STEINS;GATE is widely praised for its time-travel story and cast, but it is a long, text-led visual novel rather than an action game. It is a strong fit if you enjoy patient science-fiction storytelling and branching routes; the slow stretches and extensive reading are the main reasons it may not work for everyone. This guide covers the original visual novel, not the anime, and distinguishes it from STEINS;GATE ELITE.
What is STEINS;GATE?
STEINS;GATE is a science-fiction visual novel and the second game in the Science Adventure series. The original game was released in Japan in October 2009. The official franchise page credits 5pb. and Nitroplus as developers, Chiyomaru Shikura with planning and the original concept, Naotaka Hayashi with the scenario, and Bio Shimokura with scenario-structure assistance. The official franchise page describes its premise with the phrase “99% science and 1% fantasy”—a positioning line, not a guarantee of scientific accuracy.

The story follows technology-minded students whose modified microwave lets them send messages to the past. Their experiments draw them into a conspiracy involving SERN and the future-claiming John Titor. You experience events through Rintaro’s phone: incoming calls and messages can be answered or ignored, and those decisions can affect story outcomes. The game’s interaction is meaningful, but it is not constant; much of the experience is reading dialogue and advancing text. Steam’s description characterizes it as a time-travel science-fiction interactive visual novel.
What do reviews praise, and what do they criticize?
Story, characters, and time-travel plotting
The reviewed sources are strongly positive overall, particularly about the story, characters, and way the time-travel premise is built into the narrative. The phone system gives the reader a role in shaping outcomes without turning the game into a conventional action title. A Metacritic review of the PlayStation Vita release praised its use of game mechanics to tell a story.

Reading load and pacing
The trade-off is the format itself: conversations can run for long stretches with little input beyond advancing text. One Metacritic review specifically noted that the game can go hours with limited interaction. Steam advertises 30–50 hours of reading time, while the official English site describes it as “Over 30 hours of story with multiple paths and six endings!” These are publisher and platform descriptions, not independently timed play data.
That makes the game a better match for readers seeking an extended narrative and branching outcomes than for players looking for frequent action, rapid pacing, or constant mechanical challenge.

- Characters, backgrounds, and pivotal moments have all been updated from scratch. There are twice the amount of still images and 20% more background graphics compared to the original version.
- Character designer huke returns with redesigned outfits and accessories that bring a contemporary flair to the cast while Akihabara has been recreated with stunning realism and depth, including new scenes. Rush, and make full use of the orbment system for access to Arts.
- Uses E-mote, which has been well-received in Anonymous;Code. Smooth animations and rich expressions breathe new life to beloved characters.
- Series composer Takeshi Abo has remade the soundtrack, and the original voice actors have returned to re-record all in-game voices in Japanese.
- In addition to new dialogue and narrative text, a new route has been added with an additional ending
How should you read the review scores?
Scores refer to particular editions, platforms, and samples; they are snapshots, not timeless ratings for every version.
| Source and version | Score or review snapshot | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Metacritic, PlayStation Vita release | 83 Metascore from 16 critic reviews; 8.9 user score from 232 ratings, as listed when accessed in 2026 | A Vita-specific aggregate and user-rating sample, not a score for every platform or for ELITE. |
| Steam, original visual novel listing | 95% positive from 5,506 English reviews; 96% positive from 263 recent reviews, checked October 8, 2026 | Changeable Steam review snapshots; the recent-review figure is a separate, smaller sample. The store module also displayed an 87 Metacritic score at that check. |
Steam’s page also reproduces positive review excerpts credited to publications including Destructoid and Kotaku. Those are individual excerpts displayed on the store page, not separate evidence that every review source agrees.

- Steins;Gate 0 continues the time travelling theme - but adds artificial intelligence as its central hook
- Help a group of young students bend time to their will and prevent the onset of World War 3
- Beautiful artwork and engaging story for an unforgettable experience
- Tells the story of an 'Alternate Worldline' - what happens if players failed the original story
- Interact with the story using your smart phone - answering (or not!) your phone, and your responses, will determine the outcome to the story
Original STEINS;GATE or STEINS;GATE ELITE?
The core distinction is presentation. The original uses character art and still images, with choices triggered through Rintaro’s phone. ELITE reworks the presentation around animation from the television series and adds animated sequences for certain endings, according to publisher Spike Chunsoft. It is a separate edition, not simply a platform name for the original.
| Edition | Presentation | Platform-specific additions listed by publisher |
|---|---|---|
| Original STEINS;GATE | Character art and still images; phone-triggered choices | Not stated on the cited official sources for this comparison. |
| STEINS;GATE ELITE | Presentation built around animation from the television series, including new animated sequences for certain endings | Linear Bounded Phenogram on PS4 and Steam; the 8-bit adventure version on Switch. Check the edition and region listing for exact contents. |
Spike Chunsoft lists ELITE for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam. The extras differ by platform, so do not assume a bonus included with one version is included with another. The central choice is whether you prefer the original still-image presentation or an anime-based presentation; bonus stories can also matter if you already know which platform you want.

Is it approachable for visual-novel newcomers?
It can be approachable if you are comfortable with a reading-heavy game and willing to let a science-fiction story establish its characters and premise before expecting more interaction. The phone choices offer a simple interface for influencing routes, but they do not change the basic fact that extended reading is the main activity. A newcomer who expects frequent gameplay may find the pace slow; one who enjoys long-form fiction may find that trade-off worthwhile.
Language comfort matters too. A March 2019 review of the Nintendo Switch version of ELITE by Meristation highlighted long conversations and the need for strong English comprehension, while noting that its animated presentation could appeal to people who came to the franchise through the anime. That is a reviewer’s judgment about the Switch edition, not a universal verdict on the original game. Read the Meristation review.

Which version should you choose?
- Choose the original if you want the still-image presentation and the original visual-novel format.
- Choose ELITE if you prefer its anime-based presentation, or if one of its platform-specific additions is important to you.
- Choose by platform only after checking the edition details if you want Linear Bounded Phenogram or the 8-bit adventure version, because the publisher lists these additions for different platforms.
- Look closely at the reading commitment if you are new to visual novels: this is suited to extended reading and patient pacing, not frequent action.
The original franchise has also expanded into anime, theatrical, stage, manga, novelization, and sequel-game adaptations, as listed by the official franchise page. Those adaptations are distinct from the original game and should not be conflated with its review scores.
