Stranger Than Heaven is not a new Like a Dragon sequel in disguise. It is RGG Studio’s separate historical action-adventure, built around a 50-year story, five eras, five Japanese cities and newly designed real-time combat. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is the released mainline RPG: a contemporary Japan-and-Hawaii journey with Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu, turn-based Live Command battles and a deep collection of activities.
That shared developer gives both games cinematic drama, dense urban spaces and an interest in lives unfolding around crime, family and ambition. The structural difference is more important than the family resemblance: Stranger Than Heaven asks you to fight directly in historically shifting settings, while Infinite Wealth asks you to build a party, choose commands and manage turn-based positioning. Your choice therefore depends less on whether you like RGG Studio and more on which time period, combat rhythm and continuity you want.

SEGA announced the 2027 date and the five-era structure in 2026. Its announcement makes the historical scope central to the new game rather than a decorative flashback. Infinite Wealth’s release information comes from SEGA’s 2024 launch material and describes a complete, available RPG rather than an upcoming project.

A separate historical property
RGG Studio describes Stranger Than Heaven as a new historical action-adventure, and developer comments specifically explain why it is not being presented as a Like a Dragon entry. That distinction matters for expectations. You should not approach it as the next chapter of Ichiban’s job system, Kiryu’s personal history or the modern criminal underworld that frames the numbered games.

The game instead follows a 50-year story through five periods: 1915, 1929, 1943, 1951 and 1965. Those dates place the narrative in sharply different phases of modern Japanese history, so the world, social pressures and available technology can change between chapters. The story also moves through five Japanese cities. The announcements establish the number of cities and eras, but do not identify all five city names; treating the locations as interchangeable with the familiar modern maps would therefore be misleading.
Why the historical structure changes the experience
A contemporary open-city RPG can rely on recognizable phones, transport, entertainment districts and consumer culture. A story that jumps from 1915 to 1965 cannot use that same baseline. Each era can alter how characters communicate, what institutions look like and how a city’s streets function. The result should feel more like an anthology joined by a long historical arc than one uninterrupted present-day road trip.
The 50-year span also creates a different relationship with protagonists. Instead of asking only what a character will do next, the premise invites you to watch choices echo across decades. That is a thematic difference from Infinite Wealth, where the immediate journey of a known cast anchors the adventure.

Show-business elements without the same activity list
Official Stranger Than Heaven announcements highlight show-business elements alongside the historical story, cities and combat. They do not present the game as carrying over Infinite Wealth’s specific package of karaoke, Dondoko Island or Crazy Delivery. Until more systems are detailed, the safe conclusion is that entertainment and performance are part of this game’s identity, not that every familiar minigame returns unchanged.
What Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth delivers
A finished, contemporary party RPG
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth launched on January 26, 2024 for PlayStation, Xbox, Windows and Steam. It stars Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu and continues the established Like a Dragon/Yakuza continuity. That makes it the straightforward choice if you want a story whose emotional context comes from earlier games and whose central cast already has years of history.
The adventure connects contemporary Japan with Hawaii, including Yokohama and Hawaii as major parts of the journey. Its setting is not a historical reconstruction: the design, activities and conflicts belong to a modern world. You can therefore expect the series’ familiar contrast between serious personal drama and deliberately eccentric diversions to operate inside a present-day travel story.

Scale signaled by its launch and activities
SEGA reported that Infinite Wealth shipped and sold one million units in its first seven days. That is a publisher-reported commercial figure, not an independent sales estimate, but it explains why the game is already an established reference point while Stranger Than Heaven remains unreleased.

Combat: physical exchanges versus command-based tactics
Stranger Than Heaven’s real-time loop
Stranger Than Heaven is being built around newly designed physical action combat. The documented elements include blocking, grappling, stamina recovery and close-quarters exchanges. That points to a loop in which timing and positioning matter during the exchange itself: an attack can be met, a hold can be attempted and a defensive sequence can continue until the character has enough stamina to act effectively.
Xbox Wire’s hands-on report describes a knocked-down character fending off attacks while waiting for stamina to recover. That example is useful because it shows the intended pressure: being overwhelmed is not simply a prompt to select a healing item from a menu. You must survive the immediate exchange and manage the opening created when your stamina returns.
Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto gave the design rationale in a sentence reproduced by GamesRadar: “Frankly speaking, with Yakuza, you could even play it with closed eyes”. The point is not that every Like a Dragon battle is effortless; it is that the new project is deliberately pursuing a more demanding, tactile feel. Blocking and grappling are therefore best understood as core verbs, not cinematic flourishes.
Infinite Wealth’s Live Command RPG Battle system
Infinite Wealth uses the Live Command RPG Battle system. You select actions for a party rather than directly steering every punch, and the outcome depends on choosing suitable skills, targets and movement within the battle space. Positioning matters: where a character stands can affect who is reached, how attacks connect and whether the party can exploit an opening.

