STEEL BALL RUN JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is the Netflix anime at the center of the ending-song debate. A report by Wukeer says its use of Yuki Chiba’s “Dead or Alive” departs from a 14-year JoJo anime practice of using Western songs as ending themes, and that the choice drew criticism. Netflix’s release announcements confirm the series’ schedule, but do not confirm the music backstory or establish how widespread fan anger is. Its first-half 2026 view count also needs context: it led Netflix exclusive anime in one report, but did not lead all anime titles in that comparison.
What JoJo tradition did Steel Ball Run reportedly break?
According to Wukeer’s October 2, 2026 report, previous JoJo anime endings featured recognizable Western songs, while Steel Ball Run uses Yuki Chiba’s “Dead or Alive.” Wukeer presents the change as the end of a 14-year tradition. The examples it names are “Roundabout,” “Walk Like an Egyptian,” “Last Train Home,” “I Want You,” “Freek’n You,” “Modern Crusaders” and “Distant Dreamer.”
That history and the claimed 14-year span are Wukeer’s account; Netflix’s announcements about the series do not independently verify them. The same qualification applies to the production explanation: Wukeer attributes the change to a shift in music-production responsibility from Warner Bros. Japan to Warner Music Japan, and notes Chiba’s 2025 deal with Warner Music Japan. That is reported context, not an official explanation established by Netflix.
Why are JoJo fans upset about “Dead or Alive”?
The criticism, as Wukeer describes it, is that a Japanese song replaces the familiar Western-song approach associated with prior JoJo endings. For viewers who valued that musical pattern as part of the anime’s identity, the change can feel like a break with the series’ style. That explains the reported disagreement without assuming every viewer shared it.

Wukeer reports fan criticism, but the available account does not establish that all—or even most—fans are furious. Nor does it provide a directly attributable quote from a named creator explaining the choice. Treat the scale of the reaction and the reason for the production decision as unconfirmed beyond that report.
When did Steel Ball Run release, and what is the schedule?
Netflix announced a special 47-minute “1st STAGE” episode for March 19, 2026. Its later Anime Expo announcement set the weekly run at 11 episodes, streaming every Friday from September 25, 2026. The March special and the later weekly schedule are separate release details, not competing premiere dates.

Netflix describes Steel Ball Run as the latest entry in Hirohiko Araki’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure franchise. Its December 2025 announcement said the manga had surpassed 120 million copies in circulation; that is Netflix’s published figure, not an independently audited sales total.
Is Steel Ball Run Netflix’s biggest anime of 2026?
It depends on what “biggest” means. July 2026 reports of Netflix’s first-half figures list Steel Ball Run at 8.3 million views, behind Jujutsu Kaisen season three at 9.4 million views. ComicBook.com describes Steel Ball Run as Netflix’s biggest exclusive anime so far, a narrower category than all anime titles on the service.

| Title or comparison | Reported first-half 2026 figure | What the comparison means |
|---|---|---|
| Steel Ball Run | 8.3 million views, reported by animeMANGA on July 21, 2026, and ComicBook.com on July 17, 2026 | Described by ComicBook.com as Netflix’s biggest exclusive anime so far |
| Jujutsu Kaisen season three | 9.4 million views, reported by animeMANGA on July 21, 2026, and ComicBook.com on July 17, 2026 | Higher views than Steel Ball Run in the reported comparison; available across multiple platforms |
| Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai | 55.8 million hours watched, reported by animeMANGA on July 21, 2026 | Led anime by hours watched in that report; hours are not the same metric as views |
The figures are secondary reports of Netflix first-half data, not a measure of fan approval or a full-year 2026 ranking. In that comparison, “biggest Netflix exclusive anime” is defensible; “most-viewed anime” without a category qualifier is not.

The music dispute concerns a reported change in an established creative pattern, while the view figures describe audience reach over a defined period. Neither proves the other: a high view count does not show viewers approved of the ending song, and reported criticism does not show the series failed commercially. The series is a major Netflix exclusive by the cited comparison, but the available evidence does not establish why the music choice changed or how representative the backlash is.
