But the project’s reviewed README does not publish a 96% RAM-reduction result, measurements, or a benchmark method. Treat that percentage as an unverified headline claim, not an established outcome.
What SteamLite does
SteamLite describes itself as “A tiny program to condense Steam’s resource usage by controlling its CEF (Chromium Embedded Framework) and offering lightweight launch options.” It is a DLL loaded by Steam from the folder containing steam.exe, according to the project’s GitHub README.

The utility’s central control is whether Steam’s CEF is enabled. Its README lists three modes, plus launch options:

When you save options, SteamLite creates or updates a desktop shortcut that launches Steam with those choices. Its settings are stored in SteamLite.ini in the Steam root folder.

Does SteamLite really reduce Steam RAM usage by 96%?
The reviewed README does not report a 96% reduction, a RAM measurement, or a test method. It also does not identify a baseline, Steam or Windows version, hardware configuration, sample size, or conditions under which such a result would have been measured. The documentation therefore does not substantiate the headline number, and there is no basis in it for presenting 96% as a verified result.
This is a limit of the project documentation reviewed on October 13, 2026; it does not prove that no separate test exists. No independent benchmark is established by the available sources. Before relying on a performance claim, look for a reproducible comparison that specifies what was measured, how Steam was configured, and whether the same workload was used before and after the change.

What CEF modes mean for use
The automatic mode is the clearest option for someone who wants Steam’s CEF off during gameplay but on when no game is running. The README documents that switching behavior, but it does not give a feature-by-feature account of what changes when CEF is off. Do not assume that a particular store, library, community, or other Steam screen will work normally in that mode without checking it on your own setup.
The documented modes give you control over CEF availability; they do not establish a particular amount of memory saved or prove that a game will run faster. If you try the utility, compare Steam’s behavior and memory use under the same conditions, and keep in mind that the project does not provide a benchmark procedure.

How to install and remove SteamLite
The steps below reflect the project README’s instructions; they have not been independently tested here. Check the current release notes and compatibility information before installing, because releases and Steam client compatibility can change.
- Download the latest release from the SteamLite GitHub Releases page.
- Place
user32.dllin the folder that containssteam.exe. - Start Steam and configure the desired CEF mode and launch options.
- Close Steam, then use the SteamLite desktop shortcut created or updated when you saved the settings.
To remove the utility, the README says to delete user32.dll. To reset its saved configuration separately, delete SteamLite.ini from the Steam root folder.

What a RAM reduction would—and would not—solve
Reducing a program’s memory use and improving game performance are different claims. Steam Support explains that when a system runs short of memory, the operating system may move some RAM contents to slower disk-based storage. That general behavior can help explain why memory pressure matters, but it does not show that SteamLite reduces memory use by 96% or improves game performance. SteamLite is a software option for controlling CEF and launch behavior, not a demonstrated fix for every system-memory problem. The project’s documentation does not establish a quantified benefit, and buying more RAM is not required by the installation instructions or shown to reduce Steam’s own memory consumption.
