If Windows says that stlport_vc745.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the application that needs stlport_vc745.dll is usually incomplete or damaged. The stlport_vc745.dll error is normally fixed by repairing or reinstalling that specific legacy program, not by copying a replacement into a Windows system folder.

Messages you may see

Common messages include:

  • “The program can’t start because stlport_vc745.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “This application failed to start because stlport_vc745.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading stlport_vc745.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Failed to load stlport_vc745.dll.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because stlport_vc745.dll was not found.”
  • “stlport_vc745.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The wording does not identify the parent application. Note the executable name shown in the error, the shortcut you used, or the game launcher that displayed it before continuing.

The 60-second answer

  1. Identify the program that produces the error.
  2. Open that program’s installation folder and check whether stlport_vc745.dll is beside its executable.
  3. Use the program’s Repair, Verify, or Restore function.
  4. If no repair option exists, reinstall it from the original installer, official publisher, or official store library.
  5. Check Windows Security for quarantine.
  6. Do not download a random DLL and place it in System32 or SysWOW64.

stlport_vc745.dll is an old application-local DLL associated with STLport, an alternative C++ Standard Template Library implementation. It is not a normal Windows component, DirectX file, .NET file, or file supplied by the current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.

What owns stlport_vc745.dll

The filename is associated with older 32-bit Windows software built with STLport. It has appeared with older OpenOffice.org releases and SDK combinations, older PC games such as The Great Art Race and Port Royale 2, and other legacy applications.

Those examples do not prove that every release used the same binary. The error itself is not enough to identify the correct owner. Several programs can contain a file with the same name, while requiring different builds or supporting files.

To identify the application:

  1. Read the title bar or full error dialog.
  2. Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
  3. On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
  4. For a game, open the launcher’s settings and note the installation location.
  5. In File Explorer, search likely application folders for the executable that was launched.
  6. If the program closes immediately, check Event Viewer:
  7. Press Win + X and select Event Viewer.
  8. Open Windows Logs > Application.
  9. Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
  10. Record the Faulting application name and Faulting module name.

Do not assume that the program named in the DLL error is Windows itself. The file normally belongs beside the application executable, where the program can load its matching dependencies.

Why the error happens

The most likely causes are:

  • An incomplete installation or uninstall.
  • Accidental deletion or movement of the DLL.
  • Disk cleanup removing an old application file.
  • Antivirus quarantine.
  • Damaged game files.
  • A failed launcher update.
  • An older SDK being mixed with a newer application.
  • A 32-bit program receiving an incompatible replacement DLL.
  • A second dependency required by the DLL being missing.

“The specified module could not be found” can mean that Windows cannot find stlport_vc745.dll, but it can also mean that the DLL is present and one of its dependencies is absent. Replacing only the named file will not solve the second case.

Fix 1: Repair the affected application

Repair is the safest first step because it restores the original file set and keeps the application’s DLLs together.

For a Microsoft Store or packaged app

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected application.
  4. Select its three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Start the application again.

If Repair does not work, return to the same screen and select Reset only if you understand that the application may lose local settings or stored data.

For a classic desktop program

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, if available.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart Windows and test the application.

If the repair wizard is unavailable or reports that source files are missing, use the original installer or uninstall and reinstall the application. Preserve saved games, templates, profiles, and license information before removing it.

For a game

Use the launcher’s file-repair function. The name varies by launcher, but it is commonly called Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After verification, launch the game from the same launcher. If the error remains, reinstall the game from its official store library or original media. The correct DLL should normally be restored to the game’s installation directory rather than to a Windows system directory.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Defender or another security product may have removed an old DLL.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Expand detections created around the time the application stopped working.
  5. Inspect the file path and detection details.
  6. Run a scan of the original installer and the application folder.

Restore or allow the file only when it came from a trusted original installer and you have verified that the application itself is legitimate. Do not restore a DLL downloaded from an unknown file repository.

If the security product repeatedly removes the file, do not simply disable protection. Obtain a current installer from the application’s publisher or official store and investigate the detection.

Fix 3: Reinstall the matching legacy program or SDK

Some older development environments used one STLport DLL name while other releases used a different STLport build. This is especially important with old OpenOffice.org applications and SDK tools.

