restart Steam, inspect the files, and return to the choice once you have better evidence.

Fixes to try in a safe order

1. Check Steam, account, and network state

Confirm that Steam shows you as online, not in Offline Mode, and that you are signed into the account that owns the game. If several games report the same failure at once, a client, account, network, or Steam service condition is more likely than simultaneous damage to every save. Retry after the connection is stable rather than repeatedly forcing launches.

2. Restart the Steam client and retry

Exit Steam fully, reopen it, and wait for the library and cloud status to settle before starting the game. If the warning disappears after a clean restart, no file replacement may have been necessary. If it returns, continue with the checks below instead of repeatedly accepting the same conflict.

3. Confirm that Cloud is enabled for the game

Open the game’s Properties from your Steam Library and inspect the General settings for the Steam Cloud option. Steam’s wording and layout can change, so read the current checkbox or toggle rather than assuming a setting from an older guide. Also check Steam’s global Cloud setting in the client settings. Do not disable synchronization as a first response when the save has not been backed up.

4. Check whether files are readable and writable

A sync can fail if Steam cannot read the save, cannot write to its destination, or encounters a file locked by another process. Close the game and any launcher or mod tool that may still have the save open. Check that the drive containing the game and save has free space. If the save directory is protected by operating-system permissions, use the account that owns the files and correct the folder’s access rather than deleting files at random.

5. Review security software and controlled-folder protection

Antivirus, ransomware protection, or firewall rules can block Steam or the game from reading and writing synchronized data. Review recent security notifications and allow the legitimate Steam and game executables when appropriate. Avoid turning protection off permanently; if a temporary test is necessary, restore protection immediately and confirm that the rule is limited to the affected application.

6. Inspect game-specific Cloud behavior

Games do not all save in the same place or synchronize the same file types. A title may use a separate launcher, multiple profiles, local settings, or files that its developer excludes from Steam Cloud. If one game fails repeatedly while other titles synchronize, identify that game’s documented save location and support notes, then check whether its files are being redirected, renamed, or generated by a mod. The available evidence does not establish a single current list of games with special behavior, so a title-specific support page is more reliable than a universal path.

One game or every game? Use the pattern to narrow the cause

Observed pattern Most useful interpretation Next action
Several games fail at the same time The shared Steam client, account state, network, storage, or service path is implicated. Check online status, restart Steam, verify free disk space, and retry a different title after the client reconnects.
Only one title fails repeatedly The game’s save location, permissions, launcher, mods, or Cloud implementation deserves attention. Back up that title’s saves and consult its current support information before changing files.
Failure follows one computer Local access, security software, storage, or that computer’s Steam session may be responsible. Compare the same account and title on another trusted network or device, without overwriting the known-good copy.
Failure persists across networks and restarts A transient connection is less likely; a file-access or account/service issue needs escalation. Document the exact title, timestamps, devices, and messages, then contact Steam Support or the game developer with that information.

An optional reset reported by some users

Some players report resolving a title-specific problem by turning off that game’s Cloud setting, restarting Steam, and turning Cloud back on. This workaround is described in an old Steam Community thread (“[Solved:] Steam was unable to sync your files”).

This is anecdotal, not a universal Valve remedy, and behavior varies by game. Make a manual backup first, do not use the reset to decide which version is correct, and stop if disabling Cloud causes the local files or conflict information you need to disappear.

Will launching anyway lose your save?

It can. Steam’s warning specifically says that application settings or progress may not be in sync and that launching may lose changes or progress. The outcome depends on what the game writes locally and which copy Steam later treats as current. You may open the game and see an older profile, or you may create new local data that complicates a later conflict.

If you already launched, close the game without making more progress, then copy the current local save folder before trying another sync action. Do not assume the newest-looking file is the correct profile; compare its timestamp and contents with the cloud choice Steam offers. If the game has multiple character or profile files, preserve the entire save directory rather than copying only one file.

When to escalate

Escalate after a backup and the basic online, restart, storage, permission, and security checks fail. Provide Steam Support or the game’s developer with the game title, whether other games are affected, the computers and networks tested, the exact warning text, and the local/cloud timestamps shown by Steam. This information distinguishes a client-wide condition from a title-specific save problem.

Do not delete local saves, clear Cloud data, or repeatedly switch between upload and download without preserving copies. Those actions can remove the evidence needed to recover the desired progress. If neither version loads correctly after a documented backup, the developer’s support process is the appropriate place to ask about save format, profile repair, or known game-specific defects.
