SteelSeries Sonar no sound? The problem is usually a broken link between the app, Sonar’s virtual channel, and your physical headset or speakers. Fix the path in that order: verify direct Windows playback, correct the app in Volume mixer, match the Sonar channel, then repair devices, drivers, or GG only if needed.
SteelSeries Sonar usually has no sound because the audio path is misrouted. Windows sends an app to a Sonar virtual device such as SteelSeries Sonar – Game or SteelSeries Sonar – Chat, and Sonar then sends that channel to your real headset or speakers. If either assignment points to the wrong device—or if Sonar’s virtual devices are missing—nothing reaches your ears.
Work through these checks in order. The first test separates a hardware problem from a Sonar configuration problem, so you do not waste time reinstalling software unnecessarily.
1. Test the headset or speakers without Sonar
Temporarily bypass Sonar:
- Open Settings > System > Sound in Windows.
- Under Output, select the actual headset, speakers, USB audio device, or monitor you intend to use.
- Raise the Windows volume and check that the device is not muted or disabled.
- Play a video or another known sound source.
If direct Windows output works, your headset and basic audio connection are probably functional. The fault is more likely to be Sonar routing, Windows per-app assignment, or SteelSeries GG. If direct output is also silent, fix the Windows device, connection, driver, or service first; Sonar cannot produce sound through a physical device that Windows cannot use.

Pay particular attention when you have several outputs connected. Windows may select a monitor over HDMI, motherboard audio, a second headset, or a disconnected device instead of the output you are wearing.
2. Check Windows Volume Mixer for the silent app
Windows can send individual applications to a different output from the system default. This is one of the most common reasons a game or Discord appears to be running normally but produces no sound.
- Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, find the game, browser, media player, Discord, Teams, or other silent application.
- Make sure the app is not muted and that its volume is raised.
- Check its Output device.
Use the Sonar virtual device that matches the type of audio:

| Discord, Teams, or voice chat | SteelSeries Sonar – Chat | Your real headset or speakers |
| Browser, music, or video | SteelSeries Sonar – Media or SteelSeries Sonar – Aux | Your real headset or speakers |
If the application was open while you changed Sonar or Windows output settings, close and relaunch it. Some applications retain their old audio endpoint until they restart. An application also needs to be running and producing audio before it appears in some Windows audio controls.
3. Match the app with the correct Sonar channel
Open SteelSeries GG > Sonar. Select the channel corresponding to the silent application—Game, Chat, Media, or Aux—and inspect its playback-device assignment.
The correct arrangement has two separate sides:
- Application-facing side: Windows sends the app to a Sonar virtual device, such as SteelSeries Sonar – Game.
- Physical-output side: Sonar sends that channel to the actual headset or speakers.
For example, a game set to SteelSeries Sonar – Game in Windows must have the Sonar Game channel routed to your physical headset. Selecting a Sonar virtual device as the channel’s physical output creates a loop or an incomplete route; it does not replace the real headset or speakers.

Repeat the check for every channel you use. Game audio can work while Discord remains silent if the Game channel is configured correctly but the Chat channel points to a different device.

In the Sonar mixer, open the device-selection area and choose Device Manager. This controls which physical outputs Sonar can use and which one it chooses first.
- Confirm that your real headset or speakers appear in the eligible output-device list.
- Make sure they are not in the excluded-device list.
- Set the intended device to priority 1 for each relevant Sonar channel.
- Remove unwanted outputs from the eligible list, or exclude them, if Sonar keeps selecting them.
Sonar can switch to a backup device when the preferred device disappears temporarily. That may send sound to an HDMI monitor, another headset, or an output that is connected but not being used. Check Game, Chat, Media, Aux, and Mic as appropriate rather than correcting only the channel that first appeared broken.
A device can return to the list after a driver update or after you connect it to another USB port. Windows may treat the device in the new port as a separate device identity, so revisit the priority list if the problem returns after changing ports.
5. Keep the routing path consistently inside Sonar
Do not mix a Sonar virtual device and a non-Sonar device in the same application-routing path. A reliable setup looks like this:

