Choose the Arctis Nova 7X if Xbox is part of your setup. SteelSeries’ comparison lists the original Nova 7X as compatible with PC, PlayStation 4/5 and Xbox, while the original Nova 7 and Nova 7P are listed for PC and PlayStation 4/5 only. The second difference is the voice-control feature: Nova 7 and 7X provide ChatMix, while Nova 7P provides Sidetone.
All three original models include Bluetooth, can combine Bluetooth with 2.4 GHz dongle audio, and require their own model-specific transmitter. This guide explains the practical consequences, separates the original 2022 family from the newer Gen 2 products, and gives a buying decision for each platform combination.

At a glance: the difference that decides the purchase
The three original headsets share the same family name and core wireless concept, but they are not interchangeable variants. The platform list and the control assigned to the headset are the meaningful distinctions in SteelSeries’ official comparison.
| Model | Officially listed compatibility | Distinct control | Best fit based on those distinctions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arctis Nova 7 | PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5; Xbox is not listed | ChatMix | Someone using PC and/or PlayStation who wants to balance game and chat volume from the headset |
| Arctis Nova 7P | PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5; Xbox is not listed | Sidetone | A PlayStation-focused player who wants to hear their own microphone voice through the headset |
| Arctis Nova 7X | PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox | ChatMix | A player who needs one original Nova 7-family headset to cover Xbox as well as PC or PlayStation |
“Not listed” is important wording: it is not a claim that a particular console connection can never be made through an unofficial workaround. It means SteelSeries’ support comparison does not designate that model as Xbox-compatible. For a normal purchase, treat the official platform list as the compatibility boundary.

Xbox compatibility: why the Nova 7X is the deciding model
If Xbox support is required, select the original Nova 7X. SteelSeries’ support comparison names the 7X as the only one of these three original models with Xbox compatibility. The same comparison lists PC and PlayStation 4/5 support for all three, so the X designation is not a general “better wireless” label; it identifies the platform combination that includes Xbox.
When the 7X is the sensible one-headset choice
The 7X is the practical choice for a household or player who moves between an Xbox and another listed platform. It avoids buying a second headset solely for the Xbox console while retaining the PC and PlayStation entries shown in the support table. Its control assignment is ChatMix, so it suits someone who wants the game-versus-voice balance function rather than the 7P’s Sidetone control.
Why a different transmitter cannot create Xbox support
The headset model, not merely the small USB transmitter, determines Xbox compatibility. SteelSeries states that Xbox compatibility is built into the specific headset and cannot be added to a non-X model by purchasing an X transmitter. A Nova 7 or Nova 7P therefore does not become a Nova 7X when paired with a 7X dongle.
ChatMix and Sidetone: two different controls
The second major choice is how you want to manage voice audio. ChatMix and Sidetone solve different problems, so neither is a universal upgrade over the other.
ChatMix on Nova 7 and Nova 7X
ChatMix balances game audio against voice-chat audio. If teammates are too loud, or game sound is masking a conversation, the control lets you shift the relative mix without treating the two sources as one undifferentiated volume level. Both the original Nova 7 and Nova 7X are assigned ChatMix in SteelSeries’ comparison.
ChatMix is most useful when your priority is an in-game conversation: cooperative missions, competitive team communication, or any session in which you repeatedly adjust the relationship between gameplay and chat. It does not mean the headset has a different Bluetooth capability from the 7P; it is the control-function distinction.
Sidetone on Nova 7P
Sidetone feeds your own microphone signal back into the headset so you can hear your voice while speaking. SteelSeries describes this as hearing your own voice through the headset. That feedback can make it easier to judge speaking volume when the earcups are isolating outside sound or when you are on a long party-chat session.
Recommended Free Tools
Sidetone is not a game-to-chat mixer. It changes how much of your own voice you hear, whereas ChatMix changes the balance between game audio and another person’s voice chat. Choose the 7P for that self-monitoring function, not because the P model is required for PlayStation.
PlayStation compatibility: the 7P is optional, not mandatory
SteelSeries’ official comparison lists PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 compatibility for the Nova 7, Nova 7P and Nova 7X. The “P” in the product name should therefore not be read as “the only PlayStation version.” It identifies a control configuration, while all three are listed for the two PlayStation generations.

