Director Michael Sarnoski and cinematographer Pat Scola were reported scouting Iceland for the live-action Death Stranding movie, with footage showing waterfalls and wide stretches of green moss. The images offer a glimpse of landscapes under consideration—not confirmation that those sites will appear in the finished film. Filming is expected in 2027, with Iceland and Northern Ireland reported as planned production regions.
What the Iceland scouting update shows
A report published by MeriStation on October 7, 2026, said Sarnoski and cinematographer Pat Scola were scouting Iceland for the A24 and Square Peg production. It cited a social post dated October 6 and described footage of waterfalls and extensive green moss. The report did not identify the exact sites or say that any had been selected for filming. MeriStation’s report therefore establishes a location scout, not a final location list.
The landscapes may feel at home in a story world known for stark terrain and difficult journeys, but that is a visual impression, not a confirmed statement about the film’s design or locations.
Where and when is the Death Stranding movie expected to shoot?
MeriStation reported that filming is expected to begin in 2027 and that production is planned across Iceland and Northern Ireland. That is an expectation, not a confirmed start date. The report does not provide a precise schedule, identify the final filming sites, or establish how much production will take place in either region.

What story will the movie tell?
The film is planned as a new story in the Death Stranding universe, centered on new characters rather than a direct retelling of Sam Porter Bridges’ journey from the game. In a June 2026 interview with /Film, Sarnoski said creator Hideo Kojima had given him room to explore the world with his own characters and tell a story adjacent to the games that “does its own thing.” The interview also discusses the director’s approach to the project.
That approach leaves room for the film to share the games’ setting without following their central plot. It does not, by itself, confirm appearances by familiar game characters.

Has the cast been announced?
No. MeriStation reported on October 7, 2026, that the cast had not been officially announced. Reports that Norman Reedus is interested in returning are not a casting confirmation. Earlier coverage likewise described the project as developing around new characters, but it does not establish a final cast.
