To complete Steel Resolve in Avowed, investigate the rangers’ deaths in Emerald Stair: speak with Acierno, question Casagrada and Dorso, search Ogre’s Cave and the Root-Strangled Tree, then report back to Acierno. The safest approach is to finish the quest before the Naku Tedek section of the main quest Ancient Soil; Patch 1.2.2 allows some players to finish afterward only if they completed enough objectives first.
How to start Steel Resolve
Steel Resolve is an Emerald Stair side quest. The Game8 walkthrough, updated March 5, 2025, lists two ways to unlock it:
- Speak with Ranger Captain Acierno at Ranger Headquarters.
- Free Ranger Verano during the The Trantons bounty.
If you have access to Ranger Headquarters, talking to Acierno is the direct route into the investigation.
Complete the investigation
- Talk to Acierno. Start the quest at Ranger Headquarters and take on the investigation.
- Question Ranger Casagrada. The guide places her at the Fior mes Iverno Docks.
- Question Ranger Dorso. Find her at the Fior Southern Gate Beacon.
- Search Ogre’s Cave. Defeat Ulrask, then investigate the area and examine Ranger Monato’s corpse to find his journal.
- Find the Root-Strangled Tree. Head west of Fior toward Lake Lacuna in the Wildwoods and search the tree for evidence.
- Meet a ranger at the designated location. Continue to the marked meeting point after examining the tree.
- Return to Acierno. Report what you found and choose how to explain the murder.
These locations and directions are reported by the Game8 guide; use quest markers if your map or route differs.

Choose what to do about Dorso
Spoilers for the quest’s choices and reported rewards: At the meeting with Dorso, the guide lists three options: attack her, help her, or let her go. It does not establish one choice as universally best, nor does it provide a complete account of how each option affects later events or access.
- Attack: Game8 reports that defeating Dorso can yield an Exceptional Dagger.
- Help or let her go: These are dialogue alternatives; the guide does not establish their full downstream consequences.
When you return to Acierno, the report options listed are accusing Dorso, accusing Casagrada, or saying there was no murderer. Choose the account you believe fits the evidence; the available guide does not establish a single correct accusation for every outcome.

Optional Steel Garrote encounter
The Steel Garrote confrontation near Waterfall Cave is optional, separate from the required investigation steps. Game8 reports Death Knight Armor at the camp and recommends handling this encounter before Ancient Soil. Treat that timing as the guide’s recommendation, not a guarantee about every quest state.

Game8 warns that the quest automatically fails after the Naku Tedek section of Ancient Soil, so completing it beforehand is the safest plan. Obsidian’s Patch 1.2.2 notes, posted February 18, 2025, qualify that warning: “Players can now complete Steel Resolve after the main quest in Emerald Stair if they had completed enough objectives beforehand.” This is a conditional exception, not a promise that every player can return and finish the quest after advancing.