Do not rename a similarly named DLL to stlport_vc745.dll. A renamed file may have different exports, dependencies, or compiler compatibility.

Instead:

  1. Remove the mismatched SDK or application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or through Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Install the matching application and SDK generation from the original media or the software publisher’s official archive.
  4. Launch the program using its original shortcut.
  5. Confirm that the DLL is restored beside the executable that needs it.

Archived legacy software may be unsupported and may contain security weaknesses. Use it only when the old application is required, keep it isolated where practical, and avoid opening untrusted files with it.

Fix 4: Check architecture and dependencies

stlport_vc745.dll is associated with old 32-bit software. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows generally uses the 32-bit loader context. Installing a 64-bit replacement is not a fix.

Check the application rather than moving DLLs between system folders:

  1. Right-click the application executable.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Use compatibility settings only when the application’s documentation or testing supports them.
  5. Keep the DLL in the application directory supplied by the installer.

If the file is present but the error continues, use a reputable offline PE or dependency inspection utility to identify missing dependencies. Do not download individual dependency files one at a time. Repairing or reinstalling the complete application is safer and more repeatable.

The current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable does not recreate this specific STLport DLL. Install a Microsoft Visual C++ package only when the application also reports a Microsoft runtime file such as msvcp70.dll, msvcr71.dll, or vcruntime140.dll, or when the application’s official documentation requires it.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components when Windows is also failing

System File Checker and DISM repair protected Windows components. They normally do not restore a third-party, application-local DLL, so use them when Windows has additional corruption symptoms rather than as the primary fix for this file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Try the affected application again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both commands complete successfully but the same application still reports the missing DLL, return to repairing or reinstalling the parent program.

Repeatedly hunting through Windows components and rerunning SFC or DISM can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what its repair process addresses; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when this DLL belongs to that program.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when the application has broader hardware errors

A graphics or device driver does not normally supply stlport_vc745.dll. Update drivers only when the application also reports graphics initialization failures, device errors, crashes, or a recent hardware change.

To check drivers manually:

  1. Press Win + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Network adapters.
  4. Right-click the relevant device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For graphics hardware, prefer the driver supplied by the computer or graphics-device manufacturer. Do not expect a driver update alone to recreate an application-local STLport file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finding the correct driver version across several devices can involve checking hardware IDs, manufacturer pages, and rollback history. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the affected devices; installation through the full version is optional, and it does not replace repairing the legacy application that owns this DLL.

What not to do

Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64

Windows normally searches the executable’s directory and other defined locations when loading a DLL. Copying an unrelated build into a system folder can create version conflicts, loading failures, or DLL hijacking risk.

On 64-bit Windows, do not move the file between C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64 as a generic solution. The folder names are tied to Windows loader behavior, not a simple “32-bit folder” and “64-bit folder” rule.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs. A normal C++ runtime DLL does not need registration. Running a command such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 stlport_vc745.dll

will usually produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not mean the DLL needs a different registration command.

Do not enable random Windows Features

There is no Windows Optional Feature that normally installs this STLport DLL. To review features, open Settings > System > Optional features, but do not enable unrelated legacy components merely because the error names a DLL.

FAQ

Is stlport_vc745.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is an old third-party, application-local STLport DLL. The program that installed it is responsible for restoring it.

Should I install the latest Visual C++ Redistributable?

Usually not for this particular error. The modern Microsoft redistributable does not provide this STLport file. Install a runtime only when another error or the application’s official documentation identifies that dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download the DLL by itself?

That is unsafe and often ineffective. An isolated download may have the wrong build, architecture, exports, or dependencies, and may be modified. Use the original application installer, launcher repair, or official publisher source.

Why is the file present but still reported as missing?

The application may be launching from a different directory, or a dependency of the DLL may be missing. Check the shortcut target and inspect the complete dependency set rather than replacing files randomly.

Will SFC repair it?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while this DLL belongs to a third-party application. Run SFC when Windows itself is also showing corruption symptoms.

What if every repair fails?

Record the exact error, executable name, installation path, Windows architecture, and file properties. Then obtain the matching installer or SDK package from the software publisher or the support community for that specific legacy product.
