They combine low-latency 2.4GHz wireless, Bluetooth 5.3, active noise cancellation, transparency mode, Qi charging, IP55 protection, console-specific presets, and broad device support in a genuinely portable design. They are worth buying if you want earbuds for console, PC, handheld, and mobile gaming. They are less compelling if you mainly want premium music ANC, a boom-mic-quality voice experience, maximum battery life, or the comfort of a conventional over-ear headset.
The most important detail is choosing the correct version: buy the Xbox edition for Xbox consoles and the PlayStation edition for PS5 or PS4. They are not simply one universal model with different branding.

Which Arctis GameBuds version should you buy?
The PlayStation model is built around PS5 and PS4 support, including PS5-oriented features such as Tempest 3D AudioTech compatibility. The Xbox model is the one intended for Xbox console use. Both versions can also be useful with PC, handhelds, phones, and other compatible hardware, but cross-platform support does not mean that one dongle delivers every console feature.
#1 Best Overall
- QUICK-SWITCH DUAL WIRELESS — High-speed 2.4GHz wireless specifically for PS5 gaming, or switch to Bluetooth 5.3 for mobile
- ACTIVE NOICE CANCELLATION — 4-mic hybrid ANC provides true gaming immersion; ability to switch transparency mode for awareness
- 100 GAME AUDIO PRESETS — Easy-to-use SteelSeries Arctis Companion App contains 100 presets to boost critical sounds in game on your PS5, PC and more
- 360 SPATIAL AUDIO — Immersive sound puts you right in the action with directional awareness, enhanced by custom Neodymium Magnetic Drivers
- LONG BATTERY — 10-hour battery satisfies marathon sessions, extendable with a Qi Charging Case using 3x extra charges for up to 40 hours of use
A PlayStation buyer who accidentally purchases the Xbox model, or vice versa, may still find uses for Bluetooth or PC connectivity. That does not make the editions interchangeable for their advertised console functions.
What makes the GameBuds different?
These are true-wireless earbuds, but they are not merely Bluetooth earbuds with a gaming label. The box includes a USB-C 2.4GHz dongle intended to provide lower latency than standard Bluetooth. For gaming, connect the dongle; for phones and general listening, use Bluetooth.
SteelSeries also advertises Quick-Switch, allowing you to move between 2.4GHz and Bluetooth with a triple tap of the earbud button. The dongle includes a USB-C connection and a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter for devices that need it.
The other major differentiator is software. The Arctis Companion App offers game-specific EQ presets, separate gaming and mobile profiles, and customization from iOS or Android. SteelSeries advertises more than 100 game presets. That is useful when a particular game benefits from a different tonal balance, but the number alone does not mean every preset will improve every game. SteelSeries GG and Engine provide PC configuration and firmware tools.
Design, fit, and comfort
The GameBuds are smaller and cooler than an over-ear headset, and the case is much easier to carry between a console, laptop, handheld, and phone. Physical earbud controls are preferable to touch controls when you are gaming because accidental taps are less likely. The trade-off is that pressing a physical button can disturb the seal for some ears.
Three ear-tip sizes—small, medium, and large—are included. SteelSeries says it scanned 62,000 ears during development, but that is a design-process claim rather than proof of a universal fit. PC Gamer found the earbuds comfortable in its review, yet in-ear comfort remains much more individual than over-ear comfort.
Try all three tips. The right size should seal without painful pressure and should remain secure when you move your head. Fit affects comfort, bass response, passive isolation, ANC performance, and microphone pickup. Small ears may find the shell intrusive, while listeners who dislike anything inside the ear may still prefer an over-ear headset.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →IP55 protection makes the earbuds resistant to dust and water in the conditions covered by that rating. It does not make them waterproof. Do not swim with them, shower with them, or submerge the charging case or earbuds.
Gaming audio performance
Over 2.4GHz, the GameBuds deliver the connection gaming buyers actually need: responsive audio with no obvious Bluetooth-style delay in normal play. Footsteps, reloads, dialogue, and environmental effects remain easy to follow, while bass gives explosions and cinematic games satisfying weight.
The default tonal balance is not the only experience available. EQ presets can push dialogue or upper-mid detail forward, add impact, or produce a more relaxed balance. This is particularly helpful when switching between a competitive shooter and a story-driven game. The practical value of the preset library is convenience, not the marketing number attached to it.
SteelSeries advertises 360-degree spatial audio. Spatial processing can make a game feel wider and more immersive, but it is not automatically better for positioning. Depending on the title and platform, it may improve the sense of space or make sounds feel more distant and diffuse. Compare it with the platform’s native spatial-audio setting, and avoid stacking multiple spatialization systems unless you prefer the result.