6. Restart the app, GG, and Windows
After changing the routing, restart the application that was silent. If that does not help, restart SteelSeries GG and then Windows. This refreshes the virtual audio endpoints and forces applications to enumerate the current device list again.
If Sonar will not load at all:
- Open Task Manager.
- End active Sonar-related background processes. This also closes GG.
- Start SteelSeries GG again using Run as administrator.
- Return to Windows Sound settings and check whether the Sonar devices have returned.
VPN or firewall software can sometimes interfere with GG. As a controlled diagnostic test, add GG to the relevant exception list or temporarily stop the conflicting software, then test Sonar. Restore security protection immediately after the test; disabling security software is not a general solution.
7. Repair missing Sonar virtual devices
If SteelSeries Sonar – Game, Chat, Media, or Aux does not appear in Windows Sound or Volume Mixer, the virtual-device installation may be damaged or not running.
Use this repair sequence:
- Close SteelSeries GG completely.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch GG with Run as administrator.
- Check Settings > System > Sound and Volume mixer again.
- If the Sonar devices are still absent, uninstall SteelSeries GG.
- Restart Windows.
- Download and install the current GG package from SteelSeries.
- Restart again and check for the virtual devices.
Do not reinstall merely because one game is silent while the Sonar devices are present. First correct the Windows app output and Sonar channel routing. Reinstallation is more appropriate when the virtual devices are missing, GG repeatedly fails to load, or the configuration appears damaged.
8. Restart Windows audio services
If several applications are silent, or if the device appears in Windows but produces no sound, restart the core audio services:
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Audio.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
- Find Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and restart it as well if available.
- Test Windows output, then test Sonar again.
Service restarts can interrupt audio for a few seconds. If the services will not start or repeatedly stop, the issue is broader than Sonar and may involve Windows files, drivers, or a recent system change.

9. Update the audio driver and disable enhancements
Windows or headset-driver changes can leave an output visible but unusable. Open Device Manager, expand the relevant audio-device categories, and use the device’s driver update option. Restart Windows after a driver change.
Recommended Free Tools
Also test with Windows audio enhancements disabled:
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the physical output device.
- Find the device’s audio-enhancement setting.
- Turn enhancements off temporarily and test playback.
Enhancements can conflict with playback processing. If disabling them restores sound, leave them off while testing Sonar, then re-enable them one at a time if you need a particular effect.
10. Check Bluetooth and platform limitations
Sonar is a Windows application. It is not currently available for other operating systems or consoles. SteelSeries also states that a device recognized by Windows over Bluetooth will not be seen by Sonar. Therefore, a Bluetooth-only connection can explain why the headset works in some Windows contexts but is absent from Sonar’s physical-device list.
On a Windows PC, test a supported wired, USB, or wireless-dongle connection if your headset provides one. This is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee that every headset supports every connection mode. If the device appears in Sonar after changing connection method, the Bluetooth path—not necessarily the headset itself—was the limiting factor.
11. Reinstall GG only when the evidence points there
A complete SteelSeries GG reinstall is justified when:

What to send SteelSeries Support
If none of the steps works, provide enough detail for support to distinguish a routing issue from a device or installation issue:
- Windows version;
- SteelSeries GG version;
- headset or speaker model;
- connection type: 3.5 mm, USB, wireless dongle, or Bluetooth;
- whether direct Windows output works without Sonar;
- which channels are silent: Game, Chat, Media, Aux, or Mic;
- whether the Sonar virtual devices appear in Windows;
- screenshots of Windows Sound, Volume mixer, and Sonar Device Manager; and
- what changed immediately before the failure, such as a Windows update, driver update, USB-port change, or new audio device.
Fastest troubleshooting order
- Play sound directly through the real headset or speakers in Windows.
- Check the silent app’s mute, volume, and output in Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Assign the app to the matching Sonar virtual device.
- Route that Sonar channel to the real physical output.
- Set the physical output to priority 1 in Sonar Device Manager.
- Restart the app, GG, and Windows.
- Restart Windows Audio services, update drivers, and test with enhancements off.
- Repair missing Sonar virtual devices or reinstall GG if necessary.
- Contact SteelSeries Support with configuration details and screenshots.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does SteelSeries Sonar work with Bluetooth headsets?
Sonar is a Windows-only application, and SteelSeries states that a device recognized by Windows over Bluetooth will not be seen by Sonar. If possible, test the headset with a supported wired, USB, or wireless-dongle connection. Compatibility varies by headset and connection mode.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why do Sonar devices appear but still produce no sound?
Yes, Sonar’s virtual devices can appear in Windows even when no physical output is selected correctly. In GG, open Sonar and route the relevant Game, Chat, Media, or Aux channel to the actual headset or speakers—not to another Sonar virtual device.
How can I tell whether the problem is Sonar or my headset?
Use Windows directly first: open Settings > System > Sound and select the real headset or speakers. If direct playback works, correct the app’s output in Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer and then match it to the corresponding Sonar channel. If direct playback fails, troubleshoot Windows or the hardware before Sonar.
What should I do if SteelSeries Sonar – Game or Chat is missing?
Close GG, restart Windows, and launch GG with Run as administrator. If the virtual devices remain missing, uninstall GG, restart, install the current GG package, and restart again. Save or screenshot custom settings and macros first because a reinstall can reset them.
The Bottom Line
The quickest fix is usually to make the routing consistent: set the game or chat app to the matching SteelSeries Sonar virtual device in Windows, then set that Sonar channel to your real headset or speakers. If direct Windows playback also fails, troubleshoot the physical device, Bluetooth or USB connection, driver, or Windows audio services before reinstalling GG.
