SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5: The Gaming Headset for Most People

The Arctis Nova 5 is a versatile wireless gaming headset with long rated battery life, Bluetooth and useful EQ presets—but Xbox buyers need the 5X, and simultaneous audio requires the Nova 7 Gen 2.

Yes—if “most people” means gamers who want one versatile wireless headset rather than the very best sound, microphone, or construction. The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5 combines low-latency 2.4GHz wireless, Bluetooth 5.3, a rated 60-hour battery, USB-C fast charging, a retractable microphone, and a useful mobile app. Its defining limitation is equally important: it switches between wireless sources but does not mix game audio and Bluetooth simultaneously.

Choose the platform variant first. The standard Nova 5 suits PC and broad USB-C use, the Nova 5P is aimed at PlayStation, and the Nova 5X is the correct choice for Xbox. The original North American MSRP was $129.99 in May 2024; current prices vary and should be checked at the retailer before buying.

Presets More than 100 game-focused EQ profiles in the app; catalog availability can change
Launch MSRP $129.99 in North America, announced May 14, 2024—not a guaranteed current price

Wireless behavior: convenient, but not dual-audio

The 2.4GHz connection is the right choice for gaming latency. Bluetooth 5.3 handles phones, tablets and general listening, and a button lets you move between the two. Bluetooth can remain paired, but the Nova 5 is a quick-switch system: it is not a simultaneous game-plus-phone mixer. If you need to hear a call or music over game audio at the same time, the Nova 7 Gen 2 is the relevant upgrade.

This distinction matters more than the Bluetooth label. The Nova 5 is excellent for changing sources; it is not designed for active two-source mixing or answering a phone call while game audio continues underneath.

Sound quality and EQ

Gaming

The Nova 5 can deliver convincing bass impact for cinematic games while keeping dialogue and chat intelligible. For competitive shooters, an EQ preset can make footsteps or directional cues more prominent, but it cannot guarantee better performance and may make explosions or music sound thinner.

Music and video

Out of the box, it is a gaming headset rather than an audiophile monitor. It is perfectly serviceable for streaming, films and everyday music, but listeners who want a highly natural or resolving presentation should compare alternatives at the same street price.

Presets are starting points

The Arctis Companion App provides more than 100 game-specific profiles, and you can save or modify your own EQ. Availability changes as the catalog changes, and a profile made for one mode or player may not suit another. Compare any preset with a neutral setting before keeping it.

The app FAQ explains profile selection and mobile control: SteelSeries Companion App FAQ. Independent measurements and methodology are available from RTINGS, whose test page shows a June 23, 2026 update entry.

Microphone performance

The retractable ClearCast 2.X boom is practical for game chat, Discord and console parties. SteelSeries specifies 32kHz/16-bit microphone capability. On Windows, Sonar’s AI noise cancellation can reduce keyboard, fan and room noise, but processing can introduce artifacts and requires software; it is not automatically better in every room. Raw microphone quality and console processing also differ from a carefully configured PC setup.

For streaming or professional voice work, use a dedicated microphone or compare a headset such as the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro rather than assuming the Nova 5 is class-leading.

Comfort, fit and build

The plastic construction keeps weight and cost under control, but it does not feel like a premium metal headset. Clamp force, ear-cup depth, heat and glasses compatibility depend heavily on head shape. Check whether your ears touch the driver housing and whether the headband has enough adjustment for your head before committing; no single comfort verdict applies to every wearer. The retractable boom is convenient, while hinges and cushions are areas where a more expensive model may feel more substantial.

Battery and charging

SteelSeries rates the Nova 5 for up to 60 hours. That is a maximum claim: volume, microphone use, wireless mode and software behavior affect actual runtime. The launch announcement rates USB-C fast charging at approximately six hours of use after 15 minutes: launch details. Check low-battery warnings and whether the indicator shown by the headset, app and operating system agrees; those are more useful in daily use than the headline number.