Choose Nova 7 for PlayStation with ChatMix
A PlayStation player who wants to adjust the game-and-chat relationship should choose the original Nova 7. This is the non-X model with the same ChatMix assignment found on the 7X, provided Xbox is not part of the requirement.
Choose Nova 7P for PlayStation with Sidetone
A PlayStation player who specifically wants microphone self-monitoring should choose Nova 7P. The model is not a prerequisite for PS4 or PS5; its reason to exist in this comparison is the Sidetone control.
Choose Nova 7X for PlayStation plus Xbox
If the current console is PlayStation but an Xbox is also in the household, or may be added later, the 7X is the only model in this original trio whose official list includes both console families. Its PlayStation compatibility is not sacrificed to gain Xbox support.
PC compatibility and the role of the dongle
PC appears in the official compatibility entry for all three original models. The choice on PC is consequently less about a basic computer connection and more about your console plans, preferred control, and transmitter condition.
Single-platform PC users
If the headset will remain on PC and you prefer balancing game and chat, either the Nova 7 or Nova 7X provides the ChatMix assignment; the 7X only has a clear advantage if Xbox support matters. If you want to hear your own microphone, the Nova 7P is the model in this comparison assigned Sidetone.
PC buyers should verify the transmitter in the box
The wireless link is tied to a dedicated dongle. A complete listing should identify the transmitter that belongs to the exact model being sold. A missing or mismatched transmitter is not a minor cosmetic omission: it can change whether the advertised wireless setup is usable and, in the case of an X transmitter, it still cannot turn another headset into an Xbox model.

All three models combine two wireless paths: a 2.4 GHz connection through the dedicated transmitter and Bluetooth. SteelSeries says the Nova 7 supports both at the same time, allowing audio from two sources to be mixed.
2.4 GHz for the gaming connection
The dongle supplies the headset’s 2.4 GHz wireless connection to the compatible gaming platform or PC. In a typical dual-source use case, game audio travels over this path while a phone supplies a separate Bluetooth stream.
Bluetooth for a phone or second device
Bluetooth can carry audio or a call from a phone while the 2.4 GHz connection remains active. This is useful when you want to stay in a mobile call without removing the headset or abandoning game audio.

Simultaneous audio can be mixed, but microphone transmission has a limit
The two incoming audio streams can be heard together. The microphone, however, does not send your voice to both sources at the same time. When a Bluetooth call is active, the microphone serves that call. Do not assume that speaking into the headset will also transmit to an in-game party or a PC voice application concurrently.

Dongle replacement and secondhand buying
SteelSeries lists separate transmitters for Nova 7, Nova 7P and Nova 7X and says each headset requires its dedicated dongle. The correct replacement is therefore identified by the headset model, not by a generic “Nova” label.
If the original transmitter is missing
- Identify the exact headset printed on the unit or its original documentation: Nova 7, Nova 7P or Nova 7X.
- Match a replacement transmitter to that exact model family.
- Confirm the replacement is intended for the original generation rather than assuming a newer Gen 2 transmitter is interchangeable.
- Do not buy an X transmitter as a way to add Xbox support to a Nova 7 or Nova 7P.
The third step is a generation check, not a claim that every generation combination is incompatible. SteelSeries presents the original and Gen 2 families as separate product lines, so a listing should be verified rather than treated as automatically cross-compatible.
Questions to ask before buying used
- Is the headset explicitly the original Nova 7, 7P or 7X, rather than a Gen 2 model?
- Is the matching wireless transmitter included?
- Does the stated platform list match the model name, especially if Xbox is important?
- Is the control preference ChatMix or Sidetone?
- Are the battery figures being quoted for the original family or for Gen 2?
A seller’s phrase such as “works with all consoles” is not a substitute for checking the model-specific support list. The X designation and the dedicated transmitter requirement are separate facts that both need to be confirmed.
Battery claims and the original-versus-Gen 2 distinction
This comparison concerns the original Nova 7, Nova 7P and Nova 7X family launched in 2022. In its August 23, 2022 launch announcement, SteelSeries advertised up to 38 hours of battery life and said a 15-minute charge provides six hours of use. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements; actual runtime depends on use and settings.
SteelSeries also lists a newer Nova 7 Gen 2 family. Its current product page advertises 50-plus hours of battery life and mobile-app control. That figure belongs to Gen 2 and should not be copied into a specification table for an original Nova 7, 7P or 7X.
How to read a retailer specification
Check the full product name, photographs of the packaging, and the listed generation before comparing battery numbers. A listing that says only “Nova 7” may not make clear whether it is the original family or a Gen 2 product. Keep the generation attached to every runtime claim so a newer advertised figure is not mistaken for an original-model specification.

