What Steam’s “first-ever” Black Friday sale actually was
The phrase “first-ever” needs a qualification. Steam had offered discounts during Black Friday before: in 2015, Valve announced its Exploration Sale would run through Black Friday and Cyber Monday. What was new in 2025 was a Black Friday-branded offer period, not Steam’s first discounts overlapping the holiday.

Valve’s Steamworks announcement, reproduced in a Steam Community discussion, said Steam would not host a Black Friday sale of its own. Instead, it would surface “Black Friday special offers” on its Discounts and Events page from November 24 through December 1, 2025. Valve’s 2015 announcement confirms that the earlier Exploration Sale already included Black Friday discounts.
That distinction also matters for who set the prices. Steamworks’ seasonal sales documentation says developers submit discounts, while Steam may surface discounted games using factors such as tags, popularity, and recommendations. The event was a way to feature offers, rather than evidence that Valve independently chose every discount.

The Steam Deck discount was also historical
PC Gamer and TechRadar both reported a 20% discount on the Steam Deck 256GB LCD during the offer period, with US coverage putting it at around $319. That was a sale-period figure; the cited coverage does not establish the model’s present availability or price.
