stlport_vc10.5.2.dll Errors: Trace and Restore the App

Length9 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing Windows, answer three questions:

  • Which program or game shows the error? Write down its name and the exact executable being launched.
  • When did it begin? Common triggers include an update, mod installation, disk cleanup, antivirus quarantine, or moving the application folder.
  • Is the program 32-bit or 64-bit? stlport_vc10.5.2.dll is reported as a 32-bit STLport library. A 32-bit application normally needs the 32-bit copy supplied with that application, even on 64-bit Windows.

The safest repair is to restore the file through the program’s own launcher, repair option, or official installer. Do not start by copying a downloaded DLL into System32.

What stlport_vc10.5.2.dll is

stlport_vc10.5.2.dll is an application library associated with STLport, a C++ standard-library implementation. It is not identified as a Windows component, and there is no reason to treat it as a file that belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Public file catalogues report this filename as a 32-bit build, with reported STLport version metadata of 5.2.1.0 and a size of approximately 741,888 bytes. Those are catalogue-reported properties, not authenticated properties of every copy using this filename. The vc10 portion suggests a Visual C++ 10-era build, but installing Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 does not automatically provide this STLport DLL.

The same filename can be packaged with different applications. It has appeared in software distributions associated with Train Simulator or RailWorks and Endless Space, but that does not prove either program is the one failing on your computer. The folder containing the executable is the important clue.

Fix 1: Repair or verify the affected application

This is the fastest and most likely fix.

For a Steam game

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Right-click the affected game.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Open Installed Files.
  6. Select Verify integrity of game files.
  7. Wait for Steam to finish.
  8. Restart Steam and launch the game again.

Steam should replace missing or damaged files from its managed installation. If the error disappears, do not manually add another copy of the DLL.

For another launcher

Open the launcher and look for a command named Repair, Scan and repair, Verify, or Check files. Run it while the launcher is logged into the account that owns the application.

If the program was installed from a disc, a vendor installer, or a company download, run the original installer again and choose Repair when offered. If there is no repair option:

  1. Back up saved games or application data.
  2. Uninstall the affected program from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or the store where you obtained it.
  5. Launch it once before restoring mods or custom files.

Check the shortcut before reinstalling

An old shortcut can point to a removed or migrated installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click the shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Check Target and Start in.
  4. Confirm that the target executable is inside the installation you just repaired.
  5. Select Open File Location if available.
  6. Launch the executable from that folder once.

If the repaired installation works directly but the shortcut does not, replace the shortcut rather than changing Windows DLL folders.

Fix 2: Find which application owns the file

If you do not know which program is affected, use the error window and the folder path together.

  1. Note the program name in the title bar or message.
  2. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  3. Select Details.
  4. Look for the program’s executable while it is attempting to start.
  5. Right-click it and select Open file location.

You can also search File Explorer for stlport_vc10.5.2.dll. A copy beside an application executable is strong evidence that the application owns it. Check:

  • The folder containing the DLL
  • The executable beside it
  • The application’s installer logs
  • Windows Security quarantine history
  • The shortcut target
  • Application logs and crash reports

Do not assume that the first search result is the correct copy. Multiple applications can ship similarly named STLport files, and a 32-bit copy is not interchangeable with an x64 build.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may remove or quarantine an application file after an update, mod installation, or scan.

Windows Security

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security.
  3. Select Windows Security.
  4. Open Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Look for an event involving the affected application or DLL.

Restore the file only when all of these are true:

  • You recognize the application.
  • The application came from a trusted official source.
  • The quarantine event corresponds to the missing-file error.
  • You have scanned the complete installation and system.

If you are uncertain, do not restore the file. Remove the affected application and reinstall it from its official source. A clean reinstall is safer than repeatedly restoring a possibly modified DLL.

Fix 4: Install the runtime dependency the application actually needs

A message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL is absent. Windows may have found stlport_vc10.5.2.dll but failed to load another DLL that it depends on.

First repair the owning application. Then check the Microsoft runtime requirements documented by that application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads explain which packages are available. If the program is 32-bit, install the x86 runtime package even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing a newer runtime does not universally replace every older runtime, so an older application may require a specific supported package.

The Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable package is relevant only if the application requires it. It does not install stlport_vc10.5.2.dll.

After installing the required runtime:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Run the application’s file verification or repair again.
  3. Launch the application from its installation folder.
  4. If the same error remains, continue with dependency and application repair rather than copying another DLL.