Platform support is broad, not identical

Platform Practical expectation
Windows PC Fullest feature set through GG/Sonar, including software ChatMix on Windows 10 and above
Mac USB-C wireless and Bluetooth; SteelSeries lists no ChatMix support
PS4/PS5 USB-C wireless and Bluetooth features vary; PlayStation ChatMix is not supported
Xbox Use Nova 5X and verify the exact Xbox bundle
Switch, Chromebook, handhelds and mobile USB-C dongle or Bluetooth where supported; console and app features can differ
Meta Quest SteelSeries lists USB-C wireless or Bluetooth with audio-only limitations

“Cross-platform” therefore does not mean identical controls everywhere. The official compatibility list is on the product page.

SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5 Wireless Multi-System Gaming Headset - Neodymium Magnetic Drivers [Bluetooth] (Renewed)
  • 100+ GAME AUDIO PRESETS — Unlock tailored audio presets.

Setup and software burden

Mobile

  1. Install the Arctis Companion App.
  2. Put the headset into Bluetooth pairing mode.
  3. Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and select the Nova 5 entry.
  4. Use the app for presets and supported controls.

Windows PC

  1. Connect the USB-C wireless dongle directly to the computer.
  2. Select Nova 5 as Windows output and microphone.
  3. Install SteelSeries GG if you need Sonar, ChatMix, firmware management or advanced routing.
  4. Set game, chat, microphone and EQ paths, then confirm the game is not using a monitor, controller or motherboard output.

Sonar adds powerful routing but creates virtual audio devices that can confuse users who expect plug-and-play behavior. Basic headset use does not require every software feature.

Common connection problems and fixes

  1. Charge and power on the headset.
  2. Confirm the dongle is in the intended 2.4GHz mode.
  3. Reconnect it directly instead of through an unreliable hub.
  4. On mobile, forget the old Bluetooth entry and pair again.
  5. Restart the headset and source device.
  6. Check SteelSeries GG for supported firmware updates.
  7. Re-select Nova 5 as Windows output and microphone.
  8. Use SteelSeries’ Nova 5 troubleshooting flow if the failure continues.

Separate “no pairing,” “paired but silent,” “audio without microphone,” intermittent 2.4GHz signal, app detection failure and incorrect Sonar routing before changing settings. Firmware is not a guaranteed cure for every fault.

  • No active-noise-cancellation feature is claimed on the supplied product material.
  • No simultaneous Bluetooth-and-2.4GHz game mixing.
  • ChatMix is restricted by platform.
  • The full feature set depends on the mobile app or PC software.
  • It is not a premium metal-frame design.
  • Battery replacement, wired analog fallback, cushion replacement and dongle-storage details should be checked in the current manual and product guide before purchase.

Nova 5 versus the alternatives

Headset Choose it when Trade-off
Nova 5 You want broad compatibility, long rated battery life, Bluetooth switching and app EQ No simultaneous audio; plastic construction and software compromises
Nova 7 Gen 2 You need simultaneous 2.4GHz/Bluetooth audio and upgraded construction $199.99 announced MSRP, about $70 above the Nova 5 launch MSRP; battery is rated at more than 50 hours
Razer BlackShark V2 Pro You prioritize its HyperClear Super Wideband microphone, competitive focus or a different software ecosystem Razer’s US store displayed $129.99 during the cited price check; promotions can change

See the Nova 7 Gen 2 page and its announcement. Razer’s current listing is at Razer’s gaming-headset store. A Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Gen 3 can also be worth comparing, but its exact console version, price and feature set should be verified before purchase.

Who should buy the Arctis Nova 5?

  • Buy it for a general PC, PlayStation, Switch or mobile setup when versatility and battery life matter more than luxury materials.
  • Buy the 5X—not the standard model—for Xbox.
  • Choose it if quick switching between game wireless and phone Bluetooth is enough.
  • Skip it if you need simultaneous audio, active noise cancellation, a wired analog fallback, a premium frame or the strongest possible streaming microphone.
  • Skip it if companion apps and virtual audio routing are deal-breakers.

The Nova 5 earns “for most people” as a balance judgment, not as a claim that it wins every sound, comfort, microphone or durability test. At the right current price and with the correct variant, its combination of wireless flexibility, battery life and software is unusually complete for ordinary gaming.
