The note does not name a beta build, affected games, operating systems, graphics cards, or drivers, so the evidence supports a narrow historical claim—not a diagnosis for a particular setup today.
What Valve’s March 2018 note says
In its March 21, 2018 Steam Client update notes, Valve wrote: “Fixed an issue where the in-game overlay could crash or become unresponsive in some Vulkan-based games”. This confirms that Valve recorded a fix for an overlay problem affecting some Vulkan games. It does not say that all Vulkan games were affected, or explain the bug’s cause.
The word “beta” appears in the topic’s framing, but the cited release-note text does not identify a beta branch or build. Without another source, it cannot establish which beta was involved.
Why the overlay was relevant to Vulkan
Steam Overlay support for Vulkan games was an intended client feature, not an unrelated component. Valve’s March 8, 2016 Steam Client update announcement said the update “Added Steam Overlay support for games using the Vulkan graphics API”. The 2018 entry therefore documents a compatibility defect in a feature Valve had introduced for Vulkan titles.

How this differs from Valve’s later Vulkan fixes
Valve’s July 27, 2022 Steam Client update notes describe separate Vulkan-related problems: the overlay not working with Vulkan 1.3 applications, and crashes in Vulkan games using VK_EXT_graphics_pipeline_library. Those entries are more specific about the compatibility conditions than the 2018 note. The release notes do not establish that the later problems shared the earlier issue’s cause or were a recurrence of the same bug.
What the historical fix does—and does not—establish
- Established: Valve recorded a fix on March 21, 2018 for an overlay crash or unresponsive condition in some Vulkan-based games.
- Not identified in that note: the beta branch or build, game list, operating system, GPU, driver, number of affected users, or crash rate.
- Not established by a 2018 release note: whether the issue affects the current Steam client or any particular modern game setup.
The note is useful evidence of a historical Steam Overlay compatibility issue and its recorded fix. It is not enough to infer a current fault, identify a machine-specific cause, or connect the 2018 entry to Valve’s separately described Vulkan fixes from 2022.
