sti.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file, not a game DLL or Visual C++ runtime. If sti.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or reports a bad image, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement.
The file is the Still Image Devices client DLL, part of Microsoft’s Still Image Technology architecture. Scanners, cameras, TWAIN or ISIS acquisition software, and imaging applications can use this Windows layer for device access and notifications. Microsoft’s overview explains how STI connects applications with vendor-supplied imaging drivers and Windows device components.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes, plus a restart
This is the safest first fix on Windows 10 and Windows 11. It restores protected Windows components from the component store and then checks system files, including sti.dll.
1. Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not require it.
An interrupted update, disk problem, or cleanup utility can leave a protected component damaged. Updating and restarting removes a pending servicing problem before you run repairs.

2. Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to reach completion. DISM may appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window while it is working.
A successful result says that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, run Windows Update again. You can also use a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid repair source matching your Windows version and architecture. Microsoft documents this process in its repair a Windows image guidance.
3. Run System File Checker
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
SFC checks protected files against the Windows component store. Its result matters:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows files look intact. Continue with the application, driver, and architecture checks below.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and launch the scanner or imaging program again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, inspect
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log, check disk health, or consider an in-place Windows repair.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM can provide the repair files SFC needs. See Microsoft’s System File Checker repair instructions.
If repeatedly running DISM and SFC leaves you guessing about what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the issues involved; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the correct repair source for sti.dll.
Restart after SFC completes, then test the application that produced the error.
Fix 2: Confirm that Windows is loading the correct file
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
On a normal supported Windows client, the protected copies are normally located here:

C:WindowsSystem32sti.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64sti.dll
System32 and SysWOW64 do not simply mean “64-bit” and “32-bit” in every situation. Windows file-system redirection determines what a process sees. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application commonly accesses the 32-bit system component through the SysWOW64 view. Microsoft documents this behavior in its WOW64 file-system redirector documentation.
To check the files:
- Press Windows + E.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Look for
sti.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also check
%windir%SysWOW64. - Right-click the file, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures.
A genuine Windows copy should identify Microsoft as the signer. Do not replace it merely because its size or version differs from an online listing. File versions vary by Windows build, architecture, servicing branch, and update level.
A copy found in a game, scanner application, download, or temporary folder deserves more caution. The application may be loading that private copy instead of the Windows copy, or the file may be an attempted DLL sideload. Use the application’s official repair or reinstall process rather than copying files between directories.
Fix 3: Repair the application that reports the error
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
If only one scanner utility, imaging program, or older game reports sti.dll, the Windows component may be intact. The failing program could have a damaged installation, an incompatible private dependency, or an incomplete scanner integration.
Work through these steps:
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application and test it.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help:
- Return to the application’s entry in Installed apps.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer’s official site or use the original installation media.
- Install the correct current build.
- Restart again before testing the scanner or camera.
For a game or launcher, use its built-in Verify files, Verify integrity, or equivalent command before reinstalling. That process repairs the program’s own files, not a missing Windows system component.
If the program still fails, identify the exact executable named in the error. A “sti.dll was not found” message can be indirect: a dependency of sti.dll, rather than sti.dll itself, may be the module that cannot load.
Fix 4: Check whether Windows Server is missing imaging components

A Windows Server installation is not the same environment as Windows 10 or Windows 11. Older Server installations may lack client-oriented imaging components, and Server Core intentionally provides a smaller environment without the full desktop feature set.