Bluetooth is suitable for casual games, video, music, and podcasts, but the 2.4GHz connection is the better choice for latency-sensitive gaming. Bluetooth behavior and available controls also depend on the connected device.
Microphone quality
The built-in microphones are good enough for ordinary gaming chat and calls, but they do not replace the consistently close, directional pickup of a headset boom mic. TechRadar found voice clear enough for gaming and phone calls in its testing. That is encouraging, but microphone results depend heavily on room acoustics and background noise.
In a quiet room, the GameBuds should be suitable for Discord, Xbox party chat, PSN chat, and routine calls. Fans, keyboards, television audio, and household noise are more difficult. If your priority is broadcasting, frequent meetings, or consistently natural voice pickup in a noisy room, an over-ear headset with a boom microphone remains the safer choice.
Test the microphone in both connection modes. Bluetooth and 2.4GHz can expose different processing and input behavior. Also verify that the console or computer has selected the GameBuds as its input device, rather than continuing to use a laptop microphone or controller mic. If sidetone or microphone monitoring sounds abnormal, check the current app and firmware settings before assuming the hardware is defective.

ANC and transparency mode
The GameBuds use a four-microphone hybrid ANC system, according to SteelSeries, alongside a transparency mode. ANC is most useful against steady low-frequency noise: air conditioning, fans, engines, and room rumble. The ear-tip seal does much of the isolation work, so a poor fit can make the ANC seem weak.
Transparency mode is useful when you need to hear a conversation, doorbell, or nearby traffic without removing the earbuds. It is a practical feature for moving between gaming and everyday use.
Do not buy the GameBuds primarily for the strongest possible travel ANC. Premium music earbuds may handle adaptive noise reduction, wind, and changing environments better. RTINGS’ measurement-oriented review is useful here, but its tested unit was the PlayStation version; its results should not automatically be treated as identical to the Xbox edition.
If ANC sounds thin, hissy, or unnatural, compare all three modes—ANC off, ANC on, and transparency—after trying another tip size. Clean the earbud mesh as well. Some community reports mention crackling or other unusual behavior, but these are anecdotal reports rather than proof of a universal defect.

Battery life and charging
SteelSeries rates the earbuds for up to 10 hours per charge and up to 40 hours with the charging case. The 40-hour total is not 40 hours of continuous listening: SteelSeries specifies that figure for 2.4GHz use with noise control off.
The company also advertises approximately three hours of play after a 15-minute fast charge. The case charges over USB-C and supports Qi wireless charging. ANC, transparency mode, high volume, microphone use, Bluetooth behavior, and the amount of time each earbud spends outside the case can reduce practical runtime. The left and right earbuds may also drain at different rates depending on how the connection and microphone are handled.
Compared with many wireless over-ear gaming headsets, the GameBuds offer less uninterrupted listening per charge. Their advantage is portability and the ability to recharge in the case between sessions. If you regularly play for an entire workday without breaks, an over-ear model may be more convenient.

