Stendhal was the pen name of French writer Henri Marie Beyle (1783–1842). Start with The Red and the Black (1830) or The Charterhouse of Parma (1839), the two novels most often associated with him today. His work also grew out of a life that spanned government service, travel, and writing about Italian art and culture.
Who was Stendhal?
Henri Marie Beyle was born in Grenoble in 1783 and wrote under the name Stendhal. He followed Napoleon’s campaigns from 1800, later lived in Italy, and wrote about Italian painting, music, and travel. After the 1830 revolution, he was appointed consul at Civitavecchia. He died following a stroke in 1842. Penguin Random House’s biography also places fiction alongside this varied career.
Which books is Stendhal known for?
Stendhal’s two best-known novels are The Red and the Black (Le Rouge et le noir), published in 1830, and The Charterhouse of Parma (La Chartreuse de Parme), published in 1839. Routledge identifies these as his two most widely read novels and devotes a critical study to their reception and later interpretation. Roger Pearson’s study is a route into that critical history.
Where should you start with Stendhal?
Choose between the two central novels by the kind of reading you want: The Red and the Black is the earlier starting point, while The Charterhouse of Parma offers a novel Cambridge scholarship describes as portraying contemporary Italy for contemporary French readers. Both are dedicated to “the happy few,” an English phrase retained in the original. The available evidence supports these broad points of orientation, rather than a detailed plot-by-plot ranking.

A documented edition of The Charterhouse of Parma
For a concrete edition, Penguin Classics lists John Sturrock’s translation of The Charterhouse of Parma (ISBN 9780140449662) as a 560-page paperback published January 19, 2007. Check the publisher listing for current availability and listing details.
What else did Stendhal write?
His work was not limited to novels. Other titles named in the publisher biography include De l’amour, Racine et Shakespeare, and Lucien Leuwen; some of his autobiographical writings appeared later. Together with his writing on Italy, these works show why Stendhal is better understood as a writer of fiction, criticism, travel, and cultural observation than as the author of two novels alone.
Rank #2
Why was Stendhal’s reputation delayed?
Stendhal’s later prominence contrasts with his reception during his lifetime. Penguin Random House’s biography says, “None of his published works was received with any great understanding during his lifetime.” Routledge’s study traces responses to the two major novels from the nineteenth century through later readings. That history supports describing his critical reputation as developing beyond the reception he received while alive, without implying a specific change in readership.
