Valve has released SteamOS 3.9.3 in the Beta and Preview channels, with its headline change described as “Improved support for Steam Frame wireless adapter.” This is a test-channel build rather than a stable-channel release. SteamOS 3.9 also brings a Linux 7.2 kernel rebase and a fix for frame limiting during Steam Machine-to-Steam Frame streaming, making the update relevant to anyone preparing a Linux-based host for Steam Frame.
What SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta changes
Valve’s 3.9.3 release notes identify improved support for the Steam Frame wireless adapter as the principal general change. The update is available through the Beta and Preview channels, where features are still being tested.

That makes the release more than a USB or wireless-dongle compatibility tweak: it addresses a specific host-to-headset streaming path.

SteamOS 3.9 also updates the Arch Linux base and moves Desktop Mode from Plasma 6.4.3 to Plasma 6.7.3. Hardware and system changes include a Linux kernel rebase to Linux 7.2, preliminary hibernation support, a wpa_supplicant default for new installations, and improved accelerated-graphics support for virtual machines.

- Corrected first-attempt connections to hidden Wi-Fi networks.
- Improved Steam Remote Play on Steam Machine when no external display is attached.
- Addressed VRR and frame-limiter behavior.
- Improved suspend and resume on RDNA1 and RDNA2 GPUs.
- Added fixes involving Legion Go 2 and ASUS firmware fan behavior.
- Addressed game launches on Intel Panther Lake hardware.
Does SteamOS 3.9.3 support the Steam Frame wireless adapter?
Yes, the Beta release explicitly improves support for the adapter. However, “support” does not mean that every documented Steam Frame workflow is already fully supported on Linux.

Valve’s Steam Frame support guide says: “Full support for SteamVR and Steam Frame streaming via the wireless adapter are currently available on Windows only.” The same guidance says that, once Steam Frame ships, Linux-PC users of the wireless dongle will need SteamOS 3.9 or later, or a Linux distribution running kernel 7.2 or later.

In practical terms, SteamOS 3.9+ or a Linux 7.2+ kernel is the stated baseline for Linux users. The guide’s Windows qualification remains important: meeting the Linux version requirement does not turn Linux into the currently documented full-support platform for every SteamVR and Steam Frame streaming feature.

Valve has not published measured latency, throughput, or reliability figures for this release in the available release information, so those characteristics should not be inferred from the version number or the adapter-support note.
Should you install the Beta?
Install it if
- You are testing a Steam Machine-to-Steam Frame setup and need the 3.9 branch’s adapter and frame-limiter fixes.
- You specifically need SteamOS 3.9 features, including the Linux 7.2 kernel rebase.
- You can tolerate regressions and have a recovery plan for a test-channel operating-system build.
Wait for a stable release if
- The device is your primary gaming system and uninterrupted play matters more than early hardware support.
- You do not need the Steam Frame adapter improvements yet.
- You cannot troubleshoot update-channel problems, suspend/resume issues, or game-specific regressions.
The safest decision is therefore conditional: SteamOS 3.9.3 is relevant for early Steam Frame testing, but its Beta and Preview availability means it should not be treated as proof that the stable channel has received the same changes.

What is not established yet
Valve’s release information does not establish a retail price, stock position, or a verified retailer listing for the Steam Frame wireless adapter. Buyers should check current official and retailer information immediately before purchasing. The release notes also do not provide a universal guarantee for every Linux distribution, VR title, or wireless-network configuration.

Do I need SteamOS 3.9 for the Steam Frame wireless adapter on Linux?
Valve’s Steam Frame guide states that Linux-PC users will need SteamOS 3.9 or later, or Linux kernel 7.2 or later, once Steam Frame ships.

Is SteamOS 3.9.3 a stable release?
No. SteamOS 3.9.3 is offered in the Beta and Preview channels, so it is test-channel software rather than a normal stable-channel announcement.
Does Linux have full Steam Frame wireless-adapter streaming support?
Valve currently documents full SteamVR and Steam Frame streaming via the wireless adapter on Windows only. Linux has a stated SteamOS 3.9 or kernel 7.2 baseline, but that is not the same as a claim of full feature parity.
