Valve also released a separate Steam Client update for Frame that day; its OpenGL streaming color-accuracy fix and other client changes are not part of SteamOS 0.4.5.
What changed in SteamOS 0.4.5 Beta?
Valve’s Steam Frame announcement page describes 0.4.5 as an update for the Steam Frame Beta channel, with features still being tested. Its listed change is: “Improved color clarity during VR streaming (fixed headset chroma regression).”
The note identifies a headset chroma regression fix, not a general upgrade to resolution, latency, frame rate, or all aspects of visual quality. Valve provides no measurement or testing conditions for the change.
How to opt into the Steam Frame Beta channel
- On Steam Frame, open Settings > System > System Update Channel.
- Select the Beta channel to opt in and receive its updates.
Because this is Beta-channel software, the update includes features that Valve says are still being tested.

What changed in the separate Steam Client update for Frame?
Valve’s October 6 announcement lists a distinct Steam Client update for Frame and says it was released for all users. Its changes span Steam Frame settings and menus, Wireless Adapter setup, and general client behavior.
| Area | Client update change |
|---|---|
| Steam Frame settings and menus | Shows the user-visible serial number in Settings; displays the Guided Tour when any new account logs in; and adds spectator status and a stop button to the Streaming Menu. |
| Wireless Adapter | Corrects the Wi-Fi channel list shown in manual configuration across regions. |
| General client | Fixes recording and screenshot filters, improves notification text layout, fixes header and footer flicker after waking from sleep, and resolves a crash affecting some native Linux games. |
| Remote Play | Improves color accuracy when streaming an OpenGL game. |
The Remote Play note concerns color accuracy for OpenGL game streaming in the client update. It is separate from the SteamOS 0.4.5 fix for headset chroma during VR streaming.

Is the earlier battery-life improvement part of 0.4.5?
No. Valve’s previous SteamOS 0.4 release notes attribute an “up to 12%” battery-lifetime improvement during streaming and local gameplay to an earlier 0.4 release. Valve says the result varies with framerate and content; it is not listed as a new benefit in 0.4.5.
Earlier notes also discuss VR streaming reliability, including Error 17. Those notes said PC users should opt into SteamVR 2.18.2 or later to reduce connection issues, and described 2.18.2 as being on the beta branch at that time. That historical advice is not a new 0.4.5 requirement.