- Mark every platform you need. Include current and likely systems: PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox.
- If Xbox is on the list, select Nova 7X. The official comparison identifies it as the only Xbox-compatible model in this trio.
- If Xbox is not required, choose the control. Select Nova 7 for ChatMix or Nova 7P for Sidetone.
- For a used headset, verify the dedicated transmitter. A missing transmitter can make the wireless setup incomplete, and a different model’s dongle does not change the headset’s platform identity.
- Check the generation before comparing battery life. Keep the original 2022 claims separate from the current Gen 2 claims.
Decision examples
- PC plus PS5, game/chat balancing: Nova 7 is the direct fit if Xbox is not needed.
- PS5, strong preference for hearing your own voice: Nova 7P matches the Sidetone requirement.
- Xbox and PC: Nova 7X is the model whose official compatibility list covers both.
- Xbox, PS5 and ChatMix: Nova 7X meets both the platform and control requirements.
- PC only, but you may buy an Xbox later: The 7X avoids replacing the headset if that future platform becomes part of the setup.
Common misconceptions to avoid
“The 7P is the PlayStation-only model.”
All three original models are listed for PS4 and PS5. The 7P’s defining distinction in this comparison is Sidetone, not exclusive PlayStation compatibility.
“An X dongle upgrades any Nova 7.”
It does not. SteelSeries says Xbox compatibility is built into the headset model, and each model requires its dedicated transmitter.
“Bluetooth means the microphone works for every connected device at once.”
The headset can receive and mix audio from 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth simultaneously, but an active Bluetooth call takes the microphone for that call rather than transmitting to both sources.
“The 50-plus-hour figure applies to every Nova 7.”
That advertised figure is for the newer Gen 2 family. The original 2022 announcement advertised 38 hours and six hours after a 15-minute charge.

What the official comparison does—and does not—establish
The support materials establish the platform assignments, control differences, simultaneous Bluetooth-and-2.4-GHz behavior, and model-specific transmitter rule described above. They do not provide independent comparative measurements showing that one of the three has better sound quality, microphone quality, wireless range or comfort. No retail price, stock status or regional SKU variation is established here either.
That means a purchase decision should be made from the verified distinctions rather than an assumed performance ranking. If a retailer claims a special regional bundle, a different battery number or compatibility outside the official list, check the exact model and generation before treating that claim as applying to the headset discussed here.
Bottom line by player type
Buy the original Nova 7X when Xbox support is required, including setups that also use PC or PlayStation. It is the only model in this three-way comparison with Xbox in its official compatibility list and it retains the ChatMix control.
Buy the original Nova 7 when you need PC and/or PlayStation compatibility without Xbox and want ChatMix to balance game and voice audio.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuy the original Nova 7P when you need PC and/or PlayStation compatibility without Xbox and your priority is Sidetone so you can hear your own voice. Before ordering or buying used, confirm that the listing is for the original generation and includes the transmitter dedicated to that exact model.
