Wishlist and Follow are separate actions on Steam game pages, so selecting one does not replace the other. If you want both a personal reminder for a game and its community announcements, use both.
Which should you use for an upcoming game?
Choose Wishlist for release and deal reminders
Add a game to your Wishlist if you want to save it for later and receive eligible notifications about its release or discounts. Valve’s 2016 announcement described email alerts when a wishlisted game released or left Early Access; Steam’s current notification page describes email and mobile app alerts for certain sale promotions. Choose Follow for a game’s announcements
Follow the game if you want its announcements in the community activity feed. Valve describes this as the purpose of following a game in its Steam Discovery Update. Follow is the better fit for development news and other posts from the game’s Steam community, rather than for saving the title to your personal Wishlist.

Follow the creator for more than one game
Follow a developer or publisher if you want updates about that creator’s announcements and new releases, not just news about one title. Steam’s creator homepage announcement says followed creators’ releases can be surfaced on the Steam homepage and that email notifications are available subject to opt-out. Those discovery placements are not a guarantee that a particular game will appear in a particular place.
What notifications should you expect?
Wishlist alerts and Follow announcements are different kinds of updates. Valve’s 2016 notification announcement said that email would be sent when a wishlisted game released or transitioned out of Early Access. Steam’s notification overview now describes email and mobile app alerts for certain sale promotions and lets users change or disable notification preferences. Because notification availability and delivery depend on current settings, check Steam’s notification preferences rather than assuming every user will receive every alert.

Following a game is specifically associated with its announcements in the community activity feed; it should not be treated as a substitute for Wishlisting when your main goal is release or discount alerts. For an illustrative example of the distinction, a game publisher separately recommends Wishlist for release email and Follow for news, though that publisher guidance is not a universal guarantee. Steam has described discovery surfaces that can include wishlisted games and releases from followed creators, including Upcoming Releases. These systems may affect where games are surfaced, but Steam’s descriptions do not guarantee a specific placement or visibility outcome for an individual game. The Steam Q&A about Upcoming Games also includes historical statistics about an earlier storefront layout; those figures describe that past layout, not current use of Wishlist or Follow.