On versions that support the PowerShell feature command, an administrator can run:
Install-WindowsFeature Desktop-Experience
Desktop Experience availability differs between Server generations. Microsoft documents the older feature model in its Desktop Experience overview.
For newer releases, check whether the server was installed as Server Core or Server with Desktop Experience. Microsoft states that these installation choices generally cannot be converted after installation. If the imaging application requires components unavailable on Server Core, use a supported Desktop Experience installation or an application designed for Server Core. See Microsoft’s Server Core and Desktop Experience installation options.
Fix 5: Reinstall the scanner or camera driver
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
sti.dll can be intact while the vendor’s scanner or camera driver is broken. This is especially likely when the error appears only during device detection, scanning, camera import, or a device-button event.
Remove the device
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected scanner or camera.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Enable Attempt to remove the driver for this device if Windows offers that option.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
Install the correct driver
- Obtain the driver from the scanner or camera manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Match the driver to your Windows edition and architecture.
- Disconnect the device if the installer requests it.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Reconnect the device only when instructed.
- Open Device Manager and confirm that the device appears without a warning icon.
- Test the vendor application and Windows scanning features.
Microsoft describes STI as a combination of Windows components and vendor-supplied user-mode minidrivers, so reinstalling the vendor layer can fix a device failure without replacing sti.dll.
If manually identifying an outdated scanner driver is taking longer than expected, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while installing updates requires the full version. It is optional, and the scanner manufacturer’s official driver remains the preferred source.
Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application do not use identical dependency paths. A wrong-architecture DLL or a file copied from a different Windows release can trigger:
Rank #4
- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
- “The application was unable to start correctly”
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located”
- Error
0xC000007B
That “bad image” condition can indicate a damaged file, an architecture mismatch, or an invalid dependency. It does not prove that sti.dll alone is defective.
Recommended Free Tools
Check the application’s architecture in its documentation or installer. Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32, copy a 64-bit file into an application folder, or replace a Windows file with a version from another computer. Do not assume that Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET will repair sti.dll; it is a Windows imaging component, not one of those runtimes.
Fix 7: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may quarantine a file after a detection, cleanup operation, or false positive.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and type
Windows Security. - Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
sti.dll. - Do not restore the file automatically.
- First verify the file’s location and Microsoft digital signature.
- If the detection is not clearly a false positive, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
- If malware is suspected, run Microsoft Defender Offline from Scan options.
Afterward, repair Windows with DISM and SFC. A file outside the normal Windows directories should be treated carefully because DLL search behavior can allow an application-directory copy to be loaded before the protected system copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 sti.dll is usually the wrong fix
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide a self-registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Running:
regsvr32 sti.dll
against a system DLL that does not expose the required registration function can simply produce a registration error. It does not restore a missing Windows component, repair a bad dependency, or install a scanner driver. Microsoft explains this distinction in its self-registration documentation and Regsvr32 troubleshooting guide.
Do not download sti.dll from random DLL sites
A standalone DLL download can be:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong architecture
- Unsigned or modified
- Incompatible with the component store
- A malware replacement
- Unable to resolve the dependency that caused the original error
There is no legitimate standalone Microsoft sti.dll redistributable. The safe repair sources are Windows Update, DISM using Windows installation media, the existing Windows component store, and the applicable Windows Server feature. For the application and scanner layer, use the program developer’s or hardware manufacturer’s official installer.

FAQ
Is sti.dll a third-party application file?
No. sti.dll is a Microsoft Windows system DLL for the Still Image Devices client. An application can still fail because its own scanner driver, TWAIN component, or private dependency is damaged.
Where should sti.dll be?
Common protected locations are %SystemRoot%System32 and, on 64-bit Windows, %SystemRoot%SysWOW64. Windows redirection determines which architecture a process sees.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not as a first fix. sti.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC, then check the application and device driver.
Why does only one program report the error?
That program may have a damaged installation, use a private copy, require a missing dependency, or be incompatible with the installed scanner driver. Repair the application before assuming Windows is missing the file.
Can I manually replace sti.dll?
Only as an advanced Windows repair procedure using a verified copy from the same Windows build and architecture. DISM and SFC are safer and should come first.
What if DISM and SFC do not fix it?
Check CBS.log, verify disk health, retry in Safe Mode where appropriate, and use System Restore if the failure began after a known change. If corruption persists, an in-place Windows repair installation may be necessary.
