Steep may launch in limited Offline Mode, where free roam can remain available but online-dependent progression, multiplayer features, events, or parts of the introduction may not work.
Check for Ubisoft maintenance or an outage before reinstalling the game or changing advanced network settings. The code has appeared during temporary service interruptions, including a documented PC maintenance incident, so it does not by itself prove that your installation is damaged or that Steep’s servers have permanently closed.
What does DE-005-03 mean?
The error is associated with a message saying that Steep’s servers are unavailable and that the game can continue in Offline Mode. The code identifies a failure to reach the game’s online services, but it does not identify the exact cause.
Possible causes include:
- Planned Ubisoft maintenance.
- An unplanned Ubisoft or Steep service outage.
- Regional routing or ISP problems.
- Ubisoft Connect authentication or account-linking errors.
- Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation Network, or Xbox network problems.
- A router, DNS, NAT, firewall, VPN, or antivirus restriction.
- Damaged or incomplete local game files.
Steep has displayed this code in reports spanning PC and consoles, including reports dating back to 2016. A Ubisoft developer also confirmed that ongoing PC maintenance caused an incident in March 2025. See the developer’s Steam response.

Are Steep’s servers down?
DE-005-03 does not prove that Steep’s servers are permanently shut down. It has occurred during temporary maintenance and intermittent connection failures, and the available evidence does not support a permanent-closure conclusion.
Because service status changes over time, check Ubisoft Help and the status page or support notices for the current incident. Also check the relevant PlayStation Network, Xbox Network, Steam, or Epic service status. Recent reports from other Steep players can reveal a widespread problem, but community posts are not an official confirmation.

What Offline Mode allows
Offline Mode is not a complete fix. Reports describe free roam being available while online-dependent content, progression, multiplayer, and portions of the introduction remain blocked. The exact behavior can vary by platform, account state, and where you are in the game.

If Steep cannot complete its introduction without contacting its services, repeatedly restarting the game in Offline Mode will not make that online-dependent step work. Restore the connection instead.

Quick, low-risk fixes
- Quit Steep completely. Do not leave it suspended or running in the background.
- Restart the PC or console. Relaunch the game after the platform reconnects.
- Restart Ubisoft Connect on PC. Also restart Steam or Epic Games Launcher if that is where you own the game.
- Sign out and back into Ubisoft Connect. Confirm that the correct Ubisoft account is linked to your storefront or console account.
- Restart your modem or router. Wait for the connection to return fully before launching Steep.
- Install pending updates. Check Steep, Ubisoft Connect, the platform launcher, and the console or PC operating system.
- Retry later if maintenance is reported. Local troubleshooting cannot repair a Ubisoft-side outage.
PC fixes for DE-005-03
Confirm the Ubisoft account connection
Sign out of Ubisoft Connect, close it completely, reopen it, and sign in again. Confirm that your Steam or Epic account is linked to the Ubisoft account that owns or accesses Steep. Complete any requested email verification and check that the account is not restricted from online services.
Account verification and reconnecting accounts have helped some players, but these are community-reported remedies rather than guaranteed fixes.

Verify the game files
File verification is useful when the error affects only one computer or follows an interrupted update. It is unlikely to help during confirmed maintenance.
Steam:
- Open Library.
- Right-click Steep and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
Epic Games Store:
- Open your Library.
- Open the three-dot menu for Steep.
- Select Manage, then Verify.
In Ubisoft Connect, use the installed game’s repair or file-verification option if it is available. Launcher labels can change between versions.

- Allow Ubisoft Connect and Steep through Windows Firewall.
- Check whether antivirus or security software is blocking the launcher.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or proxy for testing.
- Check the router’s NAT status and parental-control restrictions.
- Prefer a wired connection where practical.
Do not assume that changing DNS, opening a particular port, or changing NAT settings is a universal solution. The available evidence does not establish one specific DNS server or port configuration as a reliable DE-005-03 fix.

PlayStation and Xbox checks
- Confirm that PlayStation Network or Xbox Network is online.
- Restart the console fully rather than only resuming the game.
- Check for console, game, and platform-service updates.
- Confirm that the correct Ubisoft account is linked to the console account.
- Check the console’s NAT status and router restrictions.
- Confirm any platform subscription requirement for the online features you are trying to use.
Reports exist on PlayStation and Xbox as well as PC, but available features and the exact effect of Offline Mode can differ by platform.

Try a different network, such as a mobile hotspot, only as a diagnostic test. If Steep works there, the original router, ISP route, NAT, DNS, or firewall is a likely contributor. If it fails on both connections, a Ubisoft-side, platform-side, or account issue becomes more likely.
A hotspot is not necessarily a good permanent workaround: it may have data costs, higher latency, carrier restrictions, or an unsuitable NAT type. Restore your normal network settings after testing.

What not to do
- Do not repeatedly reinstall Steep during an outage. Reinstallation cannot repair unavailable Ubisoft services.
- Do not treat Offline Mode as full functionality. It may still block progression, multiplayer, events, or the introduction.
- Do not delete saved data as a first step. Community discussions warn that this can remove progress, and it is not a routine fix for a server-connection error.
- Do not assume a successful reconnect proves your files were corrupt. Temporary outages can resolve while you are troubleshooting.
If Ubisoft or platform support specifically recommends deleting local data, first confirm exactly what will be removed and whether your progress is backed up or synchronized.
When to contact Ubisoft Support
Contact Ubisoft Support when the service appears operational but DE-005-03 persists after restarting, reauthenticating, testing the network, and verifying PC files.
Include:
- The exact code and full message.
- Your platform and storefront.
- Your country or region.
- Whether the game previously worked or is newly installed.
- When the problem began.
- A screenshot or video of the error.
- Whether other online games work.
- Whether another network produced the same result.
- Relevant Ubisoft-account and platform-linking details.
Never send your password, authentication codes, or other secret account credentials.
Bottom line
DE-005-03 is primarily an online-service connection error, not a diagnosis of corrupted saves or a permanently closed game. Check Ubisoft and platform status first. If an outage or maintenance event is affecting other players, waiting is the correct fix. If services appear healthy, work through account authentication, restarts, network testing, file verification, and firewall or NAT checks in that order.