Fix 5: Undo a mod, cleanup, or manual file move

If the error started after installing a mod, using a cleanup utility, or moving the application:

  1. Remove the most recent mod or add-on.
  2. Restore files from the mod manager’s backup if one exists.
  3. Run the launcher’s verification command.
  4. If verification cannot restore the installation, uninstall and reinstall the application.
  5. Add mods back one at a time, launching the program after each change.

Do not copy a replacement from another game. Even when the filenames match, the build, architecture, compiler runtime, and expected dependencies may differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Check Windows components, but do not expect them to restore this DLL

Because this is an application-local library, Windows component repair is lower priority. Use it when other Windows programs also fail, system files are damaged, or the problem began after a broader Windows issue.

Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Run these commands in this order:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Wait for each command to finish before starting the next. Restart Windows afterward.

Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it either found no integrity violations or repaired damaged files. These commands repair protected Windows components. They are not a normal source for a third-party STLport DLL.

If repeated manual SFC and DISM runs leave you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when this DLL belongs to that program.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the evidence points there

A graphics, storage, or chipset driver is not a normal source of stlport_vc10.5.2.dll. Consider driver work only if the application also crashes with graphics, display, audio, or device errors.

To check manually:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category for the suspected device.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For graphics hardware, use the GPU manufacturer’s official support page when Windows Update does not provide the required driver. Avoid driver packages from unrelated download sites.

When several devices need checking, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation requires the full version. A driver update will not replace the application’s STLport file, so repair the owning program if the DLL error remains.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply

Do not run regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair command. It is intended for libraries that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM components. An ordinary C++ runtime library such as STLport is not normally registered this way.

Using the wrong regsvr32 version can also produce a misleading architecture error. If the application’s official documentation explicitly says that a component must be registered, follow that documentation. Otherwise, verify or reinstall the application instead.

Why System32 and SysWOW64 are the wrong destination

Windows normally searches the application directory before system locations. Microsoft’s DLL search order documentation and DLL deployment guidance support keeping application DLLs with the application that uses them.

Copying this file into System32 or SysWOW64 can:

  • Leave the original application incomplete
  • Create conflicts between unrelated programs
  • Cause Windows to load the wrong version
  • Introduce permission and security problems
  • Hide the real missing dependency

A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows should normally use its own application-local files and 32-bit dependencies. Do not assume that SysWOW64 is the correct manual destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not download a random replacement DLL

Generic DLL download pages can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a file that does not match the application’s dependencies. Even a genuine-looking copy may fail because the application needs a companion runtime or a particular version.

Use these sources instead:

  • The application’s official installer or repair feature
  • The official game launcher or store verification process
  • Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable documentation
  • Windows Security quarantine and scan results

If you already downloaded a replacement, delete it, run a security scan, and restore the application through its official installer.

Advanced checks when the error persists

If verification and reinstalling do not help:

  1. Confirm the exact executable producing the message.
  2. Check whether an old shortcut launches a second installation.
  3. Review Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application for the failure time.
  4. Check the application’s own logs.
  5. Look for a second copy of the DLL in an unexpected folder.
  6. Temporarily remove third-party mods and overlays.
  7. Confirm that antivirus is not quarantining the file again.
  8. Check whether the application is 32-bit and whether its supplied DLL is also 32-bit.
  9. Reinstall to a new folder if the existing installation may have inherited damaged permissions.
  10. Run a Microsoft Defender scan if copies appeared in temporary or unrelated directories.

If every reinstall fails, the application may be launching from a different path than expected, or another dependency may be missing. The exact executable and full error text matter more than the filename alone.

Common error messages

FAQ

Is stlport_vc10.5.2.dll part of Windows?

No evidence identifies it as a Windows system DLL. Treat it as a private dependency of the application that installed it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which program installed it?

The filename is reusable and is not tied to one universal product. Identify the owning application from the error window, file location, shortcut target, installer records, or quarantine history.

Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

Public metadata identifies this exact filename as 32-bit. A similarly named x64 STLport file is a separate build and is not interchangeable.

Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?

Only if the application is missing a Microsoft runtime dependency. Visual C++ Redistributable does not itself supply this STLport DLL.

Should I register it with regsvr32?

Normally no. Repair or reinstall the application instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I copy it from another computer?

Only when it is a known-good copy from the same application and matching installation. The safer method is to let the official installer or launcher restore it.

What if the file exists but Windows still reports it as missing?

A dependent DLL may be missing, the copy may be damaged, the architecture may be wrong, or the application may be loading another installation. Verify the application and inspect its exact launch path.