This format creates a different kind of pressure. A difficult encounter asks you to read resistances, preserve useful abilities, coordinate several characters and decide when to spend a powerful option. The drama comes from planning a sequence of commands and adapting as the enemy lineup changes, not from holding a guard button through a live combo.
What the two systems mean in practice
- Choose Stranger Than Heaven if you want immediate feedback from blocks, grabs, stamina and close-range timing.
- Choose Infinite Wealth if you prefer evaluating a party, selecting commands and turning positioning into a tactical advantage.
- Do not assume that enjoying one system automatically predicts enjoyment of the other. They ask for different attention: physical reactions in one, menu decisions and battlefield planning in the other.
Time, setting and narrative continuity
Five eras instead of one contemporary journey
The dates 1915, 1929, 1943, 1951 and 1965 give Stranger Than Heaven a built-in historical rhythm. The story can move from prewar Japan through wartime and postwar reconstruction to the rapidly changing 1960s. Because the game crosses five cities as well, travel is not simply a change of scenery; it is part of the premise’s attempt to show how people and places transform over time.
The historical framing also means that modern Like a Dragon assumptions may not apply. Familiar institutions, slang, transportation and leisure activities cannot be treated as permanent fixtures across all five periods. The game’s identity comes from that instability.

Infinite Wealth keeps its story in the contemporary world and uses the contrast between Japan and Hawaii to vary the adventure. Yokohama provides continuity with the modern Japanese side of the series, while Hawaii expands the cast’s geographic and cultural surroundings. The result is a travel narrative whose locations are separated by distance but connected by the same current-era cast and RPG systems.
Separate identity versus inherited continuity
Developer explanations frame Stranger Than Heaven as separate from the Like a Dragon line. You do not need to treat it as a numbered sequel, and there is no reason to expect Ichiban or Kiryu to serve as its narrative anchor. Infinite Wealth, by contrast, is explicitly part of the existing continuity and places Ichiban and Kiryu at the center of its appeal.

For the upcoming game, official announcements emphasize the historical narrative, the five cities, physical combat and show-business elements. They do not confirm that the complete Infinite Wealth activity list will return. The responsible comparison is therefore about emphasis: Infinite Wealth has a published, named suite of minigames and side modes, while Stranger Than Heaven has announced pillars but not an equivalent catalog.

Stranger Than Heaven is a future purchase
SEGA and the Like a Dragon Web Portal list January 15, 2027 as the release date. The planned platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam, with Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Game Pass also listed. Because the launch is in the future, any decision made now is necessarily based on the announced concept and systems rather than a finished game you can play.
That timing favors readers who enjoy following a new project, are comfortable waiting and want to see RGG Studio attempt a historical setting with a different combat foundation. It also means that details not in the announcement—such as the full protagonist roster, all city names, final activity list and long-term performance—should not be treated as settled.
Infinite Wealth is available now
Infinite Wealth launched January 26, 2024 on PlayStation, Xbox, Windows and Steam. You can therefore evaluate it as a complete release with a known cast, published battle system and documented optional content. If your priority is playing immediately rather than choosing a future release, this is the only one of the two that meets that requirement.

Next, decide whether continuity matters. Readers invested in Ichiban, Kiryu and the existing setting will find that context only in Infinite Wealth. Readers who would rather enter a self-contained historical premise should wait for Stranger Than Heaven without treating the absence of familiar faces as a drawback.
Finally, weigh certainty against novelty. Infinite Wealth offers a finished, documented package today. Stranger Than Heaven offers the greater conceptual change—five eras, five cities and a new action system—but the announced information is not a substitute for a playable release.
