Yes, the deal was real—but it is no longer available. During Black Friday 2025, Valve discounted the 256GB LCD Steam Deck by 20%, from $399 to $319.20 before tax, commonly rounded to $320. The offer did not include the OLED models and was reported as ending around Saturday, November 29, 2025. Treat it as a historical deal, not a current September 2026 price.

Which Steam Deck was discounted?
This was the entry-level 256GB LCD Steam Deck, based on Valve’s original Zen 2-based hardware platform. It was not a performance-upgraded generation, a 512GB or 1TB OLED model, or an OLED version sold at the same price.

But “most games” does not mean every game runs perfectly. Performance varies by title, and SteamOS compatibility depends partly on Proton and each game’s implementation.

What buyers gave up compared with the OLED Deck
| Area | 256GB LCD model | OLED models |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 7-inch LCD | Larger OLED display |
| Screen quality | Lower contrast and generally dimmer presentation | Deeper blacks, stronger contrast, and a brighter, more premium viewing experience |
| Storage | 256GB internal storage | Larger storage options available |
| Battery experience | Smaller capacity and less efficient display hardware | Improved battery capacity and efficiency |
| Core capability | Original Zen 2-based platform | Similar broad performance class with hardware refinements |
| Value | Lowest entry price | Better display, battery, and storage experience |
The discount made the LCD model cheaper; it did not make it equivalent to an OLED Deck. If the handheld would be used frequently away from a charger, or if screen quality matters, the OLED model may be the better long-term purchase when the price gap is modest.
Is 256GB enough?
It can be enough for smaller indie games, older PC titles, emulation libraries where legally obtained, and a rotating selection of larger games. It is restrictive for anyone who wants several modern AAA games installed at once. Usable space is also lower than the headline capacity after the operating system and formatting are accounted for.
The simplest solution is a reputable, high-capacity microSD card. It is convenient and avoids opening the handheld, although game loading can be slower than from the internal SSD. Buyers should avoid suspiciously cheap cards and counterfeit marketplace listings.

Replacing the internal SSD offers faster, larger storage, but it requires disassembling the device, backing up data, and reinstalling or restoring the operating system. It is a more technical and riskier upgrade than adding a microSD card.
How capable was the discounted hardware?
The LCD Steam Deck’s value came from its low price, portability, SteamOS interface, and handheld-friendly experience—not from matching a modern gaming laptop.
- Many games work well with tuned graphics settings and a sensible frame-rate cap.
- Newer, demanding AAA releases may require reduced settings, lower resolution, or compromises in frame rate.
- Games using restrictive anti-cheat systems may not work properly on SteamOS.
- Steam Deck Verified status can change as games, updates, and compatibility layers evolve.
- Windows remains important for some multiplayer games and other software that does not support SteamOS well.
It was therefore a strong budget handheld, but not a guarantee that every Steam title would run without configuration or compromise.

How the historical alternatives compared
| Device | Price context | Strengths | Trade-offs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck 256GB LCD | $319.20 during the 2025 promotion | Lowest entry price, mature SteamOS experience, simple access to Steam games | LCD screen, limited internal storage, older hardware class | Budget buyers and players focused on indie, older, or moderately demanding games |
| Steam Deck OLED | More expensive than the LCD deal | Better display, improved battery experience, larger storage options | Higher purchase price; not part of the $320 promotion | Frequent handheld users who value display quality and battery life |
| Lenovo Legion Go S | About $450 at Best Buy during the 2025 promotion, reduced from approximately $650 | Newer processor, more storage, larger higher-resolution display, and SteamOS support out of the box | Substantially more expensive than the Deck deal; different ergonomics and software considerations | Buyers willing to pay more for newer hardware and a larger screen |
The Legion Go S price was specific to that retailer and Black Friday period; it should not be treated as current pricing. Its newer hardware made it a more capable alternative on paper, but the $130-plus premium over the historical Deck price was significant.
What else was on sale?
The hardware discount accompanied a broad Steam game sale with thousands of discounted PC games. Publisher-specific promotions were separate offers. For example, Steam’s official announcement documented a 2K Black Friday promotion featuring games including Borderlands 4, Mafia: The Old Country, NBA 2K26, Civilization VII, and Risk of Rain 2; that promotion ended December 4, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. PST, rather than necessarily ending with the Steam Deck discount.
The deal also should not be confused with Steam’s 2025 Autumn Sale, which ran from September 29 through October 6 and included a separate 20% discount on 256GB LCD Steam Deck models, or the 2025–26 Winter Sale, which ran from December 18 through January 5.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Who should consider an equivalent deal today?
Although the original promotion has ended, a used or refurbished 256GB LCD Deck near the historical price could still make sense if you:
- want the lowest-cost entry into SteamOS handheld gaming;
- mainly play indie, older, or moderately demanding games;
- are comfortable adding a microSD card;
- do not need an OLED screen or premium battery experience; and
- understand that some multiplayer games may not work properly on SteamOS.
Choose an OLED Deck instead if you use the device often, play away from a charger, care about screen quality, or find that the LCD model is only slightly cheaper. Choose a newer competing handheld if raw performance, a larger display, higher resolution, or Windows compatibility matters more than price and SteamOS simplicity.
Do not buy an LCD Deck solely because it is described as “the best deal” if you expect high settings in every current AAA game, require flawless compatibility with anti-cheat-heavy multiplayer titles, or want a large internal library without external storage.
Bottom line
At $319.20, the 256GB LCD Steam Deck was an excellent historical value and a genuine Valve promotion. Its compromises were real: an LCD screen, smaller battery, older platform, and limited storage. The OLED models were excluded, and the deal ended in November 2025. Anyone evaluating a similar price now should compare a used or refurbished LCD Deck with current OLED and newer-handheld options rather than assuming the old $320 promotion is still available.
