Steam’s September 2026 Survey: 32 GB Is the Leading RAM Capacity, RTX 5070 Tops GPU Models

Steam’s September 2026 survey found 32 GB was the largest RAM group and the RTX 5070 led individual GPU models, but the results describe respondents, not all PC owners or performance.

In Steam’s September 2026 Hardware & Software Survey, 32 GB was the largest system-RAM group in the reported sample, and the GeForce RTX 5070 was the most common individual graphics-card model. Neither result means that most PC owners have 32 GB or that the RTX 5070 is the best GPU to buy: the survey is an optional, anonymous snapshot of participating Steam users, not a census or a performance test.

What does the September 2026 Steam Hardware Survey say?

Valve describes the survey as monthly and says it collects information about the computer hardware and software its customers use. Participation is optional and anonymous, so the results describe respondents rather than every Steam user, PC gamer, or computer owner. Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey is the primary source for its scope and methodology.

The September figures below come from Hardware Busters’ October 2, 2026 reporting. Valve’s page confirms the survey and its method, but the available page text did not expose the combined RAM percentages cited in that report. The RAM and GPU shares are therefore attributed to Hardware Busters, not presented as percentages independently extracted from Valve.

Is 32 GB of RAM now standard for gaming PCs?

Not in the sense that it is used by most PC owners. It was the leading capacity group in the September Steam sample, but its reported share was less than half.

Steam survey view 32 GB RAM 16 GB RAM What the comparison shows
Combined September sample 42.22% — Hardware Busters, 2026 37.82% — Hardware Busters, 2026 32 GB led by 4.40 percentage points.
Windows-only view 43.28% — Hardware Busters, 2026 37.60% — Hardware Busters, 2026 32 GB led by 5.68 percentage points.

“Largest group” or “plurality” is the accurate description: 42.22% is below 50%, so the combined-sample result does not show that a majority had 32 GB. The Windows-only percentages use a different filter and should not be substituted for the combined-sample figures.

What is the most popular graphics card on Steam?

The GeForce RTX 5070 was the leading individual GPU model in Hardware Busters’ account of the September 2026 survey, at 5.86% — Hardware Busters, 2026. Its reported share was up 2.30 percentage points from 3.56% in August. This describes how frequently that model appeared in the survey sample; it does not rank graphics cards by speed, price-to-performance, or suitability for a particular game.

Why should month-to-month changes be read cautiously?

Hardware Busters reported that the Simplified Chinese share of respondents rose by 7.42 percentage points to 31.39% in September — Hardware Busters, 2026. The report also says Valve does not cross-tabulate hardware results by language, so the effect of that change in respondent composition on particular hardware figures cannot be calculated from the available reporting. It is a reason to be careful with month-to-month comparisons, not evidence that any language group caused a hardware result.

What else changed in the September sample?

Display-resolution figures provide context for the same survey snapshot: 1920×1080 was reported at 47.91%, while 2560×1440 reached 27.04%, up 5.18 percentage points — Hardware Busters, 2026. These figures describe reported display resolutions, not frame rates or the performance needed to run games at either resolution.

Does the survey show what PC gamers should buy?

No. Popularity is not a buying recommendation. The RAM and GPU shares do not establish what a particular player needs, whether an upgrade will improve performance, or whether a component is compatible with their system. Choose based on the games and settings you use, relevant benchmarks, budget, and the rest of your PC. Before buying memory, check the motherboard or laptop’s supported memory generation and capacity, CPU support, and available slots.