Connectivity and setup
- Charge both earbuds and place them correctly in the case.
- Connect the USB-C dongle to the console, PC, handheld, or another compatible device.
- Use the included USB-C-to-USB-A adapter if the device requires USB-A.
- On the Xbox dongle, check that the Xbox/PC switch is set to the intended platform.
- Select the GameBuds as the audio output and microphone input.
- Pair Bluetooth separately with a phone, tablet, or other device through its Bluetooth menu.
- Install the Arctis Companion App or SteelSeries GG when you need EQ, presets, configuration, or firmware management.
Common problems are usually configuration problems before they are hardware failures. If there is no sound, check the dongle mode, USB port, console output assignment, volume, and whether another headset remains selected. If Bluetooth connects to the wrong device, disconnect the old pairing before trying again. If behavior changes after an update, install the current firmware through the supported SteelSeries update path.
SteelSeries’ product support materials include platform-specific FAQs, and the Xbox product information has highlighted a restriction around updating Xbox GameBuds from a PC. Check the current Xbox support instructions before assuming that the PC update workflow applies to that edition.
Compatibility guide

“Works with many platforms” should not be read as “every feature works identically everywhere.” Console chat, spatial audio, volume controls, EQ availability, and firmware tools can vary by platform.
Software: a major strength with added complexity
The Arctis Companion App is one of the product’s strongest features. It lets you manage game-specific EQ presets, maintain separate gaming and mobile profiles, and switch settings without abandoning the game where supported. SteelSeries GG and Engine add PC configuration and firmware management.
The trade-off is that the best experience requires more setup than a basic Bluetooth earbud. You may need a phone app for convenient tuning, PC software for some updates or configuration, and careful attention to whether a setting is stored on the earbuds or depends on the connected device. Not every EQ or spatial-audio function is available in exactly the same way on every platform.
For SteelSeries users who already understand GG and the Arctis ecosystem, this flexibility is a genuine advantage. For someone who wants to plug in a dongle and never install an app, it is unnecessary complexity.
How they compare with the alternatives
Sony INZONE Buds
The INZONE Buds are a sensible comparison for PC and PlayStation owners who prefer Sony’s software and gaming ecosystem. They are a weaker fit for Xbox buyers or anyone specifically attracted to SteelSeries’ preset library and wider console positioning.
PlayStation Pulse Explore
PS5 owners who want first-party PlayStation integration should consider the Pulse Explore. It is less attractive for Xbox users and for buyers seeking the broadest non-PlayStation flexibility.
Razer Hammerhead HyperSpeed
Razer’s Hammerhead HyperSpeed is a direct rival in the premium gaming-earbud category, with 2.4GHz and Bluetooth options. Choose between them based on console edition, software preference, microphone experience, current price, and whether SteelSeries’ preset and charging workflow matter to you.

This is a strong alternative for PC and handheld users who prioritize ANC and ASUS/ROG integration. RTINGS found it offered more impressive ANC in its comparison context, while the GameBuds had a more even sound profile and a more comfortable fit. The ASUS model may therefore suit ANC-focused buyers, while SteelSeries is the safer choice for those who value fit and console-specific software.
EPOS GTW 270 Hybrid
The EPOS GTW 270 Hybrid remains a relevant low-latency gaming-earbud alternative, but it is older and lacks the GameBuds’ combination of current ANC, transparency, Qi charging, and advertised case capacity.
SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5 Wireless
If you like SteelSeries software and presets but do not specifically need earbuds, the Arctis Nova 5 Wireless is the more practical over-ear direction. It should be better suited to long sessions and microphone use, while the GameBuds are lighter, cooler, more discreet, and easier to carry.
Quick Recap
Who should buy the Arctis GameBuds?
- Buy them if you want true-wireless earbuds with both low-latency 2.4GHz and Bluetooth, play across console and mobile devices, value ANC and transparency, and are willing to use companion software.
- Consider them if you are a PC or handheld player comparing several premium earbuds. The feature set is excellent, but fit, microphone performance, ANC quality, and current price should decide the purchase.
- Skip them if you mainly want the strongest music ANC, the longest uninterrupted battery life, a consistently excellent microphone in noisy rooms, or a simple over-ear headset with no platform-specific buying decision.
